Former England skipper Eoin Morgan was surprised with Australia’s defensive batting style in the 2nd innings of the ongoing 3rd Test of Ashes 2023. Eoin Morgan also feels that Australia did not bat like someone who is ahead of the game.

Like the first two Tests, England vs Australia 3rd Test at Headingley is a nail-biting clash. Australia leads by 132 runs at the stumps of Day 2. Earlier in the 1st innings, Australia piled up 263-10 batting first. To this, England were bowled out for 237, trailing by 26 runs.

When You Are On Top You Really Try And Hammer It Home: Eoin Morgan

While speaking to Sky Sports about the Day 2 play of England vs Australia 3rd Test, cricketer-turned-commentator Eoin Morgan said Australia should have batted aggressively in the 2nd innings.

“I subscribe to the view that when you are on top you really try and hammer it home. We have become accustomed to this Australia side be so positive over the years that immediately when they try to play the long game or defensively, you are like ‘What is going on here?’, Eoin Morgan said.

“I was a little bit surprised. You can be gritty and chip away at the scoreboard and I don’t think Australia did that. They didn’t bat like a side who is ahead of the game because that is where I see them at the moment,” added Eoin Morgan, who led England to ODI WC title in 2019.

After earning a 26-run lead, Australia batted rather passively in the 2nd innings. Key players like David Warner (1), Marnus Labuschagne (33), and Steve Smith (2) lost their wickets cheaply. Usman Khawaja stormed 43 runs but lost his wicket before reaching a big knock.

Meanwhile, Australia leads the five-match Ashes 2023 series 2-0. Australia won the 1st Test by 2 wickets and the 2nd Test by 43 runs. The visitors hold an edge in the 3rd encounter too. If Australia wins the 3rd Test, they will retain Ashes 2023 trophy with two more games to go.
