New Zealand superstar Kane Williamson has reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings for batsmen released by the ICC on Wednesday (July 5).

The right-handed batsman, who is currently sidelined after suffering an injury during IPL 2023, has replaced England star Joe Root at the top spot. Williamson has reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Test Rankings for the first time since August 2021.

Root replaced Marnus Labuschagne as the No.1 ranked Test batsman last month after scoring his 30th Test century during the first Ashes Test. However, his stay at the top was quite short as he failed to do well with the bat in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, scoring 10 and 18.

The cricketing world could soon see a new number one Test batsman in ICC Test Rankings as Williamson is ahead of second-placed Steve Smith by just one rating point. Smith scored his 32nd Test century in the second Test to help Australia beat England by 43 runs. A good show in the upcoming third Test this week will see Smith reclaim the numero uno position.

ICC Test Rankings: Australia batsmen dominate:

Australia’s batsmen are currently dominating the ICC Test Rankings. They now occupy four of the top seven places on the Test batsmen rankings. Smith is followed by Labuschagne (third), Travis Head (fourth), and Usman Khawaja (seventh). Just like Smith, the other three Australian batsmen are also in contention to move to the top of the ICC Test Rankings.

For England, their opener Ben Duckett (up 24 places to 18th) and skipper Ben Stokes (up nine spots to 23rd) have made significant gains after doing well with the bat in the second Test. While Duckett played knocks of 98 and 83, Stokes smashed 155 runs in the second innings.

For India, only one player features in the top ten. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who is currently sidelined with an injury after a car accident last year, is at the tenth spot. Rohit Sharma (12th) and Virat Kohli (14th) are the other Indian batsmen in the top 20.
