Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin applauded umpire Nitin Menon for his decision on Steve Smith’s run-out during AUS vs ENG 5th Test. Ravichandran Ashwin took to Twitter to support third-umpire Nitin Menon’s decision of not out.

Steve Smith had a narrow escape from the run-out during the AUS vs ENG 5th Test match. When he was batting at 42, he almost lost his wicket through a run-out. As Smith tried to sneak a couple of runs, substitute fielder George Ealham threw the ball to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Bairstow dislodged the bails in time as Smith attempted a dive to be inside the crease. At first, it looked like a run-out. However, replays later showed the English wicketkeeper dislodged the bail with his gloves first. Till the time, he dislodged the other bail, Smith was inside the crease.

As a result, third umpire Nitin Menon adjudged Smith not out. His decision backfired inside the stadium. Many England fans were not happy with the call and booed the decision inside the stadium. Even, Australian players were surprised to witness the not-out decision.

Ravichandran Ashwin Applauds Nitin Menon On Twitter

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also expressed his views on the matter. Ashwin supported Nitin Menon for his decision and applaud him for taking the right call.

“What’s with the Ashes and substitute fielders. #ashes2023 #ashes2005 #garypratt #georgeeahlam. Have to applaud Nitin Menon for making the right decision”, the off-spinner tweeted. Have a look at his tweet below.

 

Meanwhile, Steve Smith went on score 71 runs in the match. With 6 boundaries, he scored the most runs for his team. Australia also managed to go past England’s 1st innings total.

Australia reached 295 in the board before all wickets, earning a 12-run lead after 1st innings. Other than Smith, Pat Cummins (36) and tailender Todd Murphy (34) played brilliant knocks towards the end.

Earlier, England posted 283-10 in 1st innings with a stunning 85-run knock by Harry Brook. Chris Woakes also added crucial 36 runs to the board. Woakes also hunted the most 3 wickets for the team later. For Australia, left-armer Mitchell Starc grabbed the most 4 wickets in 1st innings.
