Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has reportedly decided against wearing and endorsing the logo of a betting firm during the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL). The move directly contradicts Pakistan Super League’s stance on the matter.
Several betting companies have been serving as sponsors of the PSL franchises. According to reports, the right-handed batsman had incorporated a clause that he wouldn’t be involved in the promotion of betting firms in the LPL. Babar Azam signed his maiden LPL contract earlier this year and will play in the upcoming edition of the competition.
He is not the first player from Pakistan in recent times to take such a step against the betting firms. Earlier, his teammate and Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan had also refused to wear the logo of a betting company in the PSL.

Babar Azam & Co. against endorsing betting companies:
According to PTI, not only Babar Azam and Rizwan but most of the Pakistani players are not willing to endorse betting companies. The players are even objecting to surrogate advertising as they want to stay clear of endorsing such firms that promote betting.

“Most of the Pakistani players are telling franchise owners and league organizers they don’t want to be associated with wearing logos and endorsing them if they belong to any betting company including through surrogate advertising,” the source said.
The Pakistani players’ stand on the matter is completely opposite to that of the PSL. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the PSL franchises were sponsored by betting companies in the league’s last edition. The Pakistani players wore the logos of such firms on their jerseys.

During a recent home series for Pakistan, a betting website employed surrogate advertising to promote its platform. The same company was also one of the main sponsors in the PSL. Babar Azam, however, has made it clear that he does not want to be associated with such companies in the LPL. The batting star will be leading Colombo Strikers in the competition, scheduled to be played from July 30 to August 22.
