Veteran spinner Imran Tahir, on Sunday (September 24), led Guyana Amazon Warriors to their first-ever title in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). And they could not have asked for a better opponent to beat in the title decider.

The Guyana-based outfit thrashed Trinbago Knight Riders, the most successful side in the history of CPL, to win their maiden title. Guyana Amazon Warriors had finished on the wrong side of the result in the final on five occasions before finally getting it right this time. They thoroughly outplayed their fancied opponents to clinch the title.

Captain Imran Tahir won the toss and elected to bowl first. His decision was totally justified by his teammates as Guyana Amazon Warriors bowled out the Knight Riders for a paltry total of 94 runs. Only three batters could reach double digits for the Knight Riders during the disastrous display with the bat.

For Guyana, Dwaine Pretorius picked up 4 wickets while Imran Tahir and Gudakesh Motie picked up two each. With the bat, the Guyana Amazon Warriors chased down the total in 14 overs by losing just 1 wicket. Saim Ayub scored an unbeaten fifty to lead his team’s charge with the bat.

Imran Tahir gets emotional:

Imran Tahir became emotional after leading Guyana Amazon Warriors to the historic title. Speaking at the end of the game, a visibly emotional 44-year-old Imran Tahir began by stating how he was motivated after jokes were made on his appointment as the captain of the sided. He also thanked Ravichandran Ashwin for his motivating words before the competition.

“Beautiful (feeling). Great experience to play for this beautiful franchise and people who always support us. Everyone were sending jokes that I became captain. That actually motivated me, I wanna say thanks to those people,” said Imran Tahir.

“Thanks to our analyst Prasanna. He worked almost 20 hours a day to give us plans. Also want to thank R Ashwin from India. Before the tournament he said our team will do it. Thank you to our owners for checking on everything we need… If I told you this is one of the great achievements I have had in my life.

“The players made my job easier, their families. I am happy that I am the first captain to achieve this for Guyana. We were more hungry than ever before. Team belief was there.

“I told the team we have been the best team in the competition and if we play the way we have played to our potential we will win. Since I arrived it was my dream (to win the title. Pauses for a moment as he gets emotional). I’m grateful for this support. Love you all,” he added.

CPL 2023: Watch Umpire Does John Cena's "You Can't See Me" Gesture To Imram Tahir Apperal In Qualifier 1

Umpire Nigel Duguid did WWE Star John Cena’s iconic “You Can’t See Me” gesture in the first qualifier of CPL 2023 to take the internet by storm. His gesture became instantly viral on social media with the video making the rounds on X.

In the first qualifier between Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors, umpire Duguid did the famous gesture to an appeal from Imran Tahir.

Tahir on the very first delivery of his spell trapped Deyal in front of the wicket. His appeal was turned down by the umpire who told him that he was unsighted off the delivery as Tahir came in his way.

Watch – Umpire’s You Can’t See Me Gesture In CPL 2023 Qualifier 1

Tahir who himself was the captain of the Amazon Warriors in this CPL season decided to take the review and the umpire had to finally rule the decision in favor of the bowler. Despite Tahir’s economical spell, Guyana lost the game and were knocked out of the tournament.

Talking about Qualifier 1, Guyana Amazon Warriors scored 166/7 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat first by TKR. Saim Ayub top scored with 49. Azam Khan (36), Dwayne Pretorius (15), and Romario Shepherd (15) were the other key contributors.

TKR chased down the score inside 18.1 overs with Chadwick Walton scoring an unbeaten 80 opening the batting. Nicholas Pooran (33), and Kieron Pollard (23) played their part in the chase as well as the Knight Riders cantered their way through to another CPL final.

” Proper planning. Credit to the back room staff. The way we planned and executed was superb. I don’t want to single out anybody. We gave guys chances in the last game we played here. The bowling unit delivered entirely. The message was simple to the batters. We knew they were 20-25 runs short. Walton got an opportunity after Guptill’s absence and scored a crucial knock. Would be interesting to see who we play in the finals,” said TKR captain Kieron Pollard after TKR reached the finals.

Ambati Rayudu‘s stint in the league ended after only three matches. The organizers stated that he pulled out of the tournament due to ‘personal reasons’. However, Rayudu took to his official X handle (formerly known as Twitter) to provide clarification about leaving the franchise.

“I have agreed to play in the cpl only till the 28 th of August as I have had prior commitments.. so as stated in the media I have not pulled out but finished my agreement.. thank you @CPL and @sknpatriots,” Ambati Rayudu wrote.

Ambati Rayudu To Play In T20 Leagues Across The World

The 37-year-old announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in India after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 final. The Andhra batter played a crucial knock in the final to help the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinch the fifth title in the history of the tournament.

