Australia Playing 11 vs India – 1st T20I, 2023

Australia takes on India in a five-match T20I series with the first T20I in Visakhapatnam on November 23, Thursday. The match starts at 7 pm IST with the two teas locking horns in a bilateral series just three days after the end of the World Cup final.

Australia played an ODI series ahead of the start of the World Cup against India which they lost 2-1. They lost to India in the league stage but beat the Men in Blue in the final to lift the World Cup title for the sixth time.

Matthew Wade will lead the Australian team in the series with the senior players rested. Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa are the five players who are part of the T20I squad who played in the final.

Aaron Hardie has been named as David Warner’s replacement who pulled out of the T20I series. Cricket Australia in a statement said that Warner will return home on the back of a memorable World Cup campaign. He scored 535 runs at the World Cup at an average of nearly 50.

Despite the absence of the senior players, the Australian t20I side looks like a competitive unit. Several players are part of IPL franchises and know the Indian conditions well. The others play in the BBL regularly and are T20 specialists in their own right.

The series is an opportunity for players from both teams to make a statement and stay in the reckoning for next year’s T20 World Cup. India are the number-one ranked T20I side heading into this series, while the Aussies are placed fourth.

Steve Smith had a brain-fade moment and had to depart cheaply in the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The former Australia skipper had to walk out to bat in the fifth over after Australia lost two early wickets while chasing a modest total of 241. He opened his account with a gorgeous straight drive for a four off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. But just one ball later, he was trapped in front of the stumps and was given out lbw.

The India pace spearhead outfoxed Steve Smith with a well-executed slower delivery. After making a few adjustments in the field to sow seeds of doubt in Steve Smith’s mind, Bumrah bowled a lethal slower delivery. The right-handed batter was completely beaten by the ball. The Indian fielders appealed for an lbw decision and the umpire had little hesitation in raising his finger.

Brain fade moment from Steve Smith:

After being given out, Steve Smith immediately consulted his partner Travis Head before deciding against reviewing the decision. After talking to Head, he walked off the field straightaway without bothering the third umpire.

And it did not take him and his team long to rue to decision as replays showed that he would have been not out had he reviewed the original call. The replay showed that the impact was outside off stump and Steve Smith was not out.

Smith’s dismissal saw Australia getting reduced to 47 for 3. However, Australia managed to recover quickly thanks to a stunning century-plus stand between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne. At the time of writing this report, they were on 203 for 3 in the 37th over with Head batting on 116 and Labuschagne on 43.

Australia face off against India in the 2023 World Cup final in a rematch in many ways of the 2003 World Cup final and here is the Australia Playing 11 vs India for ICC World Cup 2023. The match will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Aussies are on an 8-match winning streak and have qualified for the final, beating South Africa in the semi-final. This was after they started their campaign with back-to-back losses, one against India.

However, since that defeat, the Aussies have resurrected their campaign and have played as a unit. Different players have stood up at other points in this tournament, helping their teams win games.

Adam Zampa has been their highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets from 10 games, and Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan was one of their highest individual performances in the tournament so far.

As a side, they are peaking at the right time. The Aussies kept their nerves to notch up a crucial win in the semi-final against South Africa in Kolkata. That win will bode them well ahead of the big final against India.

Australia, who are gunning for their sixth 50-over World Cup title, is expected to play the same side it played in the semi-final unless there are any last-minute injuries.

Steve Smith spoke to the ICC about what makes Australia the most consistent side in World Cups. Speaking about consistency, he said that it is something that the team has in its DNA.

“I am not sure I guess it’s on our DNA. I think the way we started in this tournament, we didn’t make a great start but we have been on a roll winning eight straight since then and we feel we are in a good place to take on India” said Smith.

The two teams are facing each other for the second time in the World Cup finals. The last time they played in the final was in 2003 when Ricky Ponting’s Australia defeated Sourav Ganguly’s India in a fairly one-sided contest in Johannesburg.

Virat Kohli and Steve Smith

There is absolutely no denying that Virat Kohli has been the best performer among the fab four in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The Fab Four is short for ‘Fabulous Four’ and is a popular term used to club together four batsmen- Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson – widely considered to be the best batsmen of this generation.

Virat Kohli has once again earned the bragging rights as the best among the fab four with his starring display in the ongoing World Cup. While the likes of Smith, Root and to some extent, Williamson have not really managed to make a big impact, Virat Kohli has proved his class once again.

He is one of the reasons behind India’s utter domination in the ongoing World Cup. He is currently the leading run-scorer in the tournament and has already broken Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in a single edition of the World Cup. In 10 matches, he has scored 711 runs with the help of three centuries and five half-centuries.

Ian Chappell shares his views on the Virat Kohli vs Steve Smith debate:

Talking about Steve Smith, the former Australia captain has had a poor campaign by his standards. In 9 matches, he has scored 298 runs with the help of two centuries. Following Kohli and Smith’s performances in the World Cup so far, former Australia skipper Ian Chappell has shared his views on the much-talked-about Kohli vs Smith debate.

Speaking on Wide World of Sports, the Australia great said: “No, we haven’t. (on Smith’s best form). Let’s go back to Kohli first. He doesn’t anymore but there was a point in his career where he averaged over 50 in all three formats. Now, that’s remarkable performance. I think Kohli is probably the best batsman of this era.

“I like his attitude. I heard him interviewed about batting and I think’s he’s got a terrific approach to batting. The other thing to look at is his fitness. He is 36-years of age, have a look at how he was running between the wickets. He is obviously put fitness right up there.

“Steve Smith, he is an important man in this Australian side, even though he hasn’t played his best. He plays spin better than anyone in the team and that might be really important in the final. Steve Smith tries to play his own way and that is important, but to me one of the crucial guys for Australia will be David Warner at the top,” he added.

Both Kohli and Smith will be looking to star for their respective teams in the upcoming World Cup final between India and Australia. The match is scheduled to take place on Sunday (November 19) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Australia Playing 11 vs South Africa – ICC World Cup 2023, Semi-Final 2

The batter Australia plays South Africa in the second semi-final in Kolkata on November 16, Thursday. This is Australia’s first match at this venue and it is the big semifinal of the ICC World Cup 2023. The match begins at 2 pm IST.

Australia entered the semi-finals finishing third on the points table. They won seven games and lost two ending with 14 points on the table. One of the losses came against South Africa who have been rampant in this World Cup when batting first.

Australia after the early losses recollected as a side and has been playing some consistent cricket. There are many players part of this World Cup squad who played the last World Cup and hence there is an evenness in the side.

Australia and South Africa have played 109 ODI matches with the Aussies winning 50 and the Proteas 54 games. Both have won three matches each out of the seen matches in World Cups. One match was tied which was the famous 1999 World Cup semi-final.

