Pakistan’s Right-arm fast bowler Naseem Shah, who joined PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators in the year 2019, is going to end his association with the franchise ahead of the ninth edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL). According to a media source, Naseem Shah has attributed personal reasons for his decision to part ways. He won the PSL title with the franchise in 2019.

The report further informs that there is a keen interest from both Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi in claiming Naseem Shah’s services for the upcoming edition of the league. Naseem Shah might enter the draft or may be involved in a trade deal as his move has gained a lot of attraction and speculations regarding his move have already started.

During a match in the PSL season 8 between Quetta Gladiator and Lahore Qalandars, Naseem was seen frustrated prompting the fans that he is not happy with the franchise. Naseem Shah is one of the best fast bowlers currently in the Pakistan team. However, an injury ruled him out of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Naseem got injured during the Asia Cup, ruling him out of the World Cup 2023. Following the injury, the fast bowler underwent shoulder surgery in October and is presently rehabilitating, expecting a quick return to the squad.

Naseem Shah’s Injury Was A Big Blow For Pakistan

Pakistan did not have a memorable World Cup 2023 campaign. They lost five matches out of nine and were eliminated, failing to qualify for the semi-finals. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to host the draft for the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Lahore later this year. The draft is scheduled to follow the conclusion of the National T20 Cup, marking a crucial event in assembling teams for the PSL 2024.

The PSL governing council held a meeting at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, Zaka Ashraf, headed the event, where the council discussed various aspects related to the PSL, including the draft on December 14.

During a meeting at the National Cricket Academy, representatives from all six HBL PSL franchises, along with PCB officials, engaged in a productive and in-depth discussion. The topics covered included various operational and logistical aspects of the next PSL edition.

PSL Governing Council To Write Letter To Interior Ministry

Amid the upcoming general election in Pakistan in February 2024, the HBL Pakistan Super League governing council unanimously agreed to seek formal advice from the government to determine the exact dates and venues for the next edition of the T20 tournament.

The PCB will formally write to the interior ministry to inquire about the feasibility of hosting PSL9 in Pakistan during the election period or considering a relocation to the UAE. The final decision on the venue will be contingent upon the government’s directive based.

The tentative schedule for the ninth edition of the PSL is from February 8 to March 24, 2024. The 2024 PSL is planned to occur in the window following the conclusion of SA20 and ILT20 and preceding the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Pakistan Cricket Board, on Friday (November 10), announced the list of retained players ahead of the draft for the next season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The PCB also announced that the draft for PSL 2024 is tentatively scheduled to take place in mid December.

A total of six teams will be participating in the competition. While there were reports stating that the PCB was keen on increasing the number of teams ahead of the upcoming edition, the board has decided against it for the time being. With not much time left in the draft, the teams have announced their retentions along with their new categories.

PSL 2024: Players and their categories:

Pakistan stars Iftikhar Ahmed and Naseem Shah, who ply their trades for Quetta Gladiators, have been upgraded from diamond to platinum. On the other hand, wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed has been promoted from gold to diamond.

Peshawar Zalmi’s Mohammad Haris has been moved to diamond from gold. Multan Sultans’ emerging pacers from last year Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah have been moved to the gold category. Islamabad United duo Azam Khan and Faheem Ashraf have been transferred to diamond category from gold category while Lahore Qalandars’ Kamran Ghulam and Zaman Khan have been handed the gold contract from silver and emerging, respectively.

At the same time, a number of players have been demoted in the categories too. The players who have been demoted are Mohammad Nawaz (Quetta, Platinum to Diamond), Mohammad Hasnain (Quetta, Diamond to Gold), Haider Ali (Karachi, Platinum to Gold) and Asif Ali (Islamabad, Platinum to Diamond). The PCB has also announced that players who have featured for Pakistan in international cricket should not be placed below the gold category. The next edition of the PSL is tentatively scheduled for 8 February to 24 March 2024.

The discussion regarding the relocation of the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season from Pakistan to Dubai has been going on and it has recently escalated, as per Cricket Pakistan. According to reports and details, the general elections in Pakistan have been announced and the date for the same is selected as February 8. This has sparked a debate surrounding the proposed dates of the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), from February 8 to March 24.

