On Tuesday, January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the release of an Invitation to Tender for the right to own and operate a Women’s Indian Premier League (Women’s IPL) franchise.

The long-awaited Women’s IPL is all set to commence this year and the marquee tournament is set to have 5 teams. The official dates for the tournament have not been announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

However, reports claim that the Women’s IPL will begin following the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to conclude on February 26, and before the commencement of the Men’s IPL 2023, which will reportedly begin on April 1. As per reports, the Women’s IPL is likely to be played from March 3 to 26 in India.

A total of 22 games are expected to be played in the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL. 20 games will be played in the group stage as each team will play the other twice and the table-toppers will qualify directly for the final. Also, the second and third-placed teams will play an Eliminator to decide the second finalist.

BCCI Invites Bids For Women’s IPL Franchises

On Tuesday, January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement in which it was mentioned that the entities will have to make a payment of INR 5 lakh, which will be non-refundable, by January 21 to access the Invitation to Tender (ITT).

Also, it was mentioned in the official statement that both Indian and foreign entities are allowed to purchase the ITT. Notably, several IPL Men’s Team owners have shown interest in acquiring women’s teams.

“The Governing Council of the IPL invites bids from reputed entities to acquire the right to own and operate a team in the Women’s Indian Premier League, through a tender process.

“The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process including eligibility requirements, process for submissions of bids, proposed team’s rights and obligations, etc. are contained in the ‘Invitation to Tender’ (“ITT”) which will be made available on receipt of payment of a non-refundable fee of INR 5,00,000 (Rupees Five Lakhs Only) plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. The procedure to procure the ITT documents is enlisted in Annexure A to this document. The ITT will be available for purchase till January 21, 2023,” the BCCI said in an official media release.

“Interested parties are requested to email the details of payment made for the purchase of the ITT to wipl.teams@bcci.tv , as per the procedure laid down in Annexure A. It is clarified that the ITT documents shall be shared only upon receipt of payment of the non-refundable fee as above.

“Any interested party wishing to submit a bid is required to purchase the ITT. However, only those satisfying the eligibility criteria set out in the ITT and subject to the other terms and conditions set out therein, shall be eligible to bid. It is clarified that merely purchasing this ITT does not entitle any person to bid,” the BCCI said in an official statement.
