Gautam Gambhir’s prediction about Marcus Stoinis for the ongoing IPL 2020 final has backfired and the fans are brutally trolling the former India opener on Twitter. Before the start of the game between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, Gautam Gambhir had picked Stoinis as captain of his fantasy XI.

Speaking to cricket.com, the former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper had said that Stoinis has started opening the batting and he bowls as well. He had also said that if Delhi Capitals go with the same playing XI, Stoinis would play the role of the third seamer.

“He has now started opening the batting and he bowls as well and if Delhi goes with the same playing eleven, then he is their third seamer. He will be bowling three or four overs as well and what’s better than having someone who can bowl three or four overs and can open the batting,” said Gautam Gambhir.

“Not many allrounders have done that apart from Ben Stokes and the moment Ben Stokes got it into form, I picked him as captain as well. That’s the reason I have gone with someone like Marcus Stoinis,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir’s comments came Stoinis’ fine performance in the last two games – Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2. In Qualifier 1,  he had played a fighting knock against Mumbai although Delhi had lost the game. The Australian allrounder had scored 65 off 46 balls in addition to picking up a wicket.

In Qualifier 2 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he opened the batting and scored 38 runs before taking  3 wickets as Delhi won the game by 17 runs. Stoinis was adjudged player of the match for his performance.

But on Tuesday, the Delhi star failed to deliver and was out for a first ball duck after Shreyas Iyer won the toss and decided to bat first. On the very first ball of the final, he edged a Trent Boult delivery behind the stumps. And as soon as the wicket fell, the fans took to Twitter to troll Gautam Gambhir.