Discussions are going on about hosting the opening ceremony and a few matches in Dubai amid concerns regarding security arrangements. According to sources, a high-ranking official, who is associated with the PSL has been actively working in order to secure matches in the UAE since the beginning of the year. This official had also previously suggested the shifting of the league to Dubai during the 2023 season after a minor incident took place in Karachi, but his proposal was rejected.

Prior to this, when a disagreement took place concerning the security funds released by the Punjab government, discussions about relocating the league to Dubai emerged. This particular high-ranking official has close ties with the previous management of PCB, yet Zaka Ashraf who is the current chairman of PCB chose not to remove him from his position, and the official still promotes his desires about shifting the ninth edition of the league to UAE.

PSL 2024 Can Be Rescheduled And Held In Pakistan

The official in question thought that Zaka Ashraf might not get an extension, making his goal easily achievable, but his whole plan fell apart. Franchises have different opinions amongst themselves. Some support the cause while others oppose it.

However, one of the franchise owners expressed his concerns that moving the league out of Pakistan would lead to a decrease in income, as there are additional expenses in UAE such as venue rent, air tickets, expensive hotels, etc. Despite this, the league could still be held in Pakistan by changing the schedule to accommodate the general election period.

It’s also noteworthy that the UAE is going to host its own ILT20 league from January 19 to February 17, so the PSL 2024 could potentially be held there from February 18 onwards. Dubai has been the go-to venue to host franchise league matches. They have also hosted one full season of IPL in 2020 and two half seasons in 2014 and 2021.

Former New Zealand National Cricket Team coach and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) director of cricket, Mike Hesson, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Islamabad United.

Mike Hesson is a highly experienced and successful coach. He had a great 6-year stint with New Zealand as head coach after taking over the job in 2012.

Subsequently, he joined Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) as head coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL), before taking over the role of Director of Cricket Operations at the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He recently parted ways with the RCB franchise.

The owner of Islamabad United Ali Naqvi, in an official statement issued by the franchise, said that they are thrilled to rope in the services of Mike Hesson.

“I am lucky enough to feature in the World Cup in India. It was a surreal experience,” Dalton quipped.

Right-handed batter and right-arm fast-medium bowler Dalton was named Middlesex Player of the Year in 2013 for her all-around excellence.

Armed with fervour for the game, she embarked on an arduous coaching journey that demanded resilience and perseverance.

Dalton, 31, also started her coaching journey by working with young players including female players at Hutton CC, a local junior club in Essex.

Apart from innovative strategies and meticulous attention to detail, Dalton’s success has been largely attributed to her capacity to establish a personal connection with each player and modify her coaching style to suit their demands.

But, biomechanics is biomechanics for her.

She also became one of the youngest coaches to impress her mentor and coach—Ian Pont at the National Fast Bowling Academy (NFBA) in Hertfordshire and has emerged as an ECB-certified Level 3 Advanced Coach. As of now, Dalton is working on fast bowlers at the NFBA.

Dalton’s extensive coaching background and expertise make her a valuable addition to the PSL team. She acquired Irish citizenship in 2015 to bolster her cricketing career, as her father and grandparents hail from Ireland.

Born in Leyton, a town nestled in East London, where football reigned as a captivating spectacle, to her subsequent participation in the renowned England academy as an opening fast bowler for over two years.

Hailing from a humble English town, Dalton harbours an unwavering ambition to excel in her chosen path, brimming with hope for a prosperous future.

Dalton, an accomplished Irish cricketer, candidly shares her experiences, and triumphs as she navigates the coaching realm.

“I didn’t grow up in Leyton, I was born there and I certainly haven’t faced any challenges with where I live at all – including my stay in India and Pakistan. Secondly, I didn’t emigrate to Ireland. I flew to, and from games and training, living in the UK,” Dalton reminisced.

Dalton, much like other cricketers, acquired her knowledge of the game through observing her father and brothers play. During her younger years, she accompanied her brothers to a nearby cricket club, where he was a frequent participant.

Consequently, at a tender age, she instantly developed a deep affection for the sport. She then proceeded to boast about how she is superior in sports compared to her brother.

It all makes sense.

Dalton began her cricket journey at the age of 10, joining the Loughton Cricket Club (LCC) where she honed her skills for several years. Her dedication and passion for the sport eventually propelled her towards making a significant impact in the world of cricket.