The former CSK batter managed only 47 runs in three innings during CPL 2023, averaging 15.66 with a strike rate of 117.50. The batter registered a golden duck on his league debut, followed by scoring 32 runs off 24 deliveries against the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the next match.

Ambati Rayudu will represent the MI Emirates in the International League T20 (ILT20) in 2024, as the franchise named him as one of the eight new players signed. He is set to join the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) franchise in the upcoming edition of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) SA20 league.

Ambati Rayudu

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star batsman, Ambati Rayudu decided to end his contract with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SNP) in the mid-Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 season due to personal reasons.

Ambati Rayudu played only three matches for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 2023 season of the Caribbean Premier League and scored 47 runs with a strike rate of 117.50.

The Indian batsman, Rayudu signed for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots as their marquee player and became the second Indian to take part in the Caribbean Premier League after Pravin Tambe.

Ambati Rayudu retired from international and Indian domestic cricket earlier in 2023. He also played an active role in helping Chennai Super Kings (CSK) win their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

Not just Ambati Rayudu but Blessing Muzarabani too left CPL 2023 for personal reasons

It is not Rayudu, but Blessing Muzarabani, a Zimbabwean pacer also terminated his contract with the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots franchise for personal reasons.

In the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Muzarabani took part in three matches for his side and managed to take only one wicket with an economy rate of 10.61. Benny Howell and Will Smeed have been called by the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to replace them.

In the CPL 2023, the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are the only side who have failed to clinch a single win in the tournament after playing six matches. Patriots’ first two matches were canceled by the authority due to heavy rain and lost the next four games.

On the other hand, the Barbados Royal have called Carlos Brathwaite as their temporary replacement for their wicketkeeper-batter Donovan Ferreira who also failed to continue. Donovan Ferreira has been included in South Africa’s 16-member for the ongoing three-match T20I series against Australia for which he had to leave the league.

Donovan Ferreira took part in only one match in the ongoing CPL 2023 and scored just 19 runs. Carlos Brathwaite played 77 CPL matches for four franchises and will play for Barbados Royals for the first time. Brathwaite scored 822 runs in the Caribbean Premier League and picked 59 wickets. He last played in the CPL in 2021 and will make his return to the league for the Royals.

Ambati Rayudu last played for India in 2019 against Australia, after that, he took his retirement from international cricket.

Kieron Pollard, on Monday (August 28), led his team Trinbago Knight Riders to their first win of the ongoing season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The Knight Riders’ first game of CPL 2023 was washed out before they suffered a heavy 54-run loss against St Lucia Kings in their second game.

But on Monday, the Kieron Pollard-led side registered an impressive 6-wicket win over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots to open their account in CPL 2023. Asked to bat first, the Patriots rode on their skipper Sherfane Rutherford’s unbeaten fifty to score a competitive total of 178/5 in the allotted 20 overs.

The Patriots were reeling at 86 for 4 in the 12th over before Rutherford’s fine knock helped them recover and post a big total. The Patriots skipper scored an unbeaten 62 off 38 balls with the help of 4 fours and 5 sixes. For the Knight Riders, veteran spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers. The 35-year-old picked up 3 wickets for 24 runs off his 4 overs.

In reply, the Knight Riders chased down the total in just 17.1 overs thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s fifty and whirlwind unbeaten cameos from Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell. Pooran scored 61 off 32 balls to lay the foundation for the chase before Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell took the team home. The Knight Riders skipper smashed 37 off just 16 balls while Russell scored 23 off just 8 balls.

Kieron Pollard angry:

While Kieron Pollard led his team to the first win of the tournament, he was not entirely happy and the reason was the red card his team received for slow over-rate. History was created in the game as the Knight Riders became the first team in the CPL to receive a red card.

As per the rules, the bowling teams will have to send one fielder outside the field if they fail to start the final over in time. The Knight Riders failed to maintain the over-rate and were shown a red card by the umpire. Kieron Pollard had then no option but to send one fielder off the field and he chose Sunil Narine who had already completed his overs.

With just two fielders outside the circle in the final over, Dwayne Bravo ended up conceding 18 runs. Fortunately for the Knight Riders, they managed to win the game. However, Kieron Pollard was not at all happy with how things had unfolded.

“To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done,” Pollard said after the game. “We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalized for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous.”

Sunil Narine, CPL, T20 Cricket

Sunil Narine, on Monday (August 28), became the first player in the history of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) to be shown a red card. In a desperate effort to combat poor over-rates issues in the game, the CPL introduced new playing conditions for this year’s CPL and WCPL.

