Playing his 100th Test match, Steve Smith could not make the most of his chance as he was dismissed cheaply in both the innings. Smith scored 22 as Australia were bowled out for 263 in the first innings. In the second, he scored just 2 as the Aussies are 116/4 at the end of day 2 leading by 142 runs.

England were bowled out for 237 in their first innings with skipper Ben Stokes scoring a counter-attacking 80. The next best score in the innings was Zak Crawley’s 33. Some handly contributions from Moeen Ali (21) and Mark Wood (24) meant England finished their first innings as close to the Australian total as possible.

The moment of the match on day 2 was Steve Smith’s dismissal. He chipped one straight to short cover and was caught by Ben Duckett off the bowling off Moeen Ali. Incidentally, Smith became his 200th Test wicket, a moment to remember for the England all-rounder.

As soon as Smith was dismissed and was returning back to the dugout, Jonny Bairstow said,” See ya Smudge.” The Australian batter got miffed by it and replied to the wicketkeeper, “What was that mate.” When Bairtsow ignore it, Smith shouted at him and said, “Hey,” The English wicketkeeper replied, “I said, cheers see ya later.”

The Ashes 2023 has started heating up with the players from both sides involved in verbal banters and cheeky dismissals. Bairstow himself was one of the targets in the second Test at Lord’s when he was cheekily stumped out by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

The umpires upheld the decision and his dismissal became a subject of huge debate in the build-up to the third Test. Bairstow himself was criticised for leaving the crease casually which resulted in him losing his wicket.

Australia earned a crucial 26-run lead heading into their second innings. However, they lost wickets quickly and the match is now evenly poised for England’s comeback on day 3.