Heading into this World Cup, the two teams played a T2I and ODI series. Australia whitewashed the Proteas in the T20I series but lost the ODI series 3-2. The series was closely contested and another similar contest is on the cards.

Knowing South Africa’s problems while chasing, it is very evident that the Aussies will ask the Proteas to chase. Australia’s win over Afghanistan from an impossible situation will bode well for the side. It also highlighted the team’s batting depth.

Australia rested Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc in the match against Bangladesh. Both should be back in the XI in place of possibly Marcus Stoinis and Sean Abbott. The rest of the squad might remain the same.

Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith

Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne was over the moon after he guessed a DRS right during the Australia Vs England match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Steve Smith, his dear friend talked about how Marnus is still buzzing from getting that DRS right. Marnus Labuschagne played a brilliant innings against Englan, scoring 71 off 83 deliveries but the highlight for him was the DRS after which he was hugged and embraced by his teammate.

While England was batting, Joe Root nicked a ball which was caught by wicketkeeper Josh Inglis. However, the Australian team was not very keen on the appeal except for one guy and that was Marnus Labuschagne. Marnus was pretty confident that he heard a noise when the ball went past Root’s bat and somehow he convinced Australian captain Pat Cummins to take the DRS. The Ultra-Edge technology showed a spike as the ball went past Joe Root’s bat and he was declared out.

Everyone in the Australian team went to hug and embrace Marnus Labuschagne for his sharp ears which eventually came in handy. Marnus was buzzing from the fact that his instinct was correct and the Australian team got the wicket of Joe Root.

In a press conference, Steve Smith was asked about Marnus Labuschagne and how much was he buzzing after he got the DRS right against England. The way he was hugged and embraced by his teammates was something that was never seen before. Steve Smith referred to a saying that Marnus used to tell him which was, “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.”

Steve Smith stated, “He keeps using this saying to me, he thinks I talk a lot of rubbish but he goes ‘even a broken clock is right twice a day’. I think that worked for him yesterday or the day before. But yes he has got good ears to be fair, he hears a lot of things and he’s always confident something’s happened. Fortunately, he was right on this occasion.

Australia defeated England by a margin of 33 runs and is currently third on the points table. They need just one more win to officially qualify for the semi-finals and they will hopefully do that in their next match against Afghanistan.

Australia star Steve Smith is suffering from vertigo ahead of the crucial World Cup match against Afghanistan. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday (November 7) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The star batter has been dealing with vertigo for quite some time now. It is a medical condition characterized by a spinning sensation or dizziness, often accompanied by loss of balance. In 2020, he had revealed that he was battling vertigo after scoring a 62-ball century.

The right-handed batsman had revealed that he was not sure about playing the game but eventually decided to play and scored a series-clinching ton for his side. Australia would be hoping their star batter remains fit for the match against high-flying Afghanistan and replicates his 2020 performance after recovering from a bout of vertigo.

Steve Smith made the revelation about his latest battle with vertigo while talking to the media ahead of the game. According to journalist Bharat Sundaresan, the former Australia captain looked in discomfort and also missed the batting session in the nets with Australia’s first batting group.

“Steve Smith, who looked in quite a bit of discomfort during his press conference, revealed that he’s suffering from vertigo currently & for once he’s not part of the first batting group in the nets. He did sound confident of being good to go tomorrow,” Sundaresan wrote on his X handle.

Steve Smith in the World Cup so far:

Talking about Steve Smith’s performance in the World Cup so far, the Australia star has not really managed to deliver as per his reputation. In 7 games, he has scored 205 runs at a modest average of 29 and a strike-rate of less than 90. He has scored just one half-century so far. With Australia looking set to make it to the semifinals, Steve Smith would be looking to regain his best form.

Australia are currently third in the points table with 2 losses and 5 wins. They began their campaign with 2 losses before winning 5 in a row. While their place in the semifinal is still not confirmed, they look destined to qualify as they eye a record-extending sixth title.

Australia Playing 11 vs England – ICC World Cup 2023, Match 36

Australia will be up against England in match 36 of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad on Saturday, November 4. The match starts from 2 pm IST. A win for Australia in this game will take them a step closer to the semi-final berth.

Australia are on a four-match winning streak after losing their initial two games to India and South Africa. Their previous win was against New Zealand by five runs in a match where they scored 388 batting first.

The Aussie batters led by David Warner are in good form. Travis Head on his return to international cricket scored a ton against the Kiwis. With Warner, he formed a formidable opening stand against New Zealand and will look to follow it up against England.

Heading into this game, the Aussies will be missing Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh. While Maxwell is nursing a freak injury, Marsh has returned back home due to personal reasons. The Aussies will need to make a few replacements as they seek to find the right combination against England.

Australia’s cricket team is preparing for a strategic shift in its batting order as Travis Head returns to the XI necessitates some changes. Steve Smith, the prolific Australian batsman, is set to move down the order, a decision that surprised him but is being made to accommodate Head’s comeback.

Travis Head, who has been dealing with a hand injury, was uncertain for the match against the Netherlands but is now poised to make his first appearance in the World Cup. Australian selectors have shown their faith in Head by keeping him in the World Cup squad.

With Australia’s current record at 3-2, this adjustment in the batting order is expected to yield positive results. Travis Head will return to his traditional opening role, with Mitch Marsh moving back to no.3, and Steve Smith coming in at second drop.

Speaking about this change, Smith told the media (as quoted by SEN), “It’s a different sort of mindset, I think when you come in at three to four. So yeah, I got told if Trav was playing that I was going to be batting four. I’ll do whatever the team wants. I’ve got a pretty good record at three, so I was a bit shocked in a way, but I’ll do what I need to for the team.”

Steve Smith Might Play At Number Four

In One Day International (ODI) cricket, Steve Smith has an impressive batting average of 52.84 when batting at no.3, while that number falls to 34.31 at no.4. This decision to move Smith down the order suggests that Marnus Labuschagne may lose his place in the playing XI.

This move has sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts, with some favoring Smith’s experience and ability to handle high-pressure situations in a World Cup Semi-Final.

Steve Smith is seen as a safety blanket, an insurance policy, and a generational talent, making him a valuable asset in crucial matches. While Marnus Labuschagne may offer a sharper edge at the moment, the weight of experience and proven performance at the highest level still leans in favor of Steve Smith.

Australia is gearing up to face New Zealand in what promises to be a crucial encounter. With these strategic changes in the batting order, the Australian team is looking to solidify its position and make a strong push towards success in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Ace Australian cricketer Steve Smith offered high praise to Ben Stokes for his incredible achievements in international cricket across various formats. Steve Smith highlighted Ben Stokes’s remarkable performance in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand.

