  • Zaka Ashraf Likely To Get Extension As PCB Chief, Babar Azam Set To Be Sacked As Captain: Report

  • Zaka Ashraf is reportedly set to get an extension as the chief of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from the Pakistan government

Zaka Ashraf is reportedly set to get an extension as the chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from the Pakistan government despite the recent controversies. As per media reports, the caretaker government led by Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar is in no mood to replace the PCB chief.

In July this year, Zaka Ashraf was approved as head of the PCB by former Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif for a period of four months after Najam Sethi resigned from the position. The four months given to the present managing committee to hold elections for a new board of governors and a new chairman will expire on November 5.

The Pakistan PM is the chief patron of PCB and has the authority to give an extension through the ministry of inter-provincial coordination ministry. As per reports, he has decided to extend Zaka Ashraf’s stay as the PCB chairman. According to a report in the PTI, the PM recently met former allrounder Shahid Afridi and urged him to work with the current managing committee.

“The caretaker PM wanted Shahid to contribute to Pakistan cricket and work with the existing set-up but the all-rounder conveyed his reservations about working with the current managing committee,” one source told the news outlet.

The report further quoted another source as saying that the current PCB boss had been using his political and business connections to get an extension. He has reportedly asked for more time to make decisions since all the major decisions about the Pakistan team were taken by his predecessor Sethi.

“Zaka has told the powers that be that he couldn’t make any changes or take strong decisions because of the Asia Cup and World Cup for which selections and appointments were already made by Sethi,” he said.

Zaka Ashraf likely to appoint new captain:

The report also stated that Pakistan are likely to have a new captain in place if Zaka Ashraf’s extension is confirmed. The PM will take a decision on the extension in the next 24 hours.

Recently media reports stated that former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to replace under-fire Babar Azam as the Test captain ahead of the tour of Australia.

The current PCB chief recently found himself in a big controversy after former wicketkeeper Rashid Latif claimed that he was not responding to Babar Azam’s messages and calls.