According to the new rules, the teams need to finish the 17th over by 72 minutes 15 seconds. If they do not, fielding sides will be forced to bring a fifth fielder inside the 30-yard circle. Another delayed over would need them to bring a sixth fielder inside the circle.

And the most interesting penalty for the over-rate issue was for the failure to start the final over in time. In case, the bowling team fails to finish the 19th over by 80 minutes 45 seconds, one player must go off the field. As a result, the bowling team will have to bowl the crucial final over with just fielders outside the circle.

And Trinbago Knight Riders faced the penalty against the Patriots. Sunil Narine had to walk off the field after the umpire showed the Knight Riders the red card for failure to complete the 19th over in time. As a result, Dwayne Bravo had to bowl the final over with just 2 fielders outside the circle and Sherfane Rutherford made the most of it as he collected 18 runs from the over.

Watch the incident:

Trinbago Knight Riders win the game:

Fortunately for the Knight Riders, the red card and conceding 18 runs in the final over did not cost them the game. Asked to bat first, the Patriots scored 178 for 5 in the allotted 20 overs. Skipper Rutherford was the top-scorer for his side, smashing an unbeaten 62 off 38 balls with the help of 5 fours and 4 sixes. For the Knight Riders, Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 24 off his 4 overs.

With the bat, the Knight Riders chased down the target in just 17.1 overs thanks to a blazing fifty from Nicholas Pooran. The hard-hitting batsman scored 61 runs off just 32 balls with 4 sixes and 5 fours. Captain Kieron Pollard also played a fine unbeaten cameo of 37 runs from just 16 balls while hard-hitting allrounder Andre Russell played an unbeaten knock of 23 off 8 balls with 2 sixes and 2 fours.

Rahkeem Cornwall's Run Out

Rahkeem Cornwall is definitely not the fittest of the cricketers and it was proven once again on Friday (August 18) during the second match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023. The West Indies all-rounder is plying his trade for Barbados Royals in the ongoing CPL season and has started his campaign in a disastrous fashion.

Rahkeem Cornwall was run-out for a first-ball duck as Saint Lucia Kings inflicted a heavy 54-run defeat on the Barbados-based outfit. Saint Lucia Kings, who had started their campaign with a loss, bounced back in style to register a comprehensive win over the Royals.

Batting first, the Saint Lucia-based outfit posted a big total of 201/6 in the allotted 20 overs. Openers Johnson Charles and Faf du Plessis gave the team a good start by adding 61 runs for the first wicket. Healthy contributions from Johnson (30), Du Plessis (47), and Sean Williams (47) propelled the Kings to a competitive total of 201 runs.

Rahkeem Cornwall’s bizarre run-out:

Set a target of 202 runs, Barbados Royals needed a good start with the bat. Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers came out to open the innings for the team. Both the players are known for their hard-hitting skills with the bat and the team must have expected them to deliver. However, Barbados Royals’ innings got off to a terrible start as Rahkeem Cornwall was out on the very first ball of the chase in a bizarre manner.

The West Indies cricketer hit the ball towards the short leg where Chris Sole was standing. The fielder failed to grab the ball at first and the batsmen decided to steal a single. Kyle Mayers wanted a run and Rahkeem Cornwall duly obliged. The opener, however, had no intention of completing the run as he never tried to run quickly.

In the meantime, Sole collected the ball and hit the wicket from a short leg to catch Rahkeem Cornwall well short of the crease. Even the commentators were heard laughing at the comical run-out.

Watch Rahkeem Cornwall’s run-out:

Barbados Royals were all out for 147 in 20 overs. They were reeling at 46 for 5 inside the powerplay and even the 100-run mark was looking like a distant dream after they were reduced to 89 for 8. However, a 48-run knock from Nyeem Young helped them post a respectable total.

Caribbean Premier League

New rules are set to be imposed in the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in both men’s and women’s tournaments to combat slow over-rates.

In the T20 league, the third umpire will keep a check on the time and will tell the over-rate status to the players at every stage of the match through the field umpires and on the big screen in the stadium.

The bowling team will get a few relaxations in the over rate rule like when there is DRS, injuries, and when the batsmen waste time on purpose.

The last four overs in the Caribbean Premier League will be closely monitored by the umpires. Also, 85 minutes is the given time by the authorities to complete the 20 overs.

As per the news, the 17th over of each innings needs to be finished by 72 minutes and 15 seconds, if failed then one fielder must enter the 30-yard circle.

The 18th over should be finished by 76 minutes and 30 seconds if the team fails then two more fielders will be taken inside the 30-yard circle.