Ben Stokes is currently representing the England team in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The left-handed batter missed the first three matches of the tournament due to a hip injury. He returned to the team for the recent match but managed to score just five runs.

Ben Stokes Is A Special Player – Steve Smith

In a video shared by the ICC on its Instagram account, Steve Smith acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Ben Stokes in delivering key performances for the England team in various formats of the game throughout his career.

“He’s come back out of retirement. He’s obviously done it all in precious situations throughout his career in all formats of the game, but one probably sticks out is the final last World Cup in England at Lord’s. The way he was able to handle the team and the moment for England was incredible, and he’s a special player,” Steve Smith told the ICC.

Steve Smith made an impressive start in the tournament, scoring 46 runs against India. However, he struggled to cross the 20-run mark in the following three games. He notched up 71 runs from 68 deliveries in the match against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

England Fail To Impress With Their Performance In World Cup 2023

After retiring from ODIs last year, Ben Stokes surprised everyone by reversing his decision and making himself available for selection last month. He made an instant impact by scoring 182 runs, setting a new record for the highest individual ODI score by an English batter.

The England team had high expectations that Stokes’ return would strengthen their middle order for the World Cup. He was unavailable for selection in the first three tournament games. The team experienced two losses and managed to win just one match in his absence.

The Jos Buttler-led team will face Sri Lanka in their next match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 26. A victory against Sri Lanka could enhance England’s chances of advancing to the semifinals.

Roelof van der Merwe has displayed a magnificent fielding effort in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 clash against the Netherlands. Match 24 of the tournament is currently taking place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Australia after winning the toss and batting first have been right on the money with the the bat. They have batted magnificently well but one cannot ignore the class of Netherlands on the field in particular Roelof van der Merwe.

Roelof van der Merwe produced a staggering effort and cut short Steve Smith’s stay at the crease. The Australian batter was looking in great touch and was all set for a big knock. But the brilliance of Netherlands on the field saw him back in the hut.

Aryan Dutt bowled a short and wide delivery outside off. Steve Smith played a cut as he leaned back. The ball went low to Roelof van der Merwe brought out his unconventional reverse-cup grip and pouched it with fingers under the ball.

AUS vs NED: Roelof Van Der Merwe Takes A fantastic catch to dismiss David Warner but the umpire terms it not out

Before taking the catch of Steve Smith, Roelof van der Merwe also gobbled a brilliant catch that almost had David Warner back in the hut. It was low full-toss outside off, to which the batter punched in the air. The Netherlands fielder put in a great dive to his right and gobbled the catch.

However, the replays suggested that Roelof van der Merwe grabbed the ball with both hands and after catching it, his right hand left the ball and the left hand was grounded with the ball in it. David Warner was deemed not out and he batted magnificently well after that. He scored his second consecutive century of the tournament and would be looking to end with a big score.

Steve Smith has faced an injury scare ahead of Australia’s next game against the Netherlands in the ICC World Cup 2023. The premier batter was hit on the hand during the net session and left the practice blooded.

Australia will take on the Netherlands in their fifth game of the World Cup on Wednesday (25 October) in Delhi. Ahead of the game, they were engaged in an intense session, but batter Steve Smith was wounded as he faced a harsh cut on his arm.

Steve Smith was struck on the arm by a searing Sean Abbott delivery. After suffering a blow, the batter left the nets and was seen spending time with physios. The right-hander was seen getting bandaging on the cut he had faced.

Steve Smith has not quite set the stage on fire in the ICC World Cup 2023. The batter has bagged a series of low scores and would be eager to make a mark. Since the last few days, he has undergone various net sessions.

His poor form has been one of the main reasons why Australia lost their first two games of the tournament. Steve Smith would be hoping to set the stage on fire in the game against the Netherlands in Delhi. He will be crucial going into the tournament ahead.

AUS vs NED: Steve Smith fit, Travis Head likely to play against Netherlands; head coach Andrew McDonald optimistic

Travis Head has missed the first four games of Australia’s World Cup campaign. He faced an injury ahead of the tournament during the South Africa series. However, he has joined the squad and is training well.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald is optimistic about Travis Head playing the game against the Netherlands. Talking about the same, he explained (as quoted by DailyMail):

“We’re really optimistic that he will be available should all things go well today, and most importantly the way he pulls up tomorrow will be a key factor. He’s got to be skill ready, that’s the next layer. It’s one thing to be physically ready, and so that’s a big step today in the nets, the way he goes. He’ll face bowlers and he’ll give us an indication of what he can and can’t do post that session.”

It remains to be seen if Travis Head will be back for the next game. Also, Steve Smith is fit after suffering the blow and will most likely play against the Dutch.

Azam Zampa having picked four wickets will take confidence from his last game into this one with the Pakistani batters currently struggling against both pace and spin.

In this article, we predict Australia’s XI for their match against Pakistan. Having just won against Sri Lanka, they would not change their winning combination.

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has recommended a change in the national team’s batting line-up for the upcoming matches in the ICC World Cup 2023. Matthew Hayden said that Cameron Green should replace Marnus Labuschagne in the playing XI.

Travis Head has been ruled out of the first half of the tournament due to an injury. Mitchell Marsh stepped in as an opener alongside David Warner in the first three matches. Marnus Labuschagne secured his place in the middle order following recent performances.

It Creates Pressure Through The Top Six – Matthew Hayden

When questioned about the effectiveness of pairing Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Hayden expressed that having two anchors doesn’t work for the team’s batting strategy.

“I don’t think it does. I don’t think they’ll change things either. To me, they have got a front anchor out and a back anchor out, and the innings goes nowhere because they are both well and truly stable,” Hayden told ESPNcricinfo.“It’s fine to have one stabilizer, I think it’s really important to have a mind like Steve Smith at the top of the order when you start to set totals or chase totals, you need that computer mind, but when you have two of them in a row I think it creates pressure through the top six so I’d make a change there.”

Cameron Green At The Top – Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden suggested that Cameron Green should be given the freedom to open for Australia, emphasizing Green’s ability to score aggressively.

“Give him a license, Cam Green at the top. To me, he’s a kid who hasn’t necessarily found his tempo in any format of the game but what we saw here during the IPL is that Mumbai Indians just sent him out and said, kid, just smash it,” Hayden added.

“He’s got huge levers, got great scoring abilities. Not so good when it comes to playing spin through the middle but by that stage if he’s smashed Pakistan for 70 or 80, he’s done his job.”

“Mitch [Marsh] won’t like to come down to three because he’s had great success in his ODI career opening but soon enough you are going to get [Travis] Head back in there so ultimately Mitch is going to bat three, so make the change, create the initiative, do something different rather than sit and wait.”

