The IPL 2024 player auction will be held in Dubai on December 19. The deadline for player auction has been set for November 26 as per reports in ESPNCricinfo.

Player retention has already started with different franchises trading and keeping different players. West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd has been one of the recent trades from LSG to Mumbai Indians.

Earlier this year, Chennai Super Kings under the captaincy of MS Dhoni won the IPL title for the fifth time. Chennai won the final on the DLS method after Gujarat Titans posted 214/4 batting first.

With the trade window open, almost all the franchises are expected to be interested in trading and getting the players that they want ahead of the next season. The total number of players going into the auction is yet not known but the number is expected to be big.

It will be interesting to see how many players are released by the 10 franchises as they will need a big purse to buy back players. The last mega auction was in IPL 2022 when the two new franchises were added and the squads were revamped.

Meanwhile, all the CSK fans will be seeing MS Dhoni playing probably for one last time in his IPL career. After leading CSK to their fifth title win, Dhoni spoke about playing for at least one more season. He had a knee operation after the IPL final and has had enough time to recover.

On Thursday, at an event in Bengaluru, Dhoni provided his fans with the million-dollar update on whether he will be returning for IPL 2024.

“Knee has survived the operation, going through the rehab patch, the doctor told me you would feel much better by November. But no problem in day-to-day routine,” said the 42-year-old.

“Circumstantially if you see, this is the best time to announce my retirement. But the amount of love and affection I have been shown wherever I have been this year, the easy thing would be for me to say “Thank you very much”, but the tough thing for me is to work hard for another 9 months and come back and play at least 1 more season of IPL. A lot depends on the body, I have 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side, it’s not easy for me but that’s a gift. The way they’ve shown their love and affection, I think that’s something I need to do for them,” he had said after IPL 2023 final.

Saudi Arabia is keen on buying a stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to reports. Started in 2008, the IPL is the biggest and the richest franchise T20 competition in the world and also ranks among the leading sports tournaments.

Leading cricketers from around the world participate in the competition every year right from the first-ever season of the Indian Premier League. A couple of years ago, the BCCI also added two new teams to the competition to take the total number of teams to ten.

With IPL continuing its meteoric rise, Saudi Arabia is interested in associating itself with the competition. According to a report in Bloomberg, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s advisers have discussed the possibility of moving the Indian Premier League into a holding company, valued at as much as $30 billion. If this passes through, Saudi Arabia could take a significant, multibillion-dollar stake. The report stated that the talks were held when the Saudi Prince visited India in September.

The report further stated that Saudi Arabia proposed investing as much as $5 billion in IPL and helping the expansion of the league into other countries as well. The news outlet also stated that the Indian government and the BCCI are likely to take a call on the matter after the general elections next summer.

Saudi Arabia is already associated with the Indian Premier League as the sponsor. Its leading petroleum and natural gas company Aramco as well as the Saudi Tourism Authority are the sponsors of the league. The T20 competition has established itself as one of the most lucrative competitions in the world.

In recent times, the BCCI has signed several lucrative deals. Last year, the BCCI sold the telecasting rights of the IPL for a staggering amount of $6.2 billion, which comes to $15.1 million per match, which is more than the English Premier League and just behind the US’ National Football League.

Mumbai Indians, on Friday (November 3), secured the services of West Indian allrounder Romario Shepherd through a trade with Lucknow Super Giants.

In the last auction for this year’s IPL, the Lucknow-based outfit had signed up Romario Shepherd at his base price of Rs 50 lakh. However, he played just one game for Lucknow Super Giants and failed to make any big impression. The 28-year-old began his career in IPL 2022 with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In his maiden IPL season, he played three games and scored 58 runs in addition to picking up 3 wickets before being released by the Hyderabad-based outfit. Romario Shepherd is a medium fast-bowler who is known for his variations and is also a hard-hitting batsman.

He has played 31 T20Is so far and has scored 304 runs and picked up 31 wickets. Earlier this year, he impressed in the home series against India. The right-arm pacer picked up 9 wickets in 5 games including a four-wicket haul in the series-decider to help his side clinch a famous series win.

Overall in T20s, he has picked up 109 wickets and has scored almost 1000 runs in 99 games. He has an average of 23 in bowling and a strike rate of 150 with the bat in the shortest format of the game. Romario Shepherd is the kind of player that every team wants in T20s and Mumbai Indians will be hoping that he delivers for them in IPL 2024.

Patel praised Suryakumar Yadav’s ability to sweep the ball from almost outside the pitch on off-stump. The right-arm pacer said that Surya can take the ball off his body, which is something many players are not comfortable with.

“Surya will sweep you from almost outside the pitch on off stump. Another ability he has is to take the ball on his body all the time. It’s one thing to take the ball on your body and play in front of square but if you are trying to play behind square and if it comes out a little slower or a little faster, it’s going to hit you. Sairaj Bahutule praised the Indian batsmen for rising to the challenge and the bowlers for delivering as a unit on a good Test match wicket. He pointed out that all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, who batted in the lower order, both scored fifty on a pitch where none of Australia’s batters scored a half-century.

