On Thursday, January 5, TOI reported that among the current 10 Men’s IPL franchises, 5 are “very keen” to own and operate a team in the Women’s IPL (WIPL).
On Tuesday, January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the release of an Invitation to Tender for the right to own and operate a Women’s IPL (WIPL) franchise.

The long-awaited Women’s IPL is all set to begin this year and the tournament is set to have 5 teams. The official dates for the tournament have not been announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, reports claim that the Women’s IPL is likely to be played from March 3 to March 26 in India.
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are the franchises interested in owning a team in the Women’s IPL.

“We are picking the bid document,” confirmed Rajasthan Royals chairman Ranjit Barthakur, reported TOI.
If CSK doesn’t have a Women’s IPL team, it may not look good – CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan
“We’ve applied to buy the bid document. Now we’ll have to find out about the economics of it. We are interested. If CSK doesn’t have a women’s team, it may not look good. We’d like to promote women’s cricket,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying by TOI.
Meanwhile, a source has said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not setting a base price for acquiring a Women’s IPL team is a “wise decision”.
“It seems BCCI has not kept a base price to buy a team in WIPL, which is a wise decision. If you keep a very high base price, you will scare off potential investors,” a source told TOI.
“I think everyone is smart enough not to want to lose money. They may not mind some loss, but not heavy losses. If the base price is, say Rs 400 crores, teams would lose Rs 50-80 crores per year, and I can’t imagine anyone having the appetite for that,” said a source.
The inaugural edition of the WIPL might be entirely played in Mumbai, which has three world-class venues — Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne Stadium — however, nothing is confirmed as of yet.