Australia Playing 11 vs Sri Lanka – ICC World Cup 2023, Match 14. Australia takes on Sri Lanka in ICC World Cup 2023 match 14 on Monday, October 16 in Lucknow. The match starts from 2 pm IST with both teams still looking for their first win in this World Cup campaign. The Aussies are placed ninth on the points table with an NRR of -1.846.

Australia have underperformed so far in the tournament. They have lost back-to-back games against India and South Africa by big margins to start their campaign. They now have to win by a big margin against Sri Lanka to pull themselves up the ladder on the points table.

Australia potentially needs to win their next seven matches on the trot to give themselves a chance of making the semis. They are yet to play the likes of England and New Zealand with a lot of concerns for the side in terms of fitness and team combinations.

With Ashton Agar ruled out due to injury and Travis Head not yet fully fit, Australia have a tight squad of players to choose from and cannot make too many changes as well. Thus skipper Pat Cummins needs to find inspiration from his players to get his team over the line. Cummins himself needs to have a good game against Sri Lanka to start things off.

Australia have a very favourable head-to-head record against Sri Lanka in World Cups. In 11 matches, they have won eight games and lost just two. They need to use the conditions to their advantage in Lucknow. Having played against South Africa recently they have a better understanding of the conditions than Sri Lanka.

Playing the same side is the best bet for them given the state of injuries to players. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne can be used with the ball by Cummins. In this article, we predict Australia’s playing XI against Sri Lanka.

One between Green and Stoinis should play as the seam-bowling all-rounder. Stonis was chosen over Green against South Africa but the move did not pay off. Both are similar kinds of players and hence only one can play.

Alex Carey (WK)

Alex Carey will slot in at seven and is the specialist keeper. He is a good batter against spin bowling and needs to bring his shots into play against the Sri Lankan spinners. Josh Inglish was preferred over him against the Proteasd.

Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne expressed the team’s need for clarity from World Cup match officials regarding Marcus Stoinis’s controversial dismissal against South Africa. Marnus emphasized that the umpire’s mistakes should not impact the outcomes of games.

Steve Smitha and Marcus Stoinis were dismissed in a controversial manner during the ICC World Cup 2023. Smith attempted a flick shot but missed, resulting in the ball striking his pad. The on-field umpire ruled him not out, but the third umpire overturned the decision.

Marcus Stoinis was caught down the leg side off Rabada, sparking a debate as the ball appeared to come off the batter’s bottom hand, which seemed not to be in contact with the handle. However, the umpire still ruled him out, leaving Australia in trouble at 70/6.

It Was Certainly Confusing – Marnus Labuschagne

Speaking after Australia’s 134-run loss, Marnus Labuschagne called for ensuring that they get the right decisions from the umpires in future matches of the marquee tournament.

“It was certainly confusing and I’m sure we’ll get clarity or we’re going to seek for clarity because it’s a World Cup and we don’t want small decisions that can be avoided to change the outcomes of games. Obviously, in the situation we were in it’s hard to say that it was going to change the outcome but for the future you certainly want to make sure we get them right.”

I’m Not Here To Sit And Make Excuses – Marnus Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne acknowledged that it was challenging to pinpoint the exact problem but noted that their fielding performance didn’t meet their standards in the match.

“We certainly have played a lot, but I’m not here to sit and make excuses. We’re playing the World Cup for Australia. We have to be ready, we have to be better than that.”

“It’s hard to put your finger on it. We’re one of the best fielding sides in the world, we pride ourselves on that. And we just didn’t seem to get it right today,” Marnus concluded.

The Australia team has yet to open their account in the 10-team points table for the showpiece event. The Men in Yellow will take on Sri Lanka in their next match in Lucknow on Monday, October 16.

The 34-year-old Australia National Cricket Team star batsman Steve Smith was absolutely shocked after the DRS verdict didn’t go in his favor in the 10th match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against Temba Bavuma-led South Africa National Cricket Team at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday, October 12.

Steve Smith came to bat in the middle after Australia lost early wickets. He scored 19 runs off 16 balls, with 4 fours, before getting dismissed, courtesy of a controversial DRS decision.

The premier South Africa pacer Kagiso came to bowl the 10th over of the innings and on the 5th ball he trapped Smith LBW. South Africa decided to take a DRS after wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock convinced Temba Bavuma to go upstairs.

On the replays, it showed that there was no connection between the bat and the ball. The ball-tracking showed that the ball would have hit the leg stump, and the batter was declared out LBW. Smith and Marnus Labuschagne were left shell-shocked after the decision and even the on-field umpire Joel Wilson looked surprised as he raised his finger.

We are really proud of efforts in the back end – Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell had a brilliant day with the ball as he gave away just 34 runs in his 10 overs and bagged two wickets. During the mid-innings break, Maxwell said that he is enjoying the role of specialist spinner in the team. Glenn Maxwell also said that they were proud of their efforts in the back end of the innings. He elaborated:

“It happened in little different flows – felt like they were well ahead, felt they were on track for about 350+, the last 15-odd overs we dragged it back really well. Got wickets at crucial times.. We are really proud of efforts in the back end.”

“(On his bowling) There was a little bit of help out there, bigger boundaries as well, just tried to hit them to the longer boundary as much as possible. It’s been enjoyable to have a bit more bowling role.”

Batting first, South Africa posted 311 for 7 on the board after all the batters chipped in with crucial runs. Quinton de Kock top scored for his side as he hit his second consecutive ton of the ICC World Cup 2023 and Aiden Markram smashed a brilliant fifty.

Australia Playing 11 vs South Africa – ICC World Cup 2023, Match 10. Australia takes on South Africa in match 10 of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Lucknow on October 12. The match starts at 2 pm IST and is the second game for both teams in the tournament. This is the first of five games to be played in Lucknow.

Australia are heading into this game after their loss to India in their campaign opener in Chennai. The team needs to do a quick turnaround as they get set to face the mighty Proteas. The Aussies just recently lost an ODI series against South Africa leading into the World Cup.

They will be playing at a venue where aids spin and they are short on spin resources. Ashton Agar is unfortunately ruled out of the World Cup and Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell are the only two spin options the Aussies have. India negated their threat particularly well in the match not giving them wickets and particularly playing the leggie well.

Pat Cummins, the skipper has got a few selection headaches ahead of this game in terms of getting the right combination. They will continue to miss Travis Head and Ashton Agar. Given the resources they have, the combination they played against India was the best combination they could play in this game as well.

Australia were bowled out for just 199 in Chennai and needs to put up a better effort with the bat whether batting first or chasing. In this article, we predict their XI against South Africa.

AB De Villiers

AB de Villiers has pinpointed the crucial wicket of Steve Smith as the linchpin of the impending clash between Australia and South Africa on October 12 in Lucknow.

Both teams had contrasting starts to their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. The Proteas secured a high-scoring victory over Sri Lanka while the Aussies succumbed to defeat against India in Chennai.