“I thought it was a proper Test match wicket. Now, this is India and obviously, you know, we will play to our advantage. Having said that, it was not an unplayable surface as such. Rohit (Sharma) got a hundred on the same pitch. And as you know, the No 7 (Jadeja) hit a 70 and No 9 (Axar) scored 84, which shows that if one could apply, there was a chance to get runs. Having said that, we have an attack that can do well on any surface,” Bahutule said.

Former Indian cricketer Sairaj Bahutule is the spin bowling coach of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) National Cricket Academy (NCA). The Mumbai leg spinner was drafted in by the Indian team management to help the Indian spinners during the Test series.

Sairaj Bahutule said that he was happy with the way the team played as a unit to beat Australia and that the spinners used their experience effectively.

Madagamagamage Dasun Shanaka had a base of INR 50 lakh for the mini-auction. He was among the 405 cricketers shortlisted for the auction on December 23 in Kochi.

All-rounders were in heavy demand at the IPL mini-auction, with the likes of Sam Curran, Cameron Green, and Ben Stokes getting lucrative deals. However, Shanaka went unsold as no franchise showed interest in him.

“When it comes to India, the pitches are batting-friendly. So, I enjoy those conditions very much. It’s (aggressive batting) in my game, my instinctive reactions come to play there. I don’t mind that I didn’t get picked in the IPL. I’m sure there will be something for me in India in the future. So I’m looking forward for that opportunity to play in the IPL,” Shanaka said.

The BCCI has also highlighted that it is “not obliged to accept the highest monetary offer” and will look for ways for the bidders to work towards enriching the development of women’s cricket in India.

BCCI Shortlists 10 Cities For Women’s IPL, Single Bidder Can Contest For More Than One City – Reports

As per the same ESPNcricinfo report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clearly mentioned in the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document that a single bidder can compete for more than one city. Also, the board has shortlisted a total of 10 cities and listed the venues, including their respective capacities, in the tender.

The cities shortlisted by the board are; Ahmedabad (Narendra Modi stadium, capacity 112,560), Kolkata (Eden Gardens, 65,000), Chennai (MA Chidambaram stadium, 50,000), Bangalore (M Chinnaswamy stadium, 42,000), Delhi (Arun Jaitley stadium, 55,000), Dharamsala (HPCA stadium, 20,900), Guwahati (Barsapara Stadium, 38,650), Indore (Holkar stadium, 26,900), Lucknow (AB Vajpayee Ekana cricket stadium, 48,800) and Mumbai (Wankhede / DY Patil / Brabourne Stadiums). Notably, only one of three grounds will be utilised based on “availability and other factors” for Mumbai.

The plan of having a 10-city pool is quite different from the original plan of the board. Earlier, the board had planned to either pick one city from each of the six zones across the country or hold the tournament in a half-a-dozen cities without proper home bases for the five franchises.

The bidders have been asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to quote a price for a franchise for 10 editions as no official base price has been set by the board. Also, the bidders are allowed to contest for more than one city, but the successful bidder will only get one franchise.

“The stadium with the highest bid amount will be awarded first. Thereafter, the stadium with the next highest bid amount will be awarded,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India said.

There will be re-bidding if two of the highest bids for a single venue are equal. If the highest bids for two venues from two different bidders are the same, the BCCI will have the “discretion to decide the order.” Also, if a bidder makes top bids for more than one city, the board will decide on the venue.

BCCI Calls For Both Capped And Uncapped Players To Register For Women’s IPL 2023 Auction

In the guidelines documents, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) called for both capped and uncapped players to register online for the Women’s IPL 2023 auction to enter Player Auction Register.

As per the current protocols in the Men’s IPL, the Board will shortlist the players from the ‘Auction Register’ in recommendation with the five yet-to-be-established franchises to form an ‘Auction List’. Notably, the players who enter the ‘Registered Available Player Pool’ are only allowed to get picked as replacement players after going unsold at the auction.

Meanwhile, three ‘reverse price’ categories have been set by the board for the capped players – INR 50 lakh, INR 40 lakh, and INR 30 lakh – which will be the starting point for bidding. Also, two categories have been set for the uncapped players – INR 20 lakh and INR 10 lakh.

Talking further about the Women’s IPL, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already announced the release of an Invitation to Tender for the right to own and operate a Women’s IPL (WIPL) franchise. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jake Lush McCrum has revealed that they have already got the tender documents.

Meanwhile, a source has said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not setting a base price for acquiring a Women’s IPL team is a “wise decision”.

“It seems BCCI has not kept a base price to buy a team in WIPL, which is a wise decision. If you keep a very high base price, you will scare off potential investors,” a source told TOI.

“I think everyone is smart enough not to want to lose money. They may not mind some loss, but not heavy losses. If the base price is, say Rs 400 crores, teams would lose Rs 50-80 crores per year, and I can’t imagine anyone having the appetite for that,” said a source.

The inaugural edition of the WIPL might be entirely played in Mumbai, which has three world-class venues — Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne Stadium — however, nothing is confirmed as of yet.

BCCI Invites Bids For Women’s IPL Franchises

On Tuesday, January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement in which it was mentioned that the entities will have to make a payment of INR 5 lakh, which will be non-refundable, by January 21 to access the Invitation to Tender (ITT).

