    Ben Stokes is currently representing the England team in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The left-handed batter missed the first three matches of the tournament due to a hip injury. He returned to the team for the recent match but managed to score just five runs.

    In a video shared by the ICC on its Instagram account, Steve Smith acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Ben Stokes in delivering key performances for the England team in various formats of the game throughout his career.

    “He’s come back out of retirement. He’s obviously done it all in precious situations throughout his career in all formats of the game, but one probably sticks out is the final last World Cup in England at Lord’s. The way he was able to handle the team and the moment for England was incredible, and he’s a special player,” Steve Smith told the ICC.

    Steve Smith made an impressive start in the tournament, scoring 46 runs against India. However, he struggled to cross the 20-run mark in the following three games. He notched up 71 runs from 68 deliveries in the match against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

    England Fail To Impress With Their Performance In World Cup 2023

    After retiring from ODIs last year, Ben Stokes surprised everyone by reversing his decision and making himself available for selection last month. He made an instant impact by scoring 182 runs, setting a new record for the highest individual ODI score by an English batter.

    The England team had high expectations that Stokes’ return would strengthen their middle order for the World Cup. He was unavailable for selection in the first three tournament games. The team experienced two losses and managed to win just one match in his absence.

    The Jos Buttler-led team will face Sri Lanka in their next match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26. A victory against Sri Lanka could enhance England’s chances of advancing to the semifinals.