Steve Smith, who was the highest run-scorer for Australia in their loss to India, boasts a commendable record against South Africa. In the 21 matches he has played against the Proteas, Smith has amassed 684 runs at an average of over 40, including two centuries. AB de Villiers, writing on the ICC’s website, emphasized the importance of early wickets in unsettling the Australian team, even if they appear somewhat fragile following their loss to India.

De Villiers recognizes that a wounded Australian team can be exceptionally dangerous, making it imperative for South Africa to apply early pressure. He stated, “It might sound obvious, but Steve Smith’s wicket will be the most important. He holds everything together for Australia and if we can get him out early, I am confident we can get the job done,”

AB De Villiers Acknowledged The Role Of Bowlers

AB De Villiers acknowledged that while the focus has been primarily on the batters, the bowlers will play a vital role if South Africa aspires to be considered legitimate contenders. He pointed out that the absence of Anrich Nortje due to injury is a significant blow and places added responsibility on Kagiso Rabada to lead the bowling attack.

“All the focus has been on the batters, but this is a huge test for the bowling attack if South Africa wants to be seen as real contenders, especially without Anrich Nortje – no one knows how to get it done at World Cups like Australia,”

De Villiers revealed his conversation with Rabada, stating, “The loss of Nortje to injury is a real blow and means there is extra pressure on Kagiso Rabada to lead the attack. I spoke to him last week, and he is determined to step up to the plate and lead by example as one of the best bowlers in the world.”

As South Africa gears up to face Australia, the focus is firmly on seizing early opportunities, intending to dismantle the linchpin, Steve Smith, while also recognizing the crucial role their bowlers must play to emerge as strong contenders in the tournament. The two teams will face each other on 12th October at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Steve Smith during the IND vs AUS match of ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday. Reacting to the same, former India coach Ravi Shastri said that Steve Smith is Ravindra Jadeja’s bunny.

Ravindra Jadeja bowled a stunning spinner to hit the wickets of Steve Smith during IND vs AUS match. Moreover, Jadeja dismantled Australia’s middle order by hunting three crucial wickets of Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Ale Carey in the span of his two overs.

Steve Smith Is Ravindra Jadeja Bunny – Ravi Shastri

While speaking to Star Sports, former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri said that Steve Smith is Ravindra Jadeja’s bunny as the latter always gets him out. Shastri also noted that Jadeja has dismissed Smith 10 to 12 times.

“Dream dismissal and he has dismissed him 10 to 12 times. He (Smith) is his bunny. It is not that easy to play such a delivery because of the speed at which he bowls. As a batter, you don’t know which ball is going to turn and which ball will go straight,” Ravi Shastri said.

“He (Jadeja) himself said in the interview that he doesn’t know which ball will turn and which will go straight. If he doesn’t know, how will the batter know? So he plays inside the line at times and outside the line on other occasions,” he added.

Shastri also said that batsmen become helpless on Jadeja’s delivery as there is a chance of either bold or LBW.

“If he plays outside, he becomes leg-before and if he plays inside, it hits the stumps, just like it happened with Smith. It’s not easy as he will trouble anyone. If he gets a surface like this, he becomes the most difficult bowler because his every ball does not turn,” the 61-year-old further added.

Jadeja picked 3 wickets for just 28 runs in his 10-over spell against Australia and was the highest wicket-taker for his team. India also defeated Australia by 6 wickets later by chasing down the 200-run target.

IND vs AUS: Watch - Virat Kohli's Epic Reaction As Ravindra Jadeja Stuns Steve Smith With Unplayable Delivery

The 34-year-old India National Cricket Team left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja bamboozled the 34-year-old Australia National Cricket Team batter Steve Smith with an unplayable delivery in the fifth match of the ICC Cricket World 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first in the match. The Aussies were off to a poor start in the match as the explosive opening batsman Mitchell Marsh got out for a 6-ball duck.

David Warner and Steve Smith steadied the ship for Australia after losing the early wicket. They added 69 runs in 85 balls to push India on the back foot before Kuldeep Yadav brought his side into the game by dismissing opener David Warner for 41.

Smith, however, kept fighting out in the middle against the Indian bowlers and he was looking good with the bat. He added 36 runs in 64 balls with Marnus Labuschagne before getting dismissed by Jadeja in the 28th over.

Watch: Ravindra Jadeja Castles Steve Smith

Ravindra Jadeja came to bowl the 28th over of the first innings and on the first ball of the over, he produced a magical delivery that left the Australian batsman Smith absolutely stunned.

Jadeja bowled a length ball around the middle and leg stump and Smith tried to defend it, but the ball turned to crash into the off-stump. Smith looked stunned after getting out and looking at Jadeja’s excellent delivery, Kohli gave an epic reaction.

Watch The Clip Here:

After dismissing Smith, Jadeja picked two more wickets in his next over as he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey to push Australia on the back foot. At the time of writing the report, Australia were at 134/5 after 34 overs.

Australia Playing 11 vs India– Match 5, ICC World Cup 2023. Australia take on India in match 5 of ICC World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday, October 8. This is the World Cup opener for both teams. In 12 World Cup matches, Australia have won against India 8 times.

Australia are heading into this World Cup after losing the ODI series against India 2-1. They won the final ODI which was more of a morale-boosting one. Thus they have some sort of winning momentum heading into their opener.

Australia have won two of the last three games they played against India in Chennai. Their previous win was earlier this year in March 2023 where 269 turned out to be a winning score batting first.

The Aussies are an experienced unit led by Pat Cummins. Almost close to 10 players from their squad were a part of the 2019 ODI World Cup squad. Having played against India recently, they are well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian players. They are also well aware of the conditions that they are expected to get in Chennai.

The Aussies have a few injury concerns. The likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Steve Smith are all returning from injuries. Though fit, they will be concerned about not getting any more injuries. Ashton Agar is missing the World Cup with a calf injury. Australia are also set to miss Travis Head for the first few games as he is injured in his left hand.

Despite missing Head, Australia have a strong core of players who can stand up in tournaments like the World Cup. The five-time World Champions are a different beast in the World Cup and certainly start as one of the favorites alongside India.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Virat Kohli and Steve Smith are invaluable players for their respective teams in ODIs. Sanjay Manjrekar’s words arrived after some people alleged that it might be the last ODI World Cup for both Virat Kohli and Steve Smith.

Virat Kohli is currently 34 years old and will play his fourth ODI World Cup in ICC World Cup 2023. He is one of the greatest batsmen to ever play for India. Steve Smith, who is also 34 at the moment, is a crucial middle-order batsman for Australia.