Also, it was mentioned in the official statement that both Indian and foreign entities are allowed to purchase the ITT. Notably, several IPL Men’s Team owners have shown interest in acquiring women’s teams.

“The Governing Council of the IPL invites bids from reputed entities to acquire the right to own and operate a team in the Women’s Indian Premier League, through a tender process.

“The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process including eligibility requirements, process for submissions of bids, proposed team’s rights and obligations, etc. are contained in the ‘Invitation to Tender’ (“ITT”) which will be made available on receipt of payment of a non-refundable fee of INR 5,00,000 (Rupees Five Lakhs Only) plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. The procedure to procure the ITT documents is enlisted in Annexure A to this document. The ITT will be available for purchase till January 21, 2023,” the BCCI said in an official media release.

“Interested parties are requested to email the details of payment made for the purchase of the ITT to wipl.teams@bcci.tv , as per the procedure laid down in Annexure A. It is clarified that the ITT documents shall be shared only upon receipt of payment of the non-refundable fee as above.

“Any interested party wishing to submit a bid is required to purchase the ITT. However, only those satisfying the eligibility criteria set out in the ITT and subject to the other terms and conditions set out therein, shall be eligible to bid. It is clarified that merely purchasing this ITT does not entitle any person to bid,” the BCCI said in an official statement.

Naveen-ul-Haq further said that the experience of playing in the IPL would definitely help him to grow in his career.

Certainly playing in different franchise leagues will help me to absorb the pressure of IPL but saying that it is the biggest league in the world and the experience that I will gather playing there will certainly help me in the future.”

Talking about Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), they released 7 players ahead of the mini-auction. They entered the mini-auction with a purse of INR 23.35 crore. Lucknow Super (LSG) had 15 players in the squad, of which 4 were overseas. They had a maximum of 10 slots available, including 4 for the players from overseas.

“Mayank has been the captain for Punjab and he was let go. I am really happy that he went to a team like Sunrisers,” Anil Kumble said on JioCinema. 

“I think a new environment will certainly help Mayank and he is wonderful to have around the team,” Kumble explained. 

“I don’t know how much Murali will be able to help Mayank with his batting, but Brian Lara is there,” joked Kumble.

Mayank Agarwal was the first player retained by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction and he was appointed as the skipper of the side. However, after a poor season, Mayank was released by the franchise. Notably, the former Punjab Kings captain Mayank Agarwal became the most expensive Indian player at the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

“I was partially nervous and excited, but I am glad to be part of SRH and really looking forward to working with Muralitharan and Lara, players with lot of international experience and success,” said Mayank Agarwal on JioCinema after being roped in by SRH.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan was absolutely delighted to have England red-ball captain Ben Stokes in the squad and he labelled the duo of MS Dhoni and Ben Stokes as a “great combination”.

Ben Stokes was acquired by the Chennai-based franchise for a whopping INR 16.25 crore and he equalled Chris Morris’ fee from the IPL 2021 auction and became the joint-third most-expensive player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history.

In a video shared on the official Twitter handle of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Viswanathan said that having a two-time World Cup-winning captain – Dhoni – and a two-time World Cup-winning player – Stokes – is a great thing for the side.

“Getting an all-rounder the calibre of Ben Stokes was really a very good one for the team. He has the experience of winning two World Cups for England. Another World Cup-winning captain, our ‘Thalaivan’ is, I think it will be a great combination for CSK,” said team CEO Kasi Viswanathan in a video shared by CSK on Twitter.

The CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan further said that they have got a good mix of all-rounders in the team.

“Other three all-rounders went for a big price, we knew we had a chance. And I think we grabbed that chance and we are lucky to have it. We have a very good mix of all-rounders in the sense we have a Ben Stokes. We have a Jadeja, we have a Moeen Ali. We have a Jamieson. So, I think it’s a good blend

“As far as bowling is concerned, we have a good crop of Indian seamers also, and it should give captain ‘Thalaivan’ a great chance to come back and do well this season,” he added.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) released as many as 8 players ahead of the mini-auction. They entered the mini-auction with a total of INR 13.2 crore in their pocket. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had 18 players in the squad, 6 of which were overseas, and they had 7 open slots, of which 2 were for overseas players. Overall, CSK bought Ben Stokes, Kyle Jamieson, Ajinkya Rahane, Nishant Sindhu, Shaik Rasheed, Ajay Mandal and Bhagath Varma at the mini-auction.

Speaking at a media interaction in Kochi, Ashish Nehra showered praise on Williamson, saying that he is a proven performer and brings a lot to the table.

“Somebody like Williamson will bring in so much experience. He is a proven player, didn’t have a couple of good IPL seasons but IPL is so fast-paced that it takes very little time for thinking and perception to change. For us, if he would have gone for much more, we would have still gone for Kane Williamson.

“We believe in that player and wanted to have that mix of experience and youth. Kane brings a lot to the table for any team. We are privileged that we could have him, and on top of that at base price,” Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra said at a media interaction in Kochi as quoted by News18.

The Gujarat Titans head coach added that Kane Williamson will likely bat at No.3 in the playing XI in next year’s tournament.