The 19th over of each innings needs to be ended by 80 minutes and 45 seconds if the team concedes the time limit then one fielder will be shown a red card and will be eliminated from the field before the start of the 20th over. According to the new rules, the fielding captain can choose which player needs to be eliminated.

We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer – Caribbean Premier League Operations Director

While speaking in a press conference, the Tournament Operations Director of the Caribbean Premier League, Michael Hall, said that they are sad to see the new trend of slow over-rates in the 20-over format and to keep a check on it new rules have been imposed.

“We have been disappointed that our T20 games have been getting longer and longer each year, and we want to do what we can to arrest this trend. It is the duty of those involved in cricket to ensure that the game keeps moving and we have sensitized both the franchises and our match officials to this duty ahead of the tournament. Our hope is that these in-game penalties are not needed, but we believe they are proportionate and necessary,” he said.

The Caribbean Premier League 2023 will have six teams, St Lucia Kings, Barbados Royals, Trinbago Knight Riders, Amazon Warriors, SKN Patriots, and Jamaica Tallawahs. The tournament will kick off on Thursday (August 17) and the final match will be held on September 25th.

Ambati Rayudu

In what has been the latest development as per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that Ambati Rayudu might be joining Joburg Super Kings for the second edition of the SA20. This comes after the former Indian batter joined St Kitts & Nevis Patriots for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season.

Ambati Rayudu was also slated to play in the Major League Cricket (MLC) for Texas Super Kings but he pulled out of the tournament after citing personal reasons. The right-hander is now being convinced by the Chennai Super Kings owners, who own the Joburg Super Kings as well, to play in the second edition of the SA20.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan also talked about the possibility of Ambati Rayudu joining the Joburg Super Kings. He said that the discussions with skipper Faf du Plessis and head coach Stephen Fleming are underway and the former Indian batter might be on the board.

Ambati Rayudu became available to play in overseas leagues after he announced his retirement from Indian cricket after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, which he won with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Notably, BCCI doesn’t allow its players to take part in foreign leagues until they retire from all forms of cricket.

SAT20: “Ambati’s extensive experience…,” Mahesh Ramani, chairman of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on Ambati Rayudu’s selection

Ambati Rayudu will be part of the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in CPL. He will replace Tristan Stubbs in the team. While talking about his signing, Mahesh Ramani, chairman of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, said:

“I’m pleased to inform Patriots fans that Ambati Rayudu has been signed as one of our overseas players for the 2023 season. Ambati’s extensive experience, having won multiple championships with various teams during his illustrious career in India, will undoubtedly enhance the development of our young players as we aim for our second CPL title in 2023.”

Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 will be played from August 16 to September 24.

Former India batsman Ambati Rayudu is all set to become the second Indian player to play in the men’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The right-handed batsman will be plying his trade for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the tournament after the franchise signed him as their marquee player for the upcoming season.

The 37-year-old announced his retirement from international and Indian cricket after helping Chennai Super Kings win the Indian Premier League in May this year. The BCCI does not let active players to participate in overseas T20 leagues but retired players can play in those competitions.

However, recent reports suggested that the Indian cricket board is likely to introduce a one-year cooling-off period for retired Indian players before they can participate in overseas franchise leagues. It could be one of the reasons why Ambati Rayudu pulled out of the Major League Cricket after signing up for Texas Super Kings. While the BCCI has not introduced the policy yet, it would be interesting to see whether Ambati Rayudu gets to play in the CPL or not.

Ambati Rayudu to become second Indian player in CPL:

If Ambati Rayudu gets the green light from the BCCI to play in the CPL, he will be the second Indian player and definitely the most high-profile name from the country to play in the tournament. Before him, leg-spinner Pravin Tambe had played in the CPL in 2020.

“I’m really excited to be joining the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. I look forward to having a positive contribution for the team in the upcoming CPL 2023,” Rayudu said.

Ambati Rayudu’s addition will be a big boost for the Patriots who have lost the services of star allrounder Dwayne Bravo after the latter returned to his home franchise TKR. The veteran batsman has ample experience in T20 cricket.

He played in the IPL from 2010 and 2023 and remained one of the biggest names in the tournament throughout. During his illustrious IPL career, Ambati Rayudu scored 4348 runs in 204 matches with the help of 1 century and 22 fifties. He has also won six IPL titles.

“I am sure Ambati’s seasoned expertise of having won multiple championships with various teams in an illustrious career in India will undoubtedly enrich the experience of our young players as we chase our second CPL title in 2023,” said Patriots owner Mahesh Ramani.