“I started playing cricket at the age of 10, somewhere called Loughton Cricket Club (LCC). I played there for a good number of years all the way up into adult cricket which was great,” she maintained.

In 2009, Dalton made it to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Camp, which took place in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Fast forward six years, Dalton grabbed eyeballs by becoming the first female batter to score a century while representing the Halstead men’s team in a league game against the Felixstowe Cricket Club in England.

Interestingly, Dalton also possessed a talent for tennis and football, having even represented the Under-19 West Ham Football Club and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (first-team) at one point.

However, it was at the age of 17 that she made the pivotal choice to dedicate her time and efforts solely to cricket, recognising her true passion and potential in the game.

The world-renowned fast-bowling coach and former English cricketer – Ian Pont has hailed Catherine and is proud of her contributions to coaching, adding she will reach the pinnacle of her profession.

Pont, who first met Dalton when she was 17, was asked about Dalton’s abilities as a fast bowling coach, considering her previous experience at NFBA in the UK.

However, several days later, Alex Hartley, an English International and the 2017 World Cup Winner was selected by the Sultans as an assistant spin bowling coach.

Hartley will have the privilege of working under the guidance of the legendary Saqlain Mushtaq.

“It’s a privilege to be on board. As a former women’s international, to be recognised and given the chance to work in the men’s game speaks volumes for the progress of women’s cricket. It’s also a demonstration of the forward-thinking leadership at Multan Sultans,” Hartley said.

Not only this, in August 2023— Sultans picked Hijab Zahid as the Pakistan Super League’s first female general manager.

“Catherine is an exceptional coach who has a proven track record of nurturing fast bowling talent across the world.

“Her inclusion to the coaching staff not only elevates the squad but also establishes an important milestone in inclusion and equity for Pakistan cricket as a whole. We welcome her to the Sultans family,” Hijab said.

It is high time that the world recognises that talent knows no gender.

As Dalton is set to embark on her PSL journey, anticipation and excitement will course through her veins.

The weight of her achievement, the significance of her presence as a female coach in a male-dominated sport – with this, the stage is set for her to rule the roost.

She would carry with her – the hopes and aspirations of countless aspiring young cricketers of Ali Tareen Academy, breaking barriers and shattering stereotypes with every step she is going to take, this time not as a player, but as a certified coach who has been awarded a first-class honours degree in Physical and Sport Education (B.A.) from St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, London.

Dalton spoke about future ambitions and aspirations, providing insights into her long-term vision as well as her dedication to continuous personal and professional growth. She further sheds light on her crucial role within the broader cricket coaching landscape.

Q&A: Interview with Cath Dalton:

TIM: What prompted you to take the historic role of fast bowling coach at PSL franchise Multan Sultans—and what would be your primary focus to work after closely monitoring the team? And, describe the experience of helping the youngsters, especially in Lodhran (Ali Tareen Academy).

CATH: About five years ago, I met Ali Tareen and I have been twice to Lodhran to do some camps alongside my coach and actually mentor Ian Pont. We’ve been to Pakistan and worked with some fast-class, PSL, Under-23 and Under-19 players and it was a fantastic experience for me.

Having never been to Pakistan – you know the hospitality and everything about the place was incredible. I love that and the passion for pace [bowling] in Pakistan is wonderful to see. And, you know working with those players, working with players that want to bowl faster, want to get better, and want to work on the bio-mechanics of their technique – was very special.

And, I got asked to do the role by Ali, and it was the easiest “yes” that I’ve had to say. Ali is a visionary and he’s looking to empower women through sport and this is an opportunity I am excited about.

I am looking forward to working with the team obviously the draft hasn’t happened yet, but when it does I am really looking forward to working with the team and hopefully getting Multan Sultans to lift that trophy.

TIM: Pakistan has been historically known for its fast bowling and given the latest example of Arshad Iqbal – you are working on, do you think it would make your job a bit easier at the Sultans’ given the wealth of experience you share?

CATH: Pakistan has produced some incredible fast bowlers over the years. And, it is the country that has the passion for the pace; you can see that in the youngsters coming through in the PSL. There’s a huge amount of bowlers bowling quick speeds you know 90mphs.

Hopefully, over the next couple of years we will see even more fast bowlers doing well and through an enhanced understanding of bio-mechanics bowlers can increase their pace; can become faster and can become more accurate.