“We are talking about somebody like Sai Sudarshan who is young and has time. And the presence of Kane Williamson will only help him. Even last year, it wasn’t that Sai Sudarshan played all games. Just imagine how much Sai would gain with the presence of Kane Williamson around him. Har player ka time aata hai… there are other young players but again there is no option but to wait for your chance,” said Nehra as quoted by News18.

If Kane Williamson would be there, he will bat at No.3 and Hardik will bat at No.4 – Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra was further asked whether Hardik Pandya will play the role of finisher, unlike last year, in the presence of Williamson in the team. He responded:

“Hardik Pandya last year also batted at No.4. I think only once he batted at No.3. If Kane Williamson would be there, he will bat at No.3 and Hardik will bat at No.4. But again these calls would be better closer to the season. And, it’s not that people who bat higher up the order can’t finish games. Even an opener can be your finisher if he bats right till the end.”

He further said that the acquisition of Kane Williamson at INR 2 crore helped them bring in Shivam Mavi (INR 6 crore) and Joshua Little (INR 4.4 crore) at the mini-auction.

“The price at which we got Kane allowed us to pick both (Mavi and Little) the seamers. It’s a short auction and when you talk about supply and demand, Shivam Mavi was right up there as top three bowlers. Another was Mukesh Kumar who too has gone for good money. Mavi is a good athlete and is a youngster and from where we are right now, we will give him a good opportunity and help him. And if does well, it will be good for Indian cricket also. We are looking forward to working with both Joshua Little and Shivam Mavi,” said Nehra.

Speaking to Star Sports, Sam Curran said that he is “incredibly excited” to travel to India for next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sam Curran was bought by PBKS for INR 7.2 crore in 2019 but was released after just one season, which allowed Chennai Super Kings to pick him ahead of the IPL 2020 for INR 5.50 crore.

Sam Curran further revealed that he was watching the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction with his girlfriend and her dad. The all-rounder also said that he was happy to see his last franchise, CSK, bid for him.

“So many things running through my mind. At 9am this morning I was struggling to find a stream, it [the auction] wasn’t on TV in England. I sat with my girlfriend and her dad to watch it. I actually turned my phone off because I thought I was behind and didn’t want to see any messages saying congrats. I saw the bids coming from Mumbai, then Chennai, having played for Chennai earlier it was cool to see them [bidding],” he said.

Curran broke Chris Morris’ record (INR 16.25) crore to become the most expensive buy at an IPL auction. Also, he has become the most expensive player in the history of the IPL, overtaking even the retained players – Virat Kohli and KL Rahul (INR 17 crore).

The 36-year-old Pakistani-born Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza has said that he is “really happy, humble and excited” to finally get an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract.

Raza, who was one of the most experienced players to go under the auction hammer in Kochi, has delivered highly impactful performances both with bat and ball in recent times. In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, he smashed 219 runs in eight games at a strike rate of almost 148, and with the ball, he bagged 10 wickets.

Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza said that he always wanted to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) before retiring from cricket.

Sikandar Raza, who is currently in Kathmandu, further revealed that he didn’t watch his bid live because his internet connection dropped.

“I was in training today. I was calm. Sometimes I was nervous. I went through all the emotions before the auction.

“We went back to the hotel. Then there was an anti-corruption meeting [while the auction was on]. When it was my turn at the IPL auction, I was moving from one room to another, and the internet got disconnected.

“While it was connecting back again, I started getting a lot of messages from my friends, congratulating me. I said, ‘what, I can’t see it. Are you guys playing a prank?’ They said check the auction. I said I am checking but I haven’t even been up there.

“What happened was, by the time I reconnected, I had gone already. So basically I didn’t see the bid. Maybe that was a good thing actually. I reckon it’s a good thing. If I was watching, I would have shouted in the meeting!” Sikandar Raza told ESPNcricinfo.

To sum it up, I would say that making my parents proud has been the highlight.

“The top three would be the hundred against India, and beating Ireland and Pakistan in the T20 World Cup,” Raza said.

Sikandar Raza further talked about how a video call with new coaching director Dave Houghton has turned out to be a major turning point in his career. He elaborated:

“Without going into too many details, I wasn’t enjoying my cricket. My first meeting with Dave Houghton was via a WhatsApp video call. I was in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. That one meeting changed a lot of things for me. I was expecting a firm order that ‘I want you back on this day.’

“But all he said was, ‘Son, you are playing cricket. Make sure you win the trophy. Enjoy it. I will see you when you come back’. That’s all he said to me, and it changed a lot of things in my mind. It was a turning point. Dave Houghton has played a huge role.”

“I used to see other cricketers go from one league to another, and on to another. Allah has given me this opportunity, so I will not complain about anything – the wicket, weather or changing environment, culture and changing room. I will just be grateful, which makes everything else easier.”

I Have Lost Words – Harry Brook

After being sold for a whopping INR 13.25 crore, Brook revealed that he was having dinner with his mother and grandmother when he was sold to SRH.

“I have lost words, was having dinner with my mother and grandmother, they were crying when SRH picked me up. Thank you so much SRH,” Brook stated.

The youngster recently won the Player of the Series award in the three-match Test series against Babar Azam & Co. in Pakistan. He emerged as the leading run-scorer in the Test series, scoring 468 runs at an average of 93.60, including three centuries and one half-century.

