The 38-year-old Netherlands National Cricket Team bowling all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe stunned the India National Cricket Team modern-day batting great Virat Kohli by rattling his stumps in the 45th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday, November 12, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Kohli has been in terrific form in the ongoing edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. The batting maestro has delivered match-winning performances and has now become the leading run-getter in the competition.

Overall, in 9 matches, Virat Kohli has scored 594 runs at an astonishing average of 99 and a strike rate of 88.52, with 2 centuries and 5 fifties.

Virat Kohli completed his half-century off 53 balls against the Dutch and looked set for his historic 50th ODI ton, having equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons in the previous match against South Africa.

However, he was cleaned up for 51 by the veteran Netherlands National Cricket Team spinner Roelof van der Merwe. Merwe bowled a length ball that pitched outside off-stump and it didn’t turn. Kohli tried to cut it away, but the ball sneaked under his bat and destroyed the off-stump.

Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma was present in the stands and she looked quite disappointed after the batter’s dismissal. Also, the entire Chinnaswamy was left silenced following the dismissal of Virat Kohli.

India won the toss and opted to bat first. The opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill quickly started the fireworks against the Dutch on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.

They played an attacking brand of cricket and helped the team reach 50 runs in 6 overs and 91 runs in 10 overs. This was the highest first powerplay total conceded by the Netherlands in the ongoing edition of the World Cup. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill smashed excellent half-centuries but weren’t able to convert them into big scores, getting dismissed for 61 and 51 runs respectively.
