Kane Williamson, the New Zealand cricket team captain, is making solid progress in his recuperation from knee surgery, but his participation in this year’s World Cup seems improbable.

The Black Caps white-ball captain injured the ACL in his right knee while playing in the Indian Premier League in April, leaving him fighting to be ready for the ODI tournament, which begins in October.

Williamson has been off crutches for a month and is now concentrating on strengthening the joint through cycling and gym exercises. He characterized the recovery process as challenging but doing well.

Kane Williamson has stated that he has not ruled out playing in New Zealand’s 50-over World Cup campaign, but that he is taking his recovery from a right knee injury one week at a time. In April, the New Zealand skipper suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture while playing for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. He got surgery in New Zealand shortly after and is currently undergoing recovery.

“I’m just trying to keep it week-to-week at the moment, I’m making progress, but I’m not putting a timeline on anything. I haven’t had such a long-term injury before but talking to other people that have, the journey is a bit of a long one so if you look too far ahead it can probably become a little bit daunting” Kane Williamson told Newstalk ZB’s Jason Pine.

“Whereas, one week at a time, ticking off those small markers, those little wins that are nice to experience. But also knowing that the journey won’t be completely smooth and you have a few setbacks along the way that you have to navigate” Kane Williamson added.

“I thought there must be some damage there”- Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson, the captain of the New Zealand cricket team, realized something was wrong when he landed awkwardly while attempting to collect a leaping boundary catch for the Gujarat Titans.

“I thought there must be some damage there, but at the same time pretty hopeful that maybe there wasn’t, Then we had scans and it reveals what it did so that reality hit, and that moment was sort of confronting, and then the focus shifts. Your plans change in such big ways and then there’s something you have to deal with which is new territory for me in my career” Kane Williamson said.

“At the same time, you reflect about how long you’ve played the game and not [having] been too injured. I can turn on the telly and it seems like every time you turn it on the ACL is being talked about. ‘Okay’, you’re not the only one in the world. It’s fairly common in cricket and other sports. It’s about working on it and putting in the effort. When you see the results it’s motivating” Kane Williamson added.