Also, Harry Brook became the first millionaire of the IPL 2023 auction and overall the most expensive specialist batter ever sold at a mini-auction, surpassing Shimron Hetmyer who was sold for INR 7.75.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction is currently underway in Kochi. England’s Harry Brook entered the IPL auction with a base price of INR 1.5 crore. Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were involved in a bidding war to acquire the services of the Englishman and in the end, SRH bagged him for INR 13.25 crore.

Harry Brook became the first millionaire of the IPL 2023 auction and overall the most expensive specialist batter ever sold at a mini-auction, surpassing Shimron Hetmyer who was sold for INR 7.75.

During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Wasim Jaffer said that playing in the IPL under a huge price tag, that too for the first time, will be very challenging for the youngster. He elaborated:

“I am actually surprised. I thought they’ll hold their purse back for Stokes and Curran because that’s what they need, most teams need actually. But for somebody who is very unknown to Indian conditions, IPL brings a different pressure. Playing for the first time under such a huge price tag is going to be a challenge.

“We’ve seen a lot of big players have failed to do that. He’s had a good PSL, he’s had a good time in Pakistan, different batting conditions, absolutely brilliant batting conditions. It’s totally different when you play in India. So I am really surprised. Being a Punjab Kings guy I am happy their lot of purse has gone there.”

The only concern I would have with Harry Brook is that he’s a one-dimensional player – Tom Moody

During the same discussion, Tom Moody said that Brook is a high-quality player, but he brings just one skillset to the table unlike Nicholas Pooran, who was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the mini-auction. He elaborated:

“He has proved enough in his short international career. He is a high-quality player, a young player. He is a player that is a long-term franchise player. The only concern I would have with Harry Brook is that he’s a one-dimensional player and paying such a high price to a player that only brings one skillet. Let’s compare him with someone like Nicholas Pooran whom Sunrisers released back in the auction and paid just over 10 crores. 

“He is a two-skilled player, he is a power-packed player middle-order player, he is a left-hander, which is an important commodity to have in the middle-order to combat spin strikes at 150 but he keeps wicket. Harry Brook what does he do, he bats and bats at a good high strike rate, but that’s all he does. That’s my only concern.”

Gujarat Titans (GT) entered the mini-auction with a healthy purse of INR 19.25 crore to spend on a maximum of 7 players, including 3 overseas. They made two big acquisitions at the start of the auction as they managed to get Kane Williamson and Odean Smith at their base price.

The third big acquisition of Gujarat Titans (GT) was the wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat, who plays for Andhra Cricket Team in domestic cricket. In February 2015, KS Bharat became the first wicketkeeper-batter to score a triple ton in the Ranji Trophy and the same year he was roped in by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for INR 10 lakh, however, he didn’t get an opportunity to play.

He was then released by RCB and was picked by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 2 crore, at 10 times his base price, at the IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru. However, KS Bharat played just 2 games in 2022 and scored 8 runs.

Meanwhile, KS Bharat entered the IPL 2023 mini-auction with a base price of INR 20 lakh. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made the opening bid for him, but soon Gujarat Titans (GT) joined and managed to acquire him for INR 1.20 crore. KS Bharat will most likely be serving as a backup for Wriddhiman Saha at GT.

The 41-year-old also said that he would encourage the young leggie to play as much franchise cricket as possible.

“It would be great. It would be awesome if he did. I’ve been involved with the IPL a couple of times so sometimes it works out for guys and sometimes it doesn’t. Why not?,” McCullum told BBC Test Match Special. 

“Why not get an opportunity to go and play under different coaches and different captains and rub shoulders with different players and pick up those experiences? What 18-year-old kid anywhere else in world cricket is going to get those chances? I think we should encourage it,” McCullum said.

“The important thing now is that we continue to look after him. I’ll encourage him to play as much franchise cricket and get as many experiences around the globe and play with different players, under different coaches, and in different conditions,” he added.

“I have some 2-3 years of cricket left in me. I am keeping myself fit and my performance in domestic cricket last and this season have not been bad either. I am hopeful to be bought by a franchise (at this week’s IPL auction),” he told PTI.

He added that leg-spin bowling is still very impactful across all three formats of the game.

“Earlier, people thought that the utility of leg spin was diminishing down with the advent of T20 cricket. But they have been completely proved wrong. Leg spin is not just effective in Test cricket but it’s equally effective in limited overs cricket.”

Amit Mishra has bagged 166 wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 154 games at an average of 23.95, an economy of 7.35 and a strike rate of 19.5. He is the joint-highest Indian wicket-taker in the marquee T20 league alongside leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

“Just look at the IPL. I being a leg spinner, along with Yuzvendra Chahal are the two most successful Indian bowlers in IPL history. So why not have more opportunities for the leg spinners in all formats of the game,” Mishra told PTI after a coaching session with budding leg spinners.

The 40-year-old said that there are more than dozens of leg-spinners who have the potential to represent the India National Cricket Team at the highest level.

“India has a big pool of leg spinners. We have quality spinners in domestic cricket. I do not want to take names but there are more than half a dozen leggies who have the potential to get into the Indian side.”