Meanwhile, CPL 2023 will be played from August 16 to September 24. The Patriots will open their campaign against TKR on August 19 in St Lucia.

Azam Khan is the only Pakistan player included in the inaugural International League T20 (ILT20) and the Desert Vipers signed him. However, the PCB has not given him permission to play in the league. The right-handed batsman has not got the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board and he will not be able to play in the league.

The Desert Vipers, the league’s only non-Indian owned franchise, signed him. Azam Khan will be the only Pakistani player to participate in the tournament, but as per reports, the 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has not received the NOC to participate in the league, which starts early next year.

Pakistani players are not playing in the South African league as the owners are Indians. Given the ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, the situation is difficult for Pakistani players.

Azam Khan, the son of former Pakistan great wicketkeeper Moin Khan, was signed directly to the Vipers franchise, which is coached by Tom Moody, and this created a perception that more Pakistan players would be attracted to the Lancer Capitals-owned team. It was also believed that the Vipers team would be full of Pakistani players, but as per recent developments, that scenario will not be on the cards. Other franchise owners come from India.

International League T20 (ILT20)

ILT20 is a professional franchise-based T20 format cricket tournament in which six franchise teams compete in a 34-match event with 84 international and 24 UAE-based players. The six franchises include Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (Kolkata Knight Riders), Desert Vipers (Lancer Capital), Dubai Capitals (GMR), Gulf Giants (Adani Sportsline), MI Emirates (Reliance Industries), and Sharjah Warriors (Capri Global).

Azam Azam skipped the National T20 Cup to play in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) earlier this year for the Barbados Royals. He was initially denied an NOC to travel to the West Indies but later received it. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) prefers players who play on the domestic circuit. Azam does not have a central contract with the national team, although he played three Twenty20 Internationals last year.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has got an extended two-and-a-half-month window in the latest ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), as per a report in the ESPNcricinfo.

The ESPNcricinfo accessed a near-final draft of the latest ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), which lays out the international cricket due to be played by the 12 Full Members in the 2023-27 cycle. The latest ICC FTP consists of two ICC World Test Championship cycles, a host of ICC events and several bilateral series.

Meanwhile, in the latest FTP draft, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has got an extended two-and-a-half-month window as very few International games will be played during that period. Earlier, IPL had a near-official window from the last week of March to the first week of June but there has been a 2-week expansion to the window in the latest FTP draft.

“We are in discussions with the ICC (International Cricket Council) and several other cricket boards to have an exclusive window for the IPL,” Shah had earlier said.

“Let me assure you that there will be a two-and-a-half-month window in the next ICC FTP (Future Tours Programme) calendar so that all top international players can participate. Since this tournament benefits all … we have received a positive response from the ICC and other member boards,” Shah added.

Meanwhile, the Indian Premier League became a 10-team tournament with the addition of two new teams and now 74 games are being played in the marquee tournament. The number of matches per season is expected to be increased. 74 games will be played in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In the 2025 and 2026 seasons, 84 games are expected to be played and in the 2027 season, a maximum of 94 matches are expected to be played.

The Hundred, BBL Build In Dedicated Windows Just Like IPL

As per the same report, the England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket Australia, have built-in smaller windows during their home seasons for their white-ball competitions, the Hundred and the BBL.

In the latest FTP draft, a three-week window across July and August is clear of any international cricket to allow England players to take part in the Hundred. Notably, several major names like Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Jos Buttler missed out on the first edition of the white-ball tournament due to international fixtures.

Similarly, Cricket Australia has kept January clear of white-ball international games to allow their players to take part in the BBL. Also, CPL and BPL have made space for their leagues.

CSA is set to launch its franchise T20 league in 2023 and South Africa have even pulled out of the Australia white-ball series so that the players can participate in the white-ball competition. In the new FTP, CSA has a window clear of international cricket in January 2025 and January 2026. There is a possibility that South Africa’s T20 league could clash with the UAE’s T20 league, which is expected to take place in January-February.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has also left windows open for the PSL, which is set to be played in February-March (2023), January-February (2024) and December-January (2026-27).

The ESPNcricinfo report further state that the “number of tours in this draft of the FTP are red-circled” which indicates that things have not been fully finalized as of now. Also, after the AGM of the ICC on July 25 and 26 in Birmingham, the final draft is expected to be published.

The rules of the tournament are very different as the batting teams will only have six wickets rather than 10 wickets. Also, the mandatory powerplay will be of two overs and the batting team can also unlock a floating third-over powerplay by smashing two sixes in the initial two overs.

