Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Arun Dhumal opened up about another successful season of the league. He made a bold statement saying that there’s no one close to the Indian League and they don’t see anyone else as their competition.

The 16th edition of the IPL was another blockbuster edition that saw a staggering competition between bat and ball. Many young players showcased their skills on a big stage along with many veterans who made a comeback. In the end, it was MS Dhoni’s men who went on to clinch the title by beating Gujarat Titans in the final.

Apart from the staggering cricket on the field, it was another profitable edition for the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI). The tournament since its inception in 2008 has revolutionized Indian cricket and given huge monetary success to governing body with its stratospheric growth, developing into one of the world’s most lucrative annual sporting properties, pulling in millions of viewers each season.

The brand value of IPL over the years has increased rapidly and the estimated brand value of the league currently is $8.4 billion. The rapid growth of the league has sort of put it on the same page as NBA, NFL, and NHL.

However, in the last few years, the T20 leagues have taken a toll across the globe and there might be a potential threat to IPL, considering the amount of money being spent in the other leagues as well. But Arun Dhumal feels there’s no competition of the IPL. Speaking to Reuters, he said.

“We don’t see anyone else as our competition, there is none even close to IPL. Our best wishes to all the boards starting their own T20 leagues, but I don’t think any of them can be a threat to IPL.”

More than 120 million viewers tuned into the Jio Cinema to watch the IPL Final. The overall numbers in the league were staggering as well. Arun Dhumal called it a phenomenal success and said that numbers are only going to get better. He elaborated:

“It has been a phenomenal success, and largely because of the sheer competitiveness of this year’s tournament. Most of the matches went down to the wire and there were plenty of last-over thrillers. We got a phenomenal response from the fans.

“Our viewership grew manifold and our broadcast and digital partners both are excited. Even the in-stadia experience of the fans has been phenomenal, and going forward it’s only going to get better.”

IPL 2023: “We will have to consult the franchises,” Arun Dhumal on increasing the $11.5 million salary cap for each franchise

Arun Dhumal also talked about increasing the $11.5 million salary cap for each franchise. He said that there have been no discussions about it so far but they need to consult the franchises as well. He said:

“We will have to consult the franchises and team owners before taking a call. While we still have 10 months before the next IPL, a lot of discussions will have to take place before anything like that happens.”

Arun Dhumal confirmed that IPL will be a 10-team competition but they may increase the number of matches from 74 to 94 if ICC provides a bigger window.