“I am very happy to train any young leg spinner who comes up to me for help,” Mishra said.

The 31-year-old opening batsman has set INR 1 crore as his base price for the mini-auction and will go under the auction hammer on December 23 in Kochi.

Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Chopra talked about Delhi Capitals’ mini-auction strategy. He said:

The Capitals haven’t made wholesale changes to their squad ahead of the mini-auction. Their biggest move was to trade expensive all-rounder Shardul Thakur to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). They have INR 19.45 crore left in their purse and have a maximum of five slots to fill.

The cricketer-turned-commentator said that the Capitals have a big purse and they should invest a big amount to acquire the services of a proper all-rounder.

He said: “They have a big purse left and don’t need too many players. They need a 10-12 crores player. If they can get an all-rounder because it seemed Mitchell Marsh is an all-rounder but doesn’t bowl.

“If he doesn’t bowl, none of your top four or five bowl. If they get a good all-rounder, they might think about not playing Rovman Powell, they might play Mitchell Marsh, David Warner at the top and an all-rounder along with Anrich Nortje.”

Aakash Chopra further said that the Delhi-based franchise might get Jason Holder at the auction.

He said: “Which are the all-rounders available? They are all usual suspects – Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes and Jason Holder. They can afford one of them for 10 to 12 crores. But the truth is none of them is going to be less than 15 crores, they might get Jason Holder in 7 to 8 crores but the others are going to be very expensive.”

On Tuesday, December 13, the complete list of the players who are set to go under the hammer at the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) auction was announced by the governing body.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 player auction, which will be a mini-auction, is set to be held on December 23 in Kochi. The window for the franchises to retain and release players ended on November 15 and 163 players were retained by the franchises whereas 85 players were released.

In addition to the money left over from the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction and the value of the players they release, each team will have an additional INR 5 crore to spend at the Indian Premier League 2023 mini-auction. This will lead to the teams having a purse of INR 95 crore.

Meanwhile, a total of 991 players, including 714 Indians and 277 overseas, registered for the IPL 2023 mini-auction. Now, the board has shortlisted the players and announced the IPL 2023 Player Auction list.

IPL 2023 Player Auction List Announced

In total 405 cricketers are all set to go under the auction hammer on December 23 in Kochi. Initially, 369 players were shortlisted by 10 teams, but later 36 additional players were requested and they were added to the final list.

Among 405 cricketers, 273 are Indians and 132 are overseas players of which 4 players are from associate nations. Also, a total of 119 capped players, 282 uncapped players, and 4 associate nation players will be entering the IPL 2023 mini-auction. A maximum of 87 players can be acquired in the auction of which 30 can be overseas.

The Impact Player concept, which is all set to be introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the IPL 2023, will most likely apply only to the Indian players participating in the marquee tournament, as per Cricbuzz.

On Friday, December 2, the BCCI officially confirmed the introduction of the Impact Player rule. The concept of the Impact Player was introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 and it received positive feedback. The concept used in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be very similar to the concept trialled during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

“…Also note that from IPL 2023 Season a tactical/strategic concept will be introduced to add a new dimension to IPL, wherein one substitute player per team will be able to take a more active part in an IPL match. The regulations pertaining to the same will be issued shortly,” BCCI said in a recent note to the teams.

The Impact Player rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player in place of any member of the starting XI. Teams taking part in a match will be required to submit the names of four substitutes at the time of toss and teams can only make a change in their playing XI by bringing in a substitute from the list of four players.

Also, the Impact Player can only replace any member of the starting XI before the end of the 14th over of either innings and the player who has been replaced will no longer be allowed to participate in the match. The Impact Player rule is not applicable when the game is reduced to less than 10 overs per side.

IPL 2023: ‘Impact Player’ Concept Likely To Apply Only To Indians

On Thursday, December 8, Cricbuzz reported that the Impact Player concept could apply only to the Indians. The board has not yet shared any rules and regulations on how will the concept work. However, BCCI managers, who are in touch with IPL teams, have indicated that only an Indian player could come in as a substitute player.

“Cricbuzz has learnt that the franchises have been explained a team cannot introduce an overseas player in place of another overseas player, nor will a team be allowed to have a foreign player in player in place of an Indian,” as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“Whether a foreign player will be allowed to come in if a team goes into a match with only three overseas players in the starting XI is not yet clear,” the report added.

Reportedly, the decision to not allow the overseas players to be used as the impact players has been made to make sure that only four foreign players are taking part in an IPL game.

Meanwhile, with the introduction of the Impact Player concept, many believe that the role of all-rounders could be diluted and the influence of specialists might increase.

“I think the next step is making sure that our local players are taken care of because we are going to see these leagues take over at some stage. We are going to see the IPL teams, who have got their hands in different competitions around the world, we are going to see them take over. It could end up being a bit like (LIV) golf – I could see it sort of heading that way.”

Notably, the Indian Premier League franchises are dominating the global T20 franchise cricket as they have acquired teams in several different leagues like Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the International League T20 (ILT20), and SA20.

