Babar Azam has insisted he is under no pressure of captaincy as he faces the heat for his performance as the leader of the Pakistan team in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Following Pakistan’s poor run in the competition, speculations are rife that the star batsman might get sacked as the captain as soon as the tournament ends. Pakistan began their campaign in the World Cup with a couple of wins before their campaign got derailed. They suffered four defeats in a row including a first-ever ODI defeat against Afghanistan.

The Men in Green managed to end their losing streak by winning the following two games, but the criticism of the captain has not subsided. Despite being Bangladesh and New Zealand in their last two games, Pakistan are on the verge of getting knocked out of the World Cup. While they can finish level on points with fourth-placed New Zealand, their poor net run-rate is likely to result in them finishing below the Black Caps in the points table.

Babar Azam on captaincy:

With Pakistan underperforming in the World Cup, Babar Azam has been facing the heat. There have been calls from several quarters to sack the star batsman as the captain of the side. Several media reports also suggest that he is likely to be sacked as the captain as soon as he lands in Pakistan. Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to replace him as the Test captain ahead of the forthcoming Australia tour.

And while only time will reveal Babar Azam’s fate, the Pakistan captain is not bothered at all by the reports and rumors. Speaking ahead of Pakistan’s last league game in the World Cup, the right-handed batsman said that he never really felt the pressure of captaincy and that he is only focused on the upcoming game for now.

“I am a captain of Pakistan since last three years. I never felt pressure of captaincy. There is no pressure of captaincy on me. People are talking about my captaincy but I have not given below average performance in World Cup,” Babar Azam told the media.

“PCB will discuss regarding my captaincy once World Cup ends and we go back to Pakistan because for now I am only focused on the remaining league match in this World Cup,” he added.