Virat Kohli And Steve Smith Are Invaluable For Their Teams: Sanjay Manjrekar

While speaking on Star Sports, Sanjay Manjrekar shared his views on talks of the last World Cup for Kohli and Steve Smith. Manjrekar said that we should not say such things to players like Kohli and Smith.

“We should never say things like that with people like Virat Kohli and Steve Smith, because these are guys who love batting so much and are willing to put in the hard yards to keep batting forever and batting at a certain level,” Manjrekar said.

He also added that Kohli and Smith are invaluable for their sides in the ODI format.

“So, yes, Virat Kohli, 50 overs is his format. Steve Smith as well. Doesn’t fit perfectly in T20 cricket, but these are guys who are very good in that middle section when the game seems a little flat and boring. But this is the phase of the game that decides the fate of the game, and that’s where Steve Smith and Virat Kohli are invaluable for the side,” the former Indian players further added.

Star Australian batsman Steve Smith acknowledged that batting at number three is his preferred position ahead of their first match in the ICC World Cup 2023. However, Steve Smith admitted that he is willing to be more flexible according to the team’s situation.

Steve Smith played the majority of his career at the No. 3 position for Australia in the 50-over format. The right-handed batter scored 3,880 runs at an average of 53.89, including 11 centuries. Overall, he has scored 5,054 runs at an average of 44.33, with 12 centuries.

Speaking ahead of the match against India, Steve Smith expressed hope that Travis Head would recover as early as possible.

“It would be interesting. Fingers crossed, Heady can still come up. He still got a fair way to go before he is potentially fit. Three is my favourite position but I’d bat wherever (asked to), I suppose,” Steve Smith said.

Head was included in the World Cup 2023 squad despite not being 100 percent fit to play. Chief Selector George Bailey stated that Head would be available for the later stages of the prestigious tournament.

Marnus Labuschagne Is A Very Good Player – Steve Smith

Steve Smith expressed confidence that Marnus Labuschagne would secure the No. 4 spot in the batting lineup for the showpiece event. Smith believes Labuschagne will play a crucial role in the team’s success, given his impressive form.

“He’s come back and he’s taken his opportunities, got himself into the squad and now he’s obviously likely to bat in the top-four throughout the World Cup,” Smith said.

“I think the way he’s playing at the moment, he’s now confident, he’s got the feel for one-day cricket and the tempo and all those kinds of things. Once he gets there, he’s a very good player. So, not surprised.”

Labuschagne secured a berth in the World Cup squad following impressive performances against South Africa and India. He scored 421 runs in his last 8 innings at an impressive average of 60.14 and a strike rate of 97.67, including a century and two fifties.

The Pat Cummins-led team will take on the Rohit Sharma-led team in their first match of the World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8.

Virat Kohli and Steve Smith have not let their rivalry affect the ever-growing camaraderie between them. One of the best moments between the two was witnessed during the 2019 World Cup match between India and Australia.

After serving a one-year ban for the ball-tampering scandal, Steve Smith returned to international cricket through the World Cup and received a hostile reception from the opposition fans. And when the Indian fans also did the same during the game, Virat Kohli intervened.

The then-India skipper was batting at that time and he decided to take a stand for Smith. Between the overs, he dissuaded the fans from doing so and asked them to cheer him instead. Later, the India star was presented with the ICC’s ‘2019 Spirit of Cricket’ award for his gesture.

Steve Smith reacts to Virat Kohli’s dancing:

The strong friendship between Steve Smith and Virat Kohli was evident once again after the former shared a clip featuring the latter’s hilarious antics on the field during the third ODI between India and Australia in Rajkot.

During a drinks break when Steve Smith was sitting on a chair and receiving treatment from the physio as he battled intense heat in Rajkot, Virat Kohli decided to have some fun. The former India skipper approached Steve Smith’s batting partner Marnus Labuschagne. He was seen poking Labuschagne’s belly before showing off some hilarious dance moves.

Sharing the clip on his Instagram story, Steve Smith tagged Virat Kohli and wrote: “Nice moves.”

Talking about the game, Australia beat India by 66 runs to avoid a whitewash and end their 5-match losing streak in ODIs. India won the three-match series after winning the first two games.

Batting first, Australia posted a mammoth total of 352 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs with David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, and Labuschagne scoring fifties. In reply, India were all out for 286 despite fifties from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

India and Australia are currently squaring off with each other in the dead rubber third ODI in Rajkot. The heat in the city has taken its toll on the players but despite that Virat Kohli has managed to hog the headlines with his antics in the middle of the innings.

Australian batter Steve Smith was struggling to get going in the heat of Rajkot. In the middle of the innings, he took a drink break and had wet towels all around him. Even a chair was brought out for him and he underwent some treatment.

Marnus Labuschagne was standing on the side and it was at that moment when Virat Kohli seized in the opportunity to tease him. The Indian batter came close to him and danced hilariously in front of him. After that, he poked him as well before the two engaged in a conversation.

Here’s the video of the incident:

After that break, Steve Smith didn’t last too long on the pitch. His stay at the crease was cut short by Mohammed Siraj. The pacer trapped him in lbw for 74 runs. The game currently hangs evenly poised with both teams leaving no stone unturned in being at the top. Australia are keeping the scoring intact whereas Indian bowlers are chipping in with regular wickets.

Virat Kohli likely to open the innings in the third IND vs AUS ODI

Virat Kohli is likely to open the innings in the ongoing third ODI against Australia in Rajkot. Shubman Gill has been released from the squad whereas Ishan Kishan isn’t picked in the dead rubber third game due to his illness. This makes way for the dream duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to open.

Virat Kohli doesn’t have a great record as an opener in ODIs. He has played seven games as an opener and in that he has scored just 166 runs at an average of below 24. If he partners Rohit Sharma in the last game, he would be hoping to better that record.

Australian batter Steve Smith achieved a massive feat in the ODIs. The batter became the fourth fastest player from his country to score 5,000 runs in the 50-over format. He joined the likes of greats; David Warner, Aaron Finch and Dean Jones.

Steve Smith achieved the feat in the ongoing dead rubber third ODI against India in Rajkot. The batter has looked a class apart in the last game of the series and has timed the ball to perfection, putting his team in the dominating position.

Steve Smith looked fluent from the time he came out to bat. The batter arrived at the crease after David Warner was back in the hut following a brisk fifty. He cashed on the starts given by the openers and played some breathtaking strokes that put Indian bowlers under pressure.

Steve Smith scored runs all over the park and made sure that he kept the run rate high. After failing in the first two games, he made sure that he set the stage on fire in the last game and entered the ICC World Cup 2023 on a high note.

Steve Smith smashed a stupendous half-century that put Australia in the driver’s seat. With the way he was batting, it looked like he wouldn’t get anything less than a hundred. But a lapse in concentration saw Mohammed Siraj cut short his stay at the crease.