IPL 2023 Auction: What Actually Is The ‘Impact Player’ Rule

The ‘Impact Player’ rule allows teams to bring in a substitute player in place of any member of the starting XI. Teams taking part in a match will be required to submit the names of four substitutes at the time of toss and teams can only make a change in their playing XI by bringing in a substitute from the list of four players.

Agarwal scored just 196 runs in 13 matches at an average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 122.50, including one fifty, in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Also, Punjab Kings removed Mayank Agarwal as captain, released him, and handed the leadership to Shikhar Dhawan.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Bravo, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are among the notable names, who have not registered for the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

Bravo, who is IPL’s leading wicket-taker, was recently released by Chennai Super Kings and he has decided not to enter the auction this time around. Also, Australian stars Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, who went unsold in last year’s auction, have not registered for the auction.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has roped in the 62-year-old Hugh Edmeades as auctioneer for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 player auction, which will be a mini-auction, is set to be held on December 23 in Kochi.

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction Hugh Edmeades, who took over from Richard Madley in 2018 and has been conducting the IPL auction ever since, collapsed midway through the auction due to postural hypotension.

Edmeades was instantly provided with medical help and he was found unfit to continue on day 1 of the two-day Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction at the Hotel ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru.

Sports presenter Charu Sharma was handed the auctioneer duties in the absence of Hugh Edmeades. However, Edmeades returned to conduct the final leg of the auction amid loud cheers and a standing ovation from the franchises and the BCCI officials.

Speaking to Sportstar on Wednesday, November 30, the renowned auctioneer Hugh Edmeades, who has conducted over 2500 auctions, said that he is thrilled to once again oversee the IPL auction. He said:

“I am thrilled to have been asked by the BCCI to conduct the 2023 IPL auction and am excited about visiting Kochi for the first time.”

Meanwhile, the window for the franchises to retain and release players ended on November 15 and 163 players were retained by the franchises whereas 85 players were released.

Also, in addition to the money left over from the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction and the value of the players released, each team will have an additional INR 5 crore to spend at the Indian Premier League 2023 auction. This will lead to the teams having a total purse of INR 95 crore.

The 25-year-old opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Maharashtra teammate, Azim Kazi, has stated that there are a few similarities between Gaikwad and the legendary India National Cricket Team captain MS Dhoni.

Gaikwad made his debut for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 under the leadership of Dhoni. In 2021, he had a breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League that helped him get into India’s scheme of things in white-ball cricket. The right-handed batter had scored 635 runs in IPL 2021 at an average of 45.35 and a strike rate of 136.26, including one century and four half-centuries.

Meanwhile, Dhoni paid a visit to Team Maharashtra when they were playing a game in Ranchi, as per The Indian Express. Talking about Dhoni’s interaction with Maharashtra players, Kazi said that when he saw Dhoni having a conversation he felt as if Gaikwad was speaking.

“Actually, when Dhoni bhai was speaking, it literally felt like it was Gaikwad. The things he said, was similar to what Rutu has been telling us. Since he has been part of CSK, he has been able to interact with Dhoni bhai and he is passing to us, but for sure there are a few similarities. We all have read and heard how Dhoni bhai operates the team and that is what Gaikwad has been doing here,” Kazi told the Daily.

For instance, he has left his hotel room open at all times and we can go and seek his help for anything. If a player is struggling, he is the first one to point it out off the field and say how to rectify it. Meanwhile, Cameron Green expressed excitement over his participation in the Indian Premier League and said that some of his West Australian teammates spoke highly of the IPL.

“Not managed … just not having too high expectations on yourself. With your rhythm, you might bowl 15 overs over a day, (but) I am probably not used to it. So you work into the series that way,” Green added.

Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has made a massive remark on the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that the tournament is the “best thing that has happened to Indian cricket”.

The 41-year-old Gambhir, who scored 4217 runs in the Indian Premier League, led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL triumphs, first in 2012 by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final and then in 2014 by defeating Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the final.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir asserted that many criticise and blame the Indian Premier League after the Men In Blue fail to perform well in major ICC tournaments, which he feels is unfair.

“IPL is the best thing that has happened to Indian cricket. I can say this with all my senses. There has been lot of backlash regarding IPL since it started. Every time Indian cricket does not do well, the blame comes on IPL, which is not fair. If we don’t perform well in ICC tournaments, blame the players, blame the performance, but it is unfair to point fingers on the IPL,” Gambhir said, as quoted by ANI.

The 41-year-old added that the Indian Premier League also provides financial security to the players.

“A sportsman can only earn till he is 35-36. IPL provides with financial security which is equally important,” he at the Turf 2022 and India Sports Awards of FICCI.

Gambhir believes that the BCCI should strictly appoint only Indian coaches for the India National Cricket Team as foreign coaches do no good to the side.

“One good thing that has happened in Indian cricket is that Indians have started coaching the Indian National Cricket team now. I strongly believe Indian should coach the Indian team. All these foreign coaches, who we gave a lot of importance to, come here to make money and then they vanish. Emotions are important in sports. The only people who can be emotional about Indian cricket are the ones who have represented their country,” Gambhir said.

While mentioning his role at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League, Gautam Gambhir said that he wants to see more Indian coaches in the marquee T20 league.

