With just one game remaining in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the fans have started predicting the players who could be adjudged the Player of the Tournament. Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has also shared his views on the same.

A number of players will be in contention to win the prestigious award. India’s Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami will be two of the leading contenders for the top award. Virat Kohli is currently the leading run-scorer in the competition. He has scored 711 runs in 10 games so far and has already broken Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in a single edition of the World Cup.

The former India captain has also scored three centuries and five half-centuries in 10 innings. On the other hand, Shami is the leading wicket-taker in the competition despite not playing the first four games. In 6 games, the right-arm pacer has picked up a staggering 23 wickets with the help of 3 five-wicket hauls including a 7-wicket haul against New Zealand in the semifinal.

Dinesh Karthik’s pick for the Player of the Tournament award:

While the likes of Kohli and Shami are leading the run-scorers and wicket-takers charts respectively, Dinesh Karthik believes Rohit Sharma should bag the Player of the Tournament award ahead of others. The veteran wicketkeeper was responding to a fan’s message and agreed to his suggestion that the India captain should get the prestigious award for his batting and leadership.

Rohit has earned praise from all quarters for the way he has batted selflessly in the competition as well as his captaincy. He has scored 550 runs in 10 games at an average of 55 and a strike rate of almost 125. He has led India to win in all ten games so far and is just one win away from becoming the only third Indian captain to win the World Cup.

Even in the 2019 World Cup, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was adjudged the Player of the Tournament for his captaincy as well as his batting. In that edition, Rohit Sharma was the leading run-scorer while Mitchell Starc was the leading wicket-taker.