Steve Smith scored 76 runs off 61 balls. He hit 8 fours and 1 six in his innings. During his innings, he also surpassed 5000 runs in ODIs and became the fourth fastest from his country. The batter achieved the feat in 129 innings and at a rollicking average of 44.37.

Fastest to 5000 ODI runs for Australia; Steve Smith joins an elite list

David Warner is the fastest Australian batter to achieve 5000 runs in ODIs. He completed the milestone in 115 games and is followed by Aaron Finch, who took 126 innings. Late Dean Jones is also on the list and is followed by Steve Smith.

Ben Stokes and Steve Smith

Steve Smith and his Australia teammates have poked fun at Ben Stokes over his infamous dropped catch during the fifth Ashes Test between England and Australia in July.

On a tense final day, the England Test captain committed a big blunder. Ben Stokes was standing at leg slip when Steve Smith leaned forward to defend Moeen Ali’s delivery. But Smith could only edge the ball and the ball ballooned towards Ben Stokes who made a timely jump to catch the ball.

But as he was bringing his hand down, it hit his right knee and the ball slipped out. According to the rules, it was not out as Ben Stokes was not in control of the ball but his teammates still appealed for a catch only to see umpire Joel Wilson give his decision in the favour of the batsman.

The England players then asked Ben Stokes to send the decision upstairs. The allrounder was visibly reluctant to take a review but eventually succumbed to his teammates’ request. Unsurprisingly, the third umpire also adjudged it not out.

Australia players poke fun at Ben Stokes:

Almost two months after the incident, a number of Australian players poked fun at Ben Stokes for his mistake and his decision to review the catch. Steve Smith said that he was surprised to see Ben Stokes going upstairs despite knowing that it was not out.

“When Stokesy tried to catch the ball and threw it onto the deck. Looking at him and watching his body language, he knew that it was not out. It was an interesting choice to go upstairs because I am pretty sure he knew that it was, that he’d thrown the ball away,” Smith told ABC Sport.

Travis Head then recalled that Steve Smith had asked the England captain to grab the ‘spirit of cricket’ moment, saying: “Steve had some choice words at the time which is when you can see him pointing there saying. Yeah, questioning whether that’s the grey area of the spirit of cricket again.”

“I just said here’s your spirit of cricket chance,” Smith said.

Spirit of cricket was one of the biggest talking points in the series following Jonny Bairstow’s contentious dismissal during the second Ashes Test. Ben Stokes’ drop and his subsequent decision to review it gave the Australian cricket fraternity to hit back at England over the spirit of cricket debate.

Australia Playing 11 vs India – 3rd ODI, 2023. Australia takes on India in the third and final ODI in Rajkot on September 27, Wednesday. The match starts from 1.30 pm IST with India having won the first two ODIs. The Men in Blue are now looking for a clean sweep while Australia is a consolation win.

Nothing has gone right for Australia since the ODI series against South Africa. They have now lost five ODIs on the trot including the last two IND vs AUS ODIs. India have won big in the first two ODIs first by five wickets and then by 99 runs in the second ODI.

While the Indian team have been peaking at the right time, Australia are struggling with injury concerns and also struggling to find the right combinations. The ill-timed injury to key players is something that the management needs to address quickly.

For Australia, skipper Pat Cummins will return to lead the side. Mitchell Starc should also be back as should be Mitchell Starc. Marcus Stoinis who was rested for the second ODI should be back in the third. There are injury concerns over Glenn Maxwell who is recovering from an ankle injury. Though he is expected to be back in the XI, it will be interesting to see how he goes in the game. Ashton Agar who is part of Australia’s World Cup squad is ant available for this series.

Fast bowlers Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis have been ruled out of the upcoming third ODI between India and Australia. Johnson is down with a hamstring injury while Ellis is troubled with a groin injury for which the bowlers will not play the second ODI.

Johnson made his debut in the second ODI going for 61 runs in 8 overs while remaining wicketless. There are also reports of Travis Head being unavailable for the first half of the World Cup with a fractured left hand. In this article, we predict Australia’s likely playing XI for the third ODI against India in Rajkot.

Australian star pacer Mitchell Starc defended his teammate and star batter Steve Smith amid his poor form before the start of the ICC World Cup 2023.

The ICC Cricket World Cup is going to start on the 5th of October. Teams are ready to battle against each other on the biggest platform.

Australia who are the 5 times champions of the ICC ODI World Cup have also reached India before the World Cup and are playing a 3-match ODI series against the hosts. This would help the Australian team to adapt to the situations before the World Cup.

In the ongoing 3-match ODI series, Australia have performed poorly as they lost the first two matches by huge margins. In the first match, India beat Australia by 5 wickets, and in the second match, India scored the highest ODI score against Australia and won by 99 runs [DLS Method].

There was poor performance in both the batting and bowling departments in the first two matches. It is a concern for the team management as they will start their World Cup campaign with a series of losses.

In the batting department, Steve Smith’s performance is a sign of worry for the team as the Australia legend has just scored 41 runs in 2 matches. In the 2nd match, he went for a duck.

Mitchell Starc backs Australian batter Steve Smith after his poor performance

Steve Smith’s struggles began earlier in the Test series held in February-March, where he scored only 145 runs in four Test matches. After his two back-to-back failures in the ongoing ODI series against India, his teammate Mitchell Starc has backed him.

On asking about Smith’s current form, Starc said (as quoted by TOI),” No His (Smith) numbers speak for himself”.

“He (Smith) has been a high-class player and has been a massive part of all formats for Australia, so no concern there. It is the adjustment factor, coming back to India after a series in South Africa, some guys are coming off a break,” Mitchell Starc said to the reporters.

Mitchell Starc is supposed to come back in the 3rd ODI match against India in Rajkot on Wednesday.

“I think we have seen the wickets change throughout both the games, depending on who batted first and in different places. Spin was a massive factor in the second innings the other night (in Indore). We played pretty well under lights in Mohali,” Starc said.

”We have a got a lot of guys with IPL experience, we know that the wickets are going to be very different through the night and day, depending on which part of India we play as well- not too many grounds we have played to back so, conditions are going to play a part,” Starc added.

Starc believes that the third ODI and the two subsequent warm-up matches will give them enough time to get ready for the tournament properly.

Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith admitted that the team needs to sort a few things out ahead of the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. His comments came after Australia suffered a crushing 99-run loss against India in the second ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday (September 24).

Australia were thoroughly outplayed by India in the second ODI. Having lost the first ODI, Australia needed to win the second game of the three-match series to keep the series alive. However, the visitors failed to come up with a good performance with either ball or bat.

