Aussie star batsman Steve Smith has said that he is hopeful of taking the opportunity to open in T20I matches for Australia with both hands.

The 34-year-old batsman has been recently included T20I squad for the upcoming three-game series against South Africa which will start from Wednesday (August 30).

While speaking to SEN 1170’s The Run Home, Steve Smith said that he was very excited when they gave him the opportunity and added that he just jumped in and grabbed the T20I call.

“They said they were going to give me an opportunity up the top a couple of weeks ago. It was something I jumped at, I haven’t done a great deal of it,” Steve Smith said.

The 34-year-old batsman further added that he did the same thing when he was in the Big Bash League (BBL) and told that the limited-over format is where one wants to bat in the top order.

“It was something I did in the Big Bash, I had a bit of success up there. It’s the place you want to bat, probably, in T20 cricket or white-ball cricket altogether. I’m getting the opportunity and hopefully, I can take it with both hands,” the Aussie batsman added.

Can Steve Smith shine in T20I cricket?

The 34-year-old made his T20I debut in 2010 against Pakistan and since then he has played 63 games and scored 1008 runs.

Steven Smith last played a T20I game for his country in 2022 against Afghanistan after which he has not played any T20 games.

However, with the experience and talent the Aussie batsman holds, he can easily make a difference in any format of cricket.

Steve Smith is mostly known for his batting in the middle order but in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, he is all set to take up the new role to partner up with David Warner and open Australia’s inning.

However, this showed the versatile talent he holds in him and how confident Steven Smith is to make the Aussie batting lineup stronger in the T20I series. The decision to open him with David Warner has come after his successful batting role in the BBL.
