Travis Head has made significant gain in the latest ICC Test Rankings released by the governing body of the game on Wednesday (July 12). The rankings have come after the third Ashes Test between Australia and England came to an end on Sunday (July 9) at Headingley.

The Australia batsman is now in touching distance of becoming the top-ranked Test batsman in the world. Head has jumped two places to take the second spot in the ICC Test Rankings after his impressive batting display in Leeds. He is now only behind New Zealand star Kane Williamson.

The southpaw, who played a 163-run knock in the WTC final against India last month, has scored three fifties in three Ashes Tests so far. In the third Ashes Test, he played knocks of 39 and 77. He has scored a total of 266 runs at an average of more than 44 and is now in contention to displace Williamson as the number-one Test batsman in the world.

Before the start of the third Test, Head’s teammate Steve Smith was in the second spot and was trailing Williamson by just one rating point. However, scores of 22 and 2 dashed Smith’s hopes of reclaiming the top spot. He has dropped to the fourth spot while Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has moved to the third spot. Marnus Labuschagne completes the top five.