“I am a mentor of Lucknow Super Giants. One thing want to change is that want to see all Indian coaches in IPL. Because no Indian coach gets opportunity in Big Bash or any other foreign leagues. India is a superpower in cricket, but our coaches do not get opportunity anywhere. All the foreigners come here and get the top jobs. We are more democratic and flexible than other leagues. We need to give our own people more opportunity,” he added.

He revealed that he had a lengthy conversation with chief selector George Bailey on this matter.

“George and I have spoken and that is where it will stay. I had strong opinions on it and had a conversation, and that’s where it is. I spoke to George at length, it was a good conversation. Many different things were floated there,” he said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Starc added that he still has the ambitions to be a part of Australia’s T20I setup going forward. He said:

“It may have [hampered T20 bowling] but if I’d gone there, having no break and playing 12 months of the year, what does that affect? Do I break down? Does it affect my red-ball cricket? You can’t just sit there and go ‘he should go to the IPL’ because he’d be a better T20 bowler. What’s the downside of that? Do I give away a format of the game because I’m playing 12 months of the year? In my mind I don’t regret any of those decisions not to go. I wouldn’t change it.

“I feel like particularly last year if I take my Test cricket from the last 12-18 months, and how that’s benefited from the break that I’ve had through IPL periods, that’s paid for itself I guess.

“It’s always been my decision, and that is part of the reason that I do it, to give myself that break physically and mentally. And the other side of it is to see and spend time with my wife [Alysaa Healy] away from cricket. It’s hard enough juggling one cricket schedule, let alone two.”

Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as the new captain of the Chennai Super Kings. Under Jadeja’s leadership, the team didn’t perform as the franchise would have expected and he was removed midway through the tournament and Dhoni was reappointed as skipper.

Dhoni is already 41 and he is past his prime. The Chennai-based franchise is expected to look out for a captain at the Indian Premier League 2023 mini-auction. Notably, former SRH captain Kane Williamson and former PBKS skipper Mayank Agarwal are two notable names who will be available at the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Jaffer asserted that the Kiwi star Devon Conway would replace Dhoni as the wicket-keeper in the side while Gaikwad might be the next leader of the 4-time IPL champions.

“They will stick with Devon Conway (as wicketkeeper) I feel. He is the next in line. MS might look at somebody else as well. I don’t know who that will be. I feel they’ll have their eyes on who is gonna lead CSK after Dhoni. Gaikwad could be that one. Because he is young. He captains Maharashtra as well. “I hope Shivam Dube, Mukesh Chowdhary, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, and even Subhranshu Senapati – these guys need to have a good season.

“I hope these guys get an opportunity because this is the last season they will play along with Dhoni. So you want them to turn this season around. Become a better player and hopefully take the legacy forward. So these Indian guys need to stand up.

“Dube had a few seasons under his belt. But these 3 guys, Hangargekar hasn’t played any game, and Subhranshu hasn’t played any game. But you want these guys to take that leap from Dhoni and learn the trade and become better players – which we have seen with Chahar, Gaikwad and all the others that have developed. You want the Indian talent to come up in the IPL, that’s what I am looking forward to with this franchise,” Jaffer added.

He elaborated: “They have a lot of work to do. Dhoni’s best cricket is behind him as well. Yes, he is the best captain today also. If you make him stand as a captain, you will not get that value from any other captain.

“You will have to find an option for him as well, who can come along with Dhoni who can take the team forward. There were some issues with Ravindra Jadeja, we don’t know what happened there.”

He responded that SRH will be in trouble if they retain the explosive batter and he fails to perform well in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Harbhajan elaborated:

“The reputation with which he comes of playing the big shots, it will be a problem if you leave him and don’t get a player like him. The biggest problem is if you don’t leave him and he doesn’t perform. They will have to move away from names and slightly towards the deeds.

“He is someone you might want to leave, but you might feel that if you leave him you might not get a player like him. There is a hope that he can hit sixes, he can do Kieron Pollard’s job here. You will have to either motivate him so that he performs or ask him what his intention is.”

Former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that the Sunrisers Hyderabad should retain “hot property” Nicholas Pooran. He added that Pooran is a game-changer and he might attract huge bids at the IPL 2023 mini-auction if he is released.

“I don’t think they should release him. Nicholas Pooran is hot property. He is a left-handed batter who can change the game in the middle order. Definitely, his performance has not been that good but with the potential he has, anything can happen if you put him into the auction, he might go more expensive.

“You might not be able to get him back, so you don’t want to miss out. If you see last year, Markram scored runs in the middle order. Later Nicholas Pooran also batted well and scored runs. Only Kane Williamson was the one whose bat didn’t fire that much. If he is retained and his bat fires, this team will look much better.”

Pooran was bought by SRH for INR 10.75 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction. He played all 14 games for the franchise and scored 306 runs at an average of 38.25 and a strike rate of 144.33.

A source told Sportstar that the veteran Australian opener is unsure of his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

“At this stage, Aaron is still deciding if he would want to participate in the IPL. He has a young child at home, and now the event goes for 10 weeks which is too long. It will be a discussion in the coming period,” a source close to the player told Sportstar.

So far, Finch has been part of nine IPL franchises – Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Pune Warriors India, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders.