So, I am really looking forward to the role and hopefully helping some fast bowlers achieve even higher speeds.

TIM: How important it was to work under prominent coach – Ian Pont and your experience of coaching at the NFBA, Ultimate Pace Foundation and Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) especially working with Indian bowler Deepak Chahar?

CATH: I am really privileged to work with Ian Pont. I have worked with him over a long period of time. He helped me personally in my fast bowling journey from being a county cricketer for Essex to elevating me to new levels and eventually opening the bowling for England academy and that was a great experience learning bio-mechanics – how to bowl faster.

So, Ian has been something who has helped me even in my coaching journey. My experience of coaching at the National Fast Bowling Association (NFBA) has been [incredible].

You know we run a really good programme over here in the UK. We have a lot of talented fast bowlers, but have three professional cricketers out of our academy so far.

So, we are hoping that it goes from strength to strength over the next couple of years.

I had a really great experience as well working out in India several times. And, I have worked with Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) and Deepak Chahar very closely and that was a wonderful opportunity for me to help advance Deepak’s understanding of his bio-mechanics.

We worked on some technical interventions which have helped him in his career but also given him some great slower balls as well.

So, that was a really good experience and one I am privileged and blessed that I have had.

TIM: Could you share some notable experiences that have shaped your career as a female fast bowling coach what prompted you to move from England to Ireland?

CATH: I have had a lot of experience in going through some bio-mechanical changes to my bowling action which increased my speed and accuracy and that really shaped me into wanting to coach.

I also studied sports teaching as a degree at university. So, I always had a passion for coaching and teaching and the opportunity to become a fast bowling coach is something I was really excited about and I am.

I was in the England academy for a couple of seasons as a player and then I moved to Ireland after that to play for Ireland which was a fantastic experience for me.

I played the 2016 T20 World Cup in India and I am still playing, I play for Essex as a state side.

And, all this experience as a player shapes you as a coach as well and you know gives you the guidelines for helping players and supporting them in their own personal journey.

TIM: How do you adapt your coaching style to cater to the different needs of male and female athletes you have been at the forefront of the player development program for five years, according to Ali Khan Tareen, who recently stated, “Of all the coaching announcements, this is my favourite.” How do you see it?

CATH: I think it is important as a coach that you adapt to any player’s needs. So, individually working with the player is really important making sure that you understand as a coach what every individual requires from you whether that be more tactical information even you know just showing empathy or support or even it be a bio-mechanical change.

So, every player you have to take as an individual and then from there, you are hopefully bound to help them by enhancing their cricket career and their journey. As I said before, enhance their speed and accuracy and make them better all-round cricketers.

TIM: What are the primary technical aspects you focus on while training aspiring fast bowlers?

CATH: I think it’s important to look at an individual as I said earlier with technical aspects you focus on can be very individual depending on a player.

So, you’re making sure the young understand bio-mechanises as a whole and then individualising it.

TIM: How do you approach the mental and psychological development of your fast bowlers?

CATH: The mental approach is such a big part of the game of cricket you can have great tactical awareness and good bowling technique. But mentally you need to be able to cope with pressure situations.

Understand what you’re doing when the heat of the moment is on. And, dealing with failure is a big thing especially with young players, you know, dealing with sometimes when things don’t go right and everybody has a bad day.

So, it’s learning to deal with those things and as a coach, it’s being as approachable as possible making sure, you’re happy to help a player go through game plans or mental approaches to the game and that can unlock their potential.

TIM: Are there specific challenges you face as a female coach in a predominantly male-dominated field? How do you navigate these challenges?

CATH: The thing that I have realised over the last 10 years of coaching is that no matter who you are working with if you can add value and enhance and improve their performance in the game, they don’t mind where the information comes from.

So, as a coach, it is vitally important that you are, the one that is helping the player improve and that is the main thing with coaching and that is the main thing of being a fast bowling coach or coaching any discipline is player improvement, play development, it becomes less about you as a coach and more about the individual you’re working with.

TIM: Can you describe any unique methods or training techniques you employ to enhance the performance of your fast bowlers?

CATH: I think the technical side of fast bowling is something that’s beginning to be adopted into a coach’s armoury over the last couple of years, you’ve seen a lot more coaches talking about the technical side of fast bowling, and the biomechanics of how to bowl faster and straighter and everybody can increase their speeds and improve what they’re doing.