Asked to bat first, India piled up a mammoth total of 399 for 5. Shubman Gill (104) and Shreyas Iyer (105) scored centuries while KL Rahul (52) and Suryakumar Yadav (72 off 37 balls with six fours and six sixes) scored fifties for the hosts. In reply, Australia were all out for just 217 runs while they were given a revised total of 317 runs in 33 overs after a rain break.

At one stage, the tourists were reeling at 140 for 8 before an explosive partnership of 77 runs between Sean Abbott (54 in 36 balls with four boundaries and five sixes) and Josh Hazlewood (23) helped Australia post a respectable score.

Steve Smith on consecutive losses:

At a time when teams like to hit top form, Australia have been performing poorly. With the World Cup less than two weeks away, the team from Down Under has lost five ODIs in a row. Earlier this month, they lost the last three games of the five-match ODI series against South Africa before losing the first two games of the ongoing series against India.

And Steve Smith is well aware of the issue faced by Australia. Steve Smith, who won the World Cup in 2015, admitted that his team has failed to peak at the right time for the World Cup. He also praised India for their performance and the win.

“When we came here it looked a good wicket, changed a little bit. Credit to India, they batted beautifully…400 was always a big challenge on that. I have seen games here before and it’s looked good for chasing. We were a fair way off,” Steve Smith said.

“We have lost quite a few in a row now…World Cups are about peaking at the right time, we certainly haven’t done that at this stage. A few things to sort out. We know we are a good side. Both teams are working towards the World Cup but still want to win games,” he added.

The third and final match of the series is scheduled to be played on Wednesday (September 27) in Rajkot.

Steve Smith

Ace Australian batter Steve Smith believes that the ongoing three-ODI series against India is an ideal preparation for the team ahead of the World Cup 2023. Steve Smith expressed satisfaction with his performance in the series opener and his recovery from a wrist injury.

Steve Smith returned to the team during the tour of India after missing the white-ball series against South Africa. The right-hand batter scored 41 runs off 60 deliveries during the first ODI in Mohali on Friday. However, he failed to convert his start into a big score.

It Was A Challenging Wicket At Mohali – Steve Smith

Speaking ahead of the start of the second ODI against India, Steve Smith emphasized the importance of adapting to different wicket conditions before the World Cup.

“It was a challenging wicket (at Mohali), but it was nice to spend a little bit of time in the middle. I am glad that my wrist is recovered, feeling good. Looking forward to everything that’s coming up,” Smith said.

“It (type of wicket) doesn’t bother me, just play what’s in front of you and with what’s coming up, there’s potential that we are going to play on some wickets like the one we had the other night. It’s good practice for me and the rest of the boys as well,” he added.

Smith is currently leading the team in the second ODI, as regular skipper Pat Cummins has opted out of the match. Cummins played in the first match in Mohali, where he picked up one wicket for 43 runs in his 10-over quota.

I Do Enjoy Batting At Three – Steve Smith

Steve Smith expressed his willingness to bat in various positions, but the number-three spot is ideal for him in ODIs. He acknowledged that Australian players, including himself, have gained experience in India through international matches and the IPL.

“I’ll bat wherever, I do enjoy batting at three, I’ve spent most of my career there in one-day cricket. That’s my favourite spot,” he further added.

(Playing in India) Most of the guys have played a lot of cricket here now whether it be for Australia or in the IPl. They’ve experienced the conditions a fair amount of time, there’s not too many surprises but it’s a wonderful place to play, that’s for sure.”

All-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis were rested for the second game and replaced by Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood. Left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson made his ODI debut at the Holkar Stadium on Sunday.

Watch - Mohammed Shami Castles Steve Smith With A Jaffa In Mohali

Mohammed Shami has been the man for India in the ongoing first ODI against Australia at Punjab Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. The pacer has been right on the money with the ball and has troubled Australia batters with his lines and lengths.

Mohammed Shami outshined Steve Smith with his staggering bowling and sent stumps flying. The pacer made the ball talk in the 22nd over of the game as he bowled a sharp delivery that nipped in. The batter didn’t read the ball at all as it took the inside edge to see the leg-stump clattering.

Steve Smith looked in great touch as he played some crisp shots and batted well. He scored 41 runs off 60 balls and looked set for a big score. However, thankfully for India Mohammed Shami produced a snorter to cut short his stay and send him packing.

Mohammed Shami provided India with a great start as he bowled magnificently well with the new ball. He bowled impeccable lines and lengths and removed dangerous Mitchell Marsh for just 4 runs in the very first over that he bowled. He has filled in the shoes of Mohammed Siraj well who has been down with fever.

With the wicket of Steve Smith, Australia lost three wickets. David Warner (52) so far has been the highest run-getter in the game. The visitors were reduced to 112/3.

Mohammed Shami should play without any doubt – Aakash Chopra

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra batted for Mohammed Shami to be the regular feature in the playing XI for India. He backed the pacer to play with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

“I feel Shami should play without any doubt. When you play on a very flat pitch, batting generally tends to cancel each other out. Both sides have good batting line-ups. You might not need the No. 9.

You will have [Ravichandran] Ashwin or [Washington] Sundar at No. 8. At least at No. 9, play a proper bowler. I am not saying that Shardul is not a proper bowler, but play Shami, Siraj, Bumrah – go with your three proper fast bowlers,” he concluded.

Ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, Australia star Steve Smith has given a promising update on his fitness. The right-handed batsman recently missed the tour of South Africa where Australia played three T20Is and five ODIs.

Steve Smith was named in both the white-ball squads but eventually missed both assignments due to an injury in his left wrist. He had suffered the injury during the second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s and it hampered his performance through the rest of the series. He scored a century at the Lord’s but failed to reach the triple-digit mark in any of the following three Tests.

There were fears that Steve Smith might not be at his best for the World Cup but the star batsman has given a very positive update ahead of the marquee event. Speaking ahead of the first ODI against India, the right-handed batsman said he feels “a million bucks” after batting for nearly two hours in a net session in Mohali.

“I faced Patty (Cummins) for a bit, felt good against him, faced quite a bit of spin and lots on the ‘wanger’, so it’s a good start,” Steve Smith said after his net session.

“I did lots of running, I was still able to do that when I had the brace on,” he told cricket.com. “I got the brace off, not much changed, had a little injection and feel a million bucks now. A few days after my needle I started to feel good. I was just wary with some catching stuff, landing, the I was taking it easy. But it feels good and I’m ready to go.”

Steve Smith on Pat Cummins:

Steve Smith also gave an update on Pat Cummins. Just like Steve Smith, Pat Cummins also missed the tour of South Africa due to a wrist injury he sustained during the Ashes. The Australia skipper is set to return to action in the forthcoming assignment against India. Talking about the fast bowler, Steve Smith said:

“He just had a little gallop, a trial run. He’s cruising into it and I’m sure he’ll be good for the first game.”

Australia ODI squad for India series: Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa
