The recent spat between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli during IPL 2023 has garnered a lot of attention within the cricket community. Former Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has also weighed in on the issue with his thoughts on the matter.

Last month, during a match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Bharat Ratna Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, Gambhir and Kohli had a heated exchange of words. Kohli first clashed with LSG’s Naveen-ul-Haq, and then the team’s mentor Gambhir joined in.

Ahmed Shehzad, in his recent appearance on the Nadir Ali podcast, expressed his disappointment with Gautam Gambhir’s actions on the field, labelling it as a gesture of jealousy. Shehzad’s comments suggest that he believes Gambhir intentionally did something to bring down someone else’s achievements because he was jealous.

“As a viewer, as a sportsman, this hurt my feelings a lot. It seemed like Gautam Gambhir was trying to do something out of jealousy. It looked like he was waiting for something to happen so that he can create a controversy with Virat,” Ahmed Shehzad said.

“It was really sad to see such an episode” – Ahmed Shehzad

In this episode, former Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad defended Royal Challengers Bangalore star Virat Kohli, saying that such things can happen on the pitch in the heat of the moment.

Ahmed Shehzad’s point of view that anything can happen on the field in the heat of the moment is widely held in sports, and it is true that athletes can sometimes let their emotions get the best of them. However, it is crucial to remember that regardless of the circumstances, players must keep their professionalism and respect for their opponents.

“It was really sad to see such an episode. I can understand that Kohli had a fight with the player from Afghanistan (Naveen-ul-Haq) because such things happen in the heat of the moment. But I did not understand why Gautam Gambhir showed such gestures towards the biggest player of his own country, Kohli,” Ahmed Shehzad concluded.

In the wake of the incident in Lucknow, Kohli, Gambhir, and Naveen-ul-Haq received hefty fines. Even Gambhir said in a post-IPL interview that their conflict only took place on the playing surface and not off it.