If you take a batter, they will look to improve and enhance their technique and bowlers can do the same the better your technique, the better your outcomes are going to be and the more control you’re going to have over the cricket ball and of course, the more pace you’re going to express through your action.

TIM: How do you foster positive team dynamics and build rapport with your fast bowlers and what role do data analytics and technology play in your coaching approach?

CATH: Data is really important and technology because it allows you to assess a bowler and understand what they’re doing.

You know, maybe in certain aspects of the game and certain times during the game. Are they good at the death of they could, you know, opening overs – good bowling at left-handers? It gives you a really good oversight of what’s happening. The key then, is to take that information and use it positively.

It’s good to have data but it has to be used in a positive way to then, enhance your coaching and hopefully help a player improve and make them better in certain situations.

TIM: Could you share any notable success stories of fast bowlers you have coached, and how they achieved their goals under your guidance?

CATH: I have worked with a lot of players who have gone on to play first-class cricket obviously, Deepak Chahar would be the main success story.

Deepak was out of his state side. He wasn’t playing Ranji trophy cricket at all when we first met him and now he’s become a global sensation in the world of pace bowling, winning the IPL several times and playing for India.

Also, we have a lot of young players who’ve gone on to play first-class cricket through our Academy and have seen a lot of players in India who have also gone on to play first-class cricket.

TIM: What are your aspirations and goals as a female fast bowling coach for the future and your memories of being part of the 2016 Ireland women’s T20 World Cup team in India?

CATH: I have aspirations to keep going to keep improving players. And one day, I would love to be a head coach of a franchise side or an international team. That would be an amazing experience for me.

I had an incredible experience at the 2016 World Cup in India with the Ireland women’s team.

I learned a huge amount during that journey and it has definitely set me up for my coaching future.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) Governing Council held a meeting in Lahore on Monday (September 25) to discuss the roadmap for the upcoming season of the T20 tournament. The meeting was chaired by Zaka Ashraf, Chairman of the PCB Management Committee.

A number of key decisions were taken for the competition and one of the most important ones was the number of teams to play in the forthcoming edition. There were rumors that the PCB was planning to increase the number of teams in the PSL after the success of the competition in the last few years. Reports suggested that four new teams could be added to PSL.

However, the PCB has dropped the plan as of now. The PCB has confirmed that six teams will continue to feature in the PSL. A release from the PCB also stated that the board is planning to explore opportunities to start a women’s league.

“The upcoming ninth season will be played with six teams. No additional team will be added in the upcoming season. For the promotion and support of women’s cricket, the PCB will continue to explore opportunities for women’s league or exhibition matches during HBL PSL,” stated the release.

Schedule for PSL 2024:

In the official statement, the PCB also stated the time period during which PSL 2024 is set to be played. The PCB confirmed that the window for the next season of the tournament is between February 8 and March 24. The final schedule will be announced after the next meeting.

“The window for the upcoming season is decided between 8 February to 24 March 2024. A final schedule will be confirmed in the next meeting,” PCB confirmed.

Some other key discussions taken during the meeting are:

• It was decided that the PCB will continue to work closely with the franchises to explore alternative venues as a part of contingency planning.
• A detailed discussion with respect to the organization of the PSL 9 including the digital, media rights, and other commercial assets tender process took place.
• Lastly, a report of the previous edition of PSL was presented in the meeting and the franchisees’ representatives were briefed on the success of the eighth edition. Franchises appreciated the effort of PCB, government agencies, and all stakeholders who helped in the delivery of the event at four venues.

The new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Governing Council will have their first meeting on September 25.

According to a report in Cricket Pakistan, the meeting is likely to be done through a video conferencing platform as a number of PSL franchise owners are outside Pakistan. The main agenda for the meeting is to finalise the dates for the next edition of the PSL. As of now, there is little clarity over when will the next edition of Pakistan’s premier T20 competition take place.

The last edition of the tournament was played from February 13 to March 18. It would be interesting to see the schedule for the next PSL as the tournament will face a stiff challenge from various other T20 competitions that are scheduled to take place at the start of the next year.

UAE’s International League T20 is set to take place from January 13 – February 12. On the other hand, South Africa’s SA20 will be played from January 10 to February 10. The PSL is likely to start once both the competitions end in order to have players available.

PSL to take place in UAE?

The PCB and the PSL officials along with the franchise owners will also discuss the possibility of organising the tournament in the UAE due to the general elections in Pakistan early next year. Finalising the dates for the tournament in UAE, however, won’t be an easy task. With the ILT20 to finish on February 12, the availability of venues might be a big issue.

The report further added that the upcoming meeting will be PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf’s first official interaction with the franchise owners. The Ashraf-led PCB management committee has also decided against expanding the league until the league’s tenth edition. The previous PCB regime had shown interest in adding four more teams to the competition.

Abdul Rehman to take over as the new head coach of Multan Sultans after serving the franchise as the team’s assistant coach for the last five years. The head coach, Abdul Rehman will replace Andy Flower’s position in the Multan-based franchise.

In a statement released by the former coach, Andy Flower wrote that the last five years with the Multan Sultans were amazing, and was privileged to be a part of the franchise.

The Zimbabwean coach, Andy Flower revealed that after joining Multan Sultans he asked the team authorities to bring Abdul Rehman to be his assistant coach.

Flower further praised Abdul Rehman and said that he is an exceptional coach and very professional and that he will bring glory to the team.

“The past five years have been a great journey for the Multan Sultans and I am privileged to have been part of it. When I agreed to join the Sultans, my first request was for Abdul Rehman to be my assistant coach. He is an exceptional coach and a consummate professional, and I am confident the team will benefit with him at the helm,” Andy Flower said.

Last month, Andy Flower was revealed as the new head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a three-year deal. In the 2023 IPL season, Andy Flower led the Lucknow-based franchise and took the team to two consecutive playoffs in their first two years in the tournament.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly given up on its plans to expand the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for the time being.

The expansion plan was proposed by former PCB chief Najam Sethi. The ex-PCB chief wanted two more teams in the six-team competition. But before the plan could be executed, he was sacked from his position. And according to a report in Cricket Pakistan, the current PCB regime is not interested in increasing the number of PSL teams at the moment.

The report stated that several individuals are being presented as potential new team owners in the PSL. However, PCB chief Zaka Ashraf is not willing to make any decision without consulting with the existing franchises. As per the original agreement, the PCB is barred from adding a new team to the Pakistan Super League for ten years.

The PCB is likely to face legal issues if they decide to violate the agreement and add two more teams to the PSL. Ashraf is yet to talk to the PSL franchise owners on the issue due to his busy schedule. The PCB chief reportedly wants to convene a governing council meeting in the coming days to discuss the issues with team owners.

PSL franchise owners not in favour of new teams:

The report also stated that the owners of the current Pakistan Super League teams are not in favor of adding more teams to the league. One franchise has said that it does not want to see any new team reap the benefit of the hard work put in by them and other teams.

At present, it looks highly unlikely that the PCB would be able to add new teams to the PSL. They can do so only after the tenth season. The PSL began in 2016 and is one of the most popular T20 competitions in the world at present. Top cricketers from around the world have been consistently plying their trade in the tournament. So far, eight seasons of the tournament have been played.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has reportedly decided against wearing and endorsing the logo of a betting firm during the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL). The move directly contradicts Pakistan Super League’s stance on the matter.

Several betting companies have been serving as sponsors of the PSL franchises. According to reports, the right-handed batsman had incorporated a clause that he wouldn’t be involved in the promotion of betting firms in the LPL. Babar Azam signed his maiden LPL contract earlier this year and will play in the upcoming edition of the competition.

The Pakistani players’ stand on the matter is completely opposite to that of the PSL. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the PSL franchises were sponsored by betting companies in the league’s last edition. The Pakistani players wore the logos of such firms on their jerseys.

The PCB’s ability to “sacrifice” the home series was confirmed at the most recent PSL governing council meeting. The board has started talking to a number of stakeholders in an effort to create a clear window for the upcoming PSL.

The PCB may encounter additional difficulties if the West Indies series is played after Ramadan, which falls after the second week of April. Several West Indies players may be unavailable for the bilateral series in Pakistan because the IPL is set to take place in April–May. The PCB hasn’t provided any information regarding a potential new date for the series, but there have been discussions about the idea of playing the home series from March to April when Ramadan is observed.

However, as players will be fasting during that month, playing Tests will provide significant difficulties. In spite of this, the PCB played a limited-overs series against New Zealand during Ramadan this year, with the five T20I matches taking place at night and the five ODI matches taking place after Ramadan.

There Is Immense Pressure To Increase The Number Of Teams In PSL – Najam Sethi

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee chairman Najam Sethi said that the number of teams in the PSL can be extended in the future with demand from franchises. Sethi pointed out that the former PCB chairman didn’t want to increase the number of teams.

“There is immense pressure to increase the number of teams in PSL, but unfortunately, Ehsan Mani and Ramiz Raja agreed with the franchises that only six teams will play in the next two years. However, it was an eight-team project,” Najam Sethi said.

The PCB approved the overhaul of the PSL in November 2016, which included a proposal to register the league as a private limited company independent of the PCB.

The proposal was unanimously approved by the governing body despite the then-PCB chairman Shahryar Khan’s concerns over the decision, but the implementation was delayed as planned.

In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Najam Sethi emphasized the importance of having separate management for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), with the board holding majority shares.

“The Pakistan Super League (PSL), should be a separate company from the PCB with the board holding the majority of the shares, but the private sector should also be included to strengthen it,” Najam Sethi said.

Najam Sethi admitted that his proposal to create a separate company for PSL has faced controversy in the past. The 74-year-old believes that PSL should be a separate company with its own secretariat, chairman, and board of governors.

“In the past, when I presented this suggestion, people said that because I am the chairman of the PSL, I want to create a separate company to ensure my own interests, although this was not true,” he said.

“The IPL is there, but if you ask any player around the world who has played in the PSL, he would say that Pakistan’s league is the toughest in the world.”

Refuting this claim, Danish Kaneria, in an interview with Times Now, praised BCCI for IPL’s success and for making it one of the most valuable leagues in the world.

“Bakwaas baat hai (It’s all rubbish). The stature of IPL is the greatest all over the world, and no other league even comes close. The BCCI has made the league at par with the NFL  (National Football League) of USA,” he said.

Mohammad Rizwan might have captained Pakistan’s national team despite not being in the Playing XI

Mohammad Rizwan might have done something wholly unique in Pakistan’s Test match against New Zealand earlier this year, as he allegedly captained the side despite not being in the playing XI.

In the second Test match against New Zealand back in January, Sarfaraz Ahmed was picked over Rizwan as the keeper for the side. On the 3rd day of the match, captain Babar Azam was feeling unwell and did not take the field.

Now, it is not clear what actually happened, but Mohammad Rizwan, the substitute fielder, led the side into the field.

MCC Law 24.1.2 states that a substitute fielder cannot be an official captain on the field. Seeing this, the PCB clarified later that evening that it was Sarfaraz who was the captain on that day, but many still have suspicions.

In a recent interview, Najam Sethi claimed that there is not much internal discussion about a team extension, but there is interest from several parties to buy new PSL teams.

With PSL viewership on the rise year by year, a plan to add more teams into the 6-team tournament makes sense. It is similar to what IPL did by adding Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022.

Najam Sethi discusses the concerns current teams might have in regards to adding new franchises to PSL

In the same interview, Najam Sethi discussed that the current PSL franchises may have concerns about the monetary and market impact of adding two new teams into the tournament.

“There are a lot of comprehensions and concerns from the franchises regarding their revenues and how the market can take it or not. And for this, we have to sit and discuss because without them we can’t move forward,” Sethi said.

Although, the 74-year-old reassured the existing teams that they will see their profits increase, not dwindle, by the addition, saying –

“The revenue will increase and also teams will increase, and my advice to the other six franchises is that you will not suffer any loss, but you will make a profit from this.”

“I think you can only perform in the match when you practice hard. I play 500-600 balls daily during my practice. Even double balls when I am out of form. I believe practice is so important for anyone who wants to perform on the ground,” he stated.

“When you bring new players, you break a team combination. Some new players, who are selected, will perform in the Afghanistan series, so will they bring back the senior players back with lesser strike rate. Media will also put pressure on them. This is the first step towards destroying Pakistan team,” Rashid Latif added.

The incident happened in the 19th over of Lahore Qalandars’ batting when Farooqi used abusive language after dismissing the batter.