The 30 balls will be thrown from one end, while the remaining 30 balls will be thrown from the other end. Also, a fielder will be removed for the last six balls if the bowling team fail to complete 10 overs in 45 minutes. Meanwhile, fans can also vote for a mystery-free hit, on which the batsman will not be out.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan urged the Indian cricket board to allow their players to participate in different T20 leagues around the globe.

Since the emergence of the Indian Premier League, the brainchild of the then vice-president of BCCI  Lalit Modi, in 2008, many countries planned to start their own T20 leagues.

As of now for a fringe player, who cannot meet the requirement to play for his national team in bilateral series, will be seen playing various T20 leagues across the globe.

Unlike IPL, not every league has the provision to play too many foreign players in one team because they prioritise to play as many national players as they can.

In IPL, one team can play not more than four overseas players, whereas, in Australia’s Big Bash League, the restriction goes down to two players.

But however, the entry of the Indian players in these overseas T20 leagues is complicated because of the strict clause imposed by the BCCI.

India should take a leaf out of all other countries: Michael Vaughan

If an Indian player wants to play in overseas T20 franchise tournaments, he will have to declare his retirement from international cricket and cannot participate in domestic competitions and IPL.

Vaughan wants the Indian players to play in other T20 leagues in order to gain exposure and experience.

India should take a leaf out of all other countries … Allow their players to play in other leagues around the World to gain experience … #India #T20WorldCup,” Vaughan tweeted.

Yuvraj Singh and Manpreet Gony participated in Global T20 League

Yuvraj Singh and Manpreet Gony were the first Indian players to play in Canada’s Global T20 League in 2019 as they played for Toronto Nationals.

Mumbai leg-spinner Pravin Tambe featured for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the Caribbean Premier League in 2020.

Kolkata Knight Riders also bought him in IPL 2020 auction, but because of his participation in CPL, Tambe could not play in IPL and hence was roped in as a coach by the franchise.

West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard reached the 11,000-run mark in T20’s to become only the second player after teammate Chris Gayle to achieve the feat. He crossed the barrier during his knock of 41 for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2021).

It comes as no surprise that Gayle tops the list of the highest run-scorers in the T20 format, with a staggering 14,108 runs across the international stage and different leagues around the world. Pollard has now passed the 11k mark, and the third spot is occupied by 39-year-old Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle (Image Credit: Twitter)

Kieron Pollard breached the barrier in 554 T20’s, with a high score of 104. He averages 31.72, which happens to be his best across formats. He has a healthy strike rate of 152.74 and is one of those rare batsmen who have struck more sixes than fours (741 sixes, 699 fours).

The burly West Indian is no slouch with the ball in hand either. A specialist wicket-taker when playing for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, Pollard has snared 297 wickets at an economy of 8.20 in T20s. His stats are almost unmatched in the shortest format, arguably making him the greatest all-rounder in T20s.

Trinbago Knight Riders beat St. Lucia Kings on the back of Kieron Pollard’s blazing knock

Batting first, Trinbago was struggling at 68/4 when Pollard joined hands with Tim Seifert in the middle. Things were looking bleak as batting wasn’t easy. Initially, Pollard struggled to find the middle of the bat and the team was moving towards a sub-par total.

However, all it needed for him to loosen up were a couple of boundaries that set him on his way. Seifert played a great role in supporting before taking off himself, and the duo stitched a 78-run partnership which took the game away from the Kings.

A target of 159 wasn’t going to be easy on a pacy and bouncy track. Apart from Andre Fletcher, none of the batsmen got going and Lucia Kings eventually lost the game by 27 runs. For his blazing knock of 41, Pollard was awarded the man of the match.

Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will start the usage of ‘smart balls’ for its matches from this season onwards. The ball was brought forth by a sports technology company called Sportcor in collaboration with Kookaburra.

The smart ball is basically what its name suggests, quite different from the traditional ones that are in play currently. It has an electronic chip embedded inside it, which is loaded with sensors that can transmit data.

The information that it returns can be viewed on electronic devices like the smartwatch, tablets, mobile phones, computers, and laptops. To access the data, a specifically designed app for this purpose has been introduced.

Trinbago-Knight-Riders, Smart Ball
Smart Ball will be used in the Caribbean Premier League (Image Source: Twitter)

With the help of the data, studies can be conducted to determine rising talent at most levels. The stats can also be used in real-time broadcasting, which helps the analysts to put their points across.

The smart ball has been tested before implementation and the results show that it behaves very similar to the traditional ball. The looks are the same and the weight of the ball hasn’t changed despite the chip inside.

