In what was a shocking rather surprising announcement, England pacer Stuart Broad after the end of the Day 3 of the ongoing fifth Test of the Ashes 2023 at the Oval in London called time on his career, saying that the ongoing match will be the last for him. 

After his announcement, social media flooded with many emotional as well congratulatory messages for him. Stuart Broad, who was batting at an overnight score of 2 runs, received a great ovation from the fans, teammates, and opposition as he entered the field on Day 4.

But ahead of the Day’s play, he brought smiles to the faces of many fans as while walking into the group he gave quite a few autographs to the fans. His gesture impressed Australia batter Steve Smith as he shook his hands and patted his back in appreciation. Here is the video: 

 

Stuart Broad smashed a massive six on the last ball he faced in his career with bat off Mitchell Starc’s bowling. He became only the second player to achieve the feat. He joined former West Indies batter Wayne Daniel who hit six on the final ball of his career against Australia’s Tom Hogan at Port-of-Spain in 1984.

AUS vs ENG: I have always wanted to finish on the top – Stuart Broad on his retirement 

Stuart Broad while announcing his retirement said that he wanted to end his career on high and remarked that he wanted his last game to be part of the Ashes. Speaking to broadcasters, he explained: 

“Tomorrow or Monday will be my last game of cricket. It has been a wonderful ride. A huge privilege to wear the Nottinghamshire and the England batch as much as I have. I am loving cricket as much as I ever had, it has been such a wonderful series to be a part of and I have always wanted to finish on the top. This series feels like one of the most enjoyable entertainment I’ve been a part of.” 

Stuart Broad, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in December 2007, is just 5th bowler in the history of Test cricket with 600 wickets to his name. 

Not only this but Stuart Broad also surpassed Ian Botham to become England’s leading wicket-taker against Australia in Tests. He became the first bowler from his country to take 150 wickets in the Ashes.
