Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer, cites Shubman Gill’s outstanding batting display as one of the main causes of the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) remarkable achievement in the 16th Indian Premier League (IPL 2023).

Gill won the Orange Cap after scoring 890 runs in 17 innings at an exceptional average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. He came within 83 runs of breaking Virat Kohli’s record 973-run total from the 2016 season of the elite tournament.

The 23-year-old posted an average of 59.33 during the season while scoring three hundred and four fifty-sixes. In the final two league games of the IPL 2023, Kohli got back-to-back hundreds and enjoyed a successful run.

It’s interesting to note that Kohli and Gill both made hundreds in the final IPL league match of this season. In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Chopra explored the causes of the Titans’ steady performance in IPL 2023.

Aakash Chopra mentioned this with regard to Gill: “Gill is absolutely thrilling. The last season was good but this was a wow season. He used to be called prince earlier, but he is no longer a prince, this was a proper king-type season. The domination we saw from Virat Kohli in 2016, this was that kind of a season.”

“He just kept growing. In fact, that innings against Mumbai, it was like a man possessed, that he cannot do anything wrong now. He was telling people where to bowl. The Narendra Modi Stadium is a huge stadium and the guy hit sixes there,” Aakash Chopra elaborated.

Aakash Chopra questions KKR’s decision to release Shubman Gill:

In that knockout game, Gill hammered 129 runs off 60 balls with seven fours and ten sixes. His innings helped GT set a massive 234-run mark for MI, who fell by 62 runs as Gujarat advanced to the final. Aakash Chopra also questioned the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) decision to release Shubman Gill before the IPL 2022 auction.

“Kolkata let him go. In the options they had there, they retained Venkatesh Iyer. Nothing against Venkatesh Iyer, but it is very important at which stage you pick a player and when you leave him. Both things define how your future and present will be. You don’t get a player like him and you let him go, “ Aakash Chopra said.

The Titans paid Rs. 8 crore for Gill as part of their selection picks for the IPL 2022 auction. The decision paid off handsomely, as the elegant opener has shone for the franchise in the last two IPL seasons.