Special Features of the Smart Ball

1) Pre-Bounce Speed (km/h) – Speed just before the ball bounces

2) Post-Bounce Speed (km/h) – Speed of the ball just after it bounces

3) Release Spin (RPM) – Revolutions on the ball at the point the bowler releases it

4) Post-Bounce Spin (RPM) – Revolutions after the bounce

5) Power (Watts) – Amount of power/effort the bowler puts into the ball

Sportcor chairman Michael Kasprowicz’s insight into the Smart Ball

Former Australia pacer Michael Kasprowicz, who is the current chairman and co-founder of Sportcor, revealed that the tests were conducted without the knowledge of the players who didn’t find anything odd.

Michael Kasprowicz
Sportcor chairman Michael Kasprowicz. (Image Credit: Twitter)

So we went through it and had it third-party verified. The ball’s been used in a blind test in Australian cricket in a Marsh Cup 50-over match where the balls were used in the match just to have a look and see if there was any reaction from the players. And there was none. So we’ve had everything verified and measured. All we’ve done is replace the cork rubber compound. It’s in the center of the cricket ball. And matched it perfectly,” he stated.

This will be the first instance of the Smart Ball being used in a professional league.

Guyana, led brilliantly by Nicholas Pooran, pulled off an amazing victory by beating the Knight Riders after successfully defending a target of 143 versus the defending champions.

However, the opening day of CPL 2021 was a double-header and saw Dwayne Bravo’s St Kitts and Nevis Patriots facing off against Barbados Royals captained by Jason Holder. Everyone was anticipating a great match between these two sides, especially with all eyes on one and only Universe Boss- Chris Gayle, who was making his comeback to the tournament.

Chris Gayle Gives An Amazing Moment On Opening Day Of CPL 2021; Shatters Window With A Six

The Dwayne Bravo-led team batted first after losing the toss. This gave the fans and people watching at home a chance to watch Chris Gayle in action early. Mohammad Amir and Oshane Thomas ensured Gayle walked in early by removing the openers Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas for 19 runs on the board.

Gayle had skipped the last season of the CPL, but there was lots of buzz on his return to the tournament. However, he just managed to make 12 runs in 9 balls with one six and one four before being castled by Oshane Thomas.

However, in his short stay, he did ensure that he hogs his fair share of the limelight.

In reply, Barbados managed just 154/7 as Sheldon Cottrell and Dominic Drakes picked two wickets each and Shai Hope top-scored with 44 in 38 balls.

Du Plessis has announced his retirement from tests after expressing his desire to concentrate more on limited-overs cricket but it still remains to be seen if he will be named in the South Africa T20I side.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the tweaked dates of the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2021) tournament, after lengthy discussions with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI requested the CWI to change the dates of the tournament so that West Indies players could play in the second half of the IPL 2021 in UAE.

MS Dhoni, IPL 2018 Trophy

Being a T20 captain is a tough job for any player. Since T20 games only consist of 20 overs per side, batsmen have to score runs at the best strike rate possible while bowlers have only 4 maximum overs each to come up with their best bowling show. As a result, a captain has to make the best decisions in the batting and fielding department to win a T20 match. This also results in close competition between the teams during T20 games.

Over the years, the craze of T20 cricket has reached sky-high among fans. Due to this, many franchise T20 leagues in many countries have gained wide popularity. Indian Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash League, Afghanistan Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, and Pakistan Super League are popular T20 leagues played every year around the world.

Along with international T20I bilateral series and ICC T20I tournaments, these T20 leagues also attract a lot of viewership. Here we take a look at the 4 players with the most wins as T20 captain.

Ranking All Flagship T20 Leagues Around The World

The landscape of the cricket world has completely changed in the past 13-14 years with the proliferation of franchise-based T2o tournaments.

It all started with the BCCI launching the Indian Premier League in 2007 and following its unprecedented success, cricket boards around the world have come up with their T20 leagues.

So, how do these leagues fare in comparison?

On that note, let us Rank All Flagship T20 Leagues Around The World:

6. Bangladesh Premier League

BPL (Image Credits: Getty)

With T20 leagues like the IPL capturing the imagination of the cricketing folklore, Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to kickstart their own T20 league in 2012.

However, the league soon found itself in a raging match-fixing controversy and the owners of all the six franchises were suspended by the BCB due to constant violations of the league regulations and delays in players’ salaries.

A number of players including former Bangladesh superstar Mohammad Ashraful and officials were also handed bans and the league did not take place in 2014.

The league returned in 2015 with six new franchises. In 2016/17, Sylhet Super Stars was suspended due to disciplinary violations, and two new teams- Khulna Titans and Rajshahi Kings- were added.

Following constant league regulation violations, the BCB decided to suspend all the franchises and took over the charge and renamed the league as Bangabandhu T20 league.

Constant disciplinary, match-fixing, and the lack of presence of overseas stars have meant that the BPL has never really taken off to capture the imagination of the cricket world.

One of the hottest commodities in T20 leagues, the former Bangladeshi captain will be seen playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL 2021. He returns to the franchise for which he has previously played in 2016 and 2017 before moving to Barbados Tridents in 2019 and winning the title with them.

Last year, the Caribbean Premier League was hosted in its entirety by Trinidad & Tobago.

The franchise-based T20 League’s Chief Operating Officer Pete Russell expressed his gratitude towards Cricket West Indies for assisting them in creating the window for the tournament.

He also thanked St Kitts & Nevis government for agreeing to host CPL 2021.

“It is really exciting to have the tournament window for 2021 confirmed and I would like to thank the St Kitts & Nevis government for agreeing to host this year’s event. We would also like to extend our thanks to Cricket West Indies for helping us create this window in a busy summer of cricket for them. We are looking forward to once again successfully staging the Hero CPL in 2021.” he said.

The Caribbean Premier League will look to build on the success that it enjoyed last season. The T20 carnival saw a combined viewership of 523 million, an increase of 67% on CPL 2019. The tournament was eventually won by the Kieron Pollard-led Trinbago Knight Riders, who enjoyed an unbeaten streak throughout the season.

South African left-arm leg-spinner, Tabraiz Shamsi, has reckoned that people have a misconception that players participating in the franchise-based T20 Leagues like the IPL out of a desire to earn money.

Shamsi, who has participated in T20 Leagues like the Caribbean Premier League, where he represented St.Kitts & Nevis Patriots and the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, said that the experience and exposure that a young player gets by playing leagues around the world is unparalleled.

Like many other players, Tabraiz Shamsi has benefitted from playing in franchise leagues all around the world.

“Yes definitely. I’ve been fortunate enough to play in the Caribbean Premier League and it was after I went to the CPL and did well that domestic teams in South Africa started to take me seriously and giving me regular game time and then I got picked for the national team after playing CPL and IPL,” Tabraiz Shamsi told Cricket Pakistan.

Shamsi, who has represented St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots in 27 matches, said that his performances in T20 Leagues not only helped him gain exposure and confidence but it also led to the national selectors take note of him.

“I find that it has helped my game quite a lot playing in the CPL, IPL and English County Cricket. People see it as a money thing and say that the players are participating in these tournaments for greed. Personally speaking, of course you do earn a bit of money but what is most important are the things that you learn from the people who are not really in your circle,” Shamsi added.

He also added that sharing the dressing room with cricketers hailing from different countries and just observing their way of doing things has accelerated his growth as a spinner.

“So, you are hearing different chats from West Indian players or Indian players and you are learning about the different ways people think about the game and train. You pick up the small things like that and I think that sort of sure accelerated my growth as a spin-bowler,” he added.

Tim Seifert becomes the obvious choice wicketkeeper in our fantasy cricket team ahead of Andre Fletcher because of a superior CPL 2020 campaign. Lendl Simmons and Tion Webster showed good hands in the semi-final of the tournament and will definitely be the batsmen from Trinbago in our Playing 11 Fantasy team. Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo qualify as the all-rounders in the fantasy side. Akeal Hosein qualifies as the bowler into the fantasy side.

Age is just a  number and Pravin Tambe is proving it with every outing of his in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Last month, the 48-year old added another milestone in his career when he became the first Indian player to play in the CPL.

He was picked in the Trinbago Knight Riders’ (TKR’s) starting XI against St Lucia Zouks. On Sunday, he played his third game for the side against St Nevis and Kitts Patriots and made a big mark by taking a stunning catch in addition to picking up a wicket.

In the seventh over of the Patriots innings, he took the brilliant catch to send back dangerous Ben Dunk. He made a full length dive to take the catch and send back the Australian. The left-handed batsman went for a reverse scoop off Fawad Ahmed but only managed to top edge it.

The ball looked set to fall in the no man’s land but Pravin Tambe had other ideas. He ran to his right from short third man, covered a good distance before making a full length dive to grab the ball with both the hands. In the very next over, he made his mark again by dismissing Joshua Da Silva.

Here is a clip of his catch and the wicket:

As far as the match is concerned, TKR thrashed the Patriots by nine wickets to continue their winning run in the tournament. The Patriots were all out for just 77 with Fawad Ahmed picking up 4 wickets. In reply, TKR chased down the total in 12 overs

The Kieron Pollard-led side has finished the league stage with ten wins from as many games. They will now take on Jamaica Tallawahs in the first semifinal.