Lahore Qalandars defeated Islamabad United by 119 runs on Thursday in the 26th game of the Pakistan Super League at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Fazalhaq Farooqi was fined for using abusive language:

Fazalhaq Farooqi of Islamabad United was fined 10% of his match money for violating the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Staff during his team’s play against Lahore Qalandars in the 26th fixture of the HBL PSL 8 on Thursday evening at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Farooqi was found to have breached PCB Code of Conduct Article 2.5, which states that: “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during a match.”

Farooqi used foul language after removing the batsman in the 19th over of the Lahore Qalandars’ batting.

Farooqi entered a guilty plea and agreed to the sentence suggested by match referee Roshan Mahanama. On-field umpires Aleem Dar and Faisal Khan Afridi levelled the charge.

New Zealand commentator Simon Doull revealed the social media abuse he received after criticizing Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam after he made a century against Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League on Tuesday.

Doull indicated yesterday while commentating on the competition, that Babar was playing for his milestone rather than for the team.

Simon Doull has spoken out against the social media abuse he has received in response to his criticism of Babar Azam during his maiden Pakistan Super League century yesterday (March 8).

Doull took to Instagram and posted a screenshot of a person sending him an expletive-laden message with the caption, “So sorry to have upset you Feroz. It’s just an opinion and I get paid for it. It’s ok if you don’t agree but this language is never ok. And my mother has also passed,” The message made a derogatory reference to Doull’s mother and sister.

Some people, notably former England cricketer and fellow commentator Alex Hartley and former Pakistan cricketer Sana Mir, supported Doull.

Simon Doull blasts Babar Azam on-air for prioritizing his own achievement over the team’s goal:

Babar received criticism for his rapid rate of scoring despite hitting a lot of balls. The Zalmi skipper got off to a fast start, but as he neared his century, he slowed down significantly.

Incidentally, Babar Azam needed 14 deliveries to reach the three-figure mark after reaching 83 off of 46 balls. The abrupt drop in strike rate wasn’t ignored, as at the time-airing pundit Simon Doull criticized Babar for prioritizing his personal achievement over the team’s objective.

“Rather than putting the team first… the last little while, that’s all that been happening. Rather than looking for boundaries, still, so much firepower to come. Hundreds are brilliant, stats are great, but it has to be team first,” Simon Doull said while commentating.

Zalmi performed admirably with the bat, but he was unsuccessful with the ball despite his efforts. A staggering 241 runs were tracked down by the Gladiators. Jason Roy, the Gladiators’ opening batsman, scored 145 runs off just 63 balls. On the game-winning knock, he hit five massive sixes and twenty boundaries.

In game 21 of the PSL 2023, Islamabad United batted first and scored a formidable total at the Pindi Club Stadium thanks to Sarfaraz and company. Ramiz Raja, the former head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), also made a strong comment about Umar Akmal, a talented batsman who on Sunday played an important inning in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023.

“Umar Akmal’s story is a literal definition of great talent but wasted talent, unfortunately. However, there is a lesson for all the players, if you are not disciplined and if you cannot zip your mouth while playing, then there is a larger probability that you will be at the receiving end of injustice- quite an unfortunate scenario,” Ramiz Raja said.

“He was one of my favorite players when he started cricket, and we all saw a glimpse today of how much talent he carries. He destroyed Islamabad United’s finest bowling attack,” Ramiz  Raja was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Akmal, who was a victim of negligence and a lack of discipline, was referred to by Raja as the biggest match-winner.

“I am not sure what the future holds for him – will he be able to become an asset for us or not, but in today’s date, there is no bigger match-winner than Umar Akmal in Pakistan – playing at 6 or 7. There have been fitness issues with him, but there is a discipline problem as well. You are supposed to play cricket with blinkers on; once you quit playing cricket, you are free to give any kind of opinion. He needs to control his quarreling attitude,” Ramiz Raja said.

Akmal, who turns 33 in May, has represented Pakistan in 84 T20 matches, 121 ODIs, and 16 Test matches. In Gaddafi Stadium in 2019, Akmal last competed in an international game against Sri Lanka.

We should enjoy it instead of criticizing individually and consistently” Wasim Akram said.

If Mohammad Amir returns to Pakistan under Babar Azam’s captaincy, it will be exciting to see. In a T20I match against England back in August of last year, the left-armer last appeared for the Men in Green.

Akhtar told a very touching story involving Babar Azam, recalling the moment when he bowled to him for the first time in the practice nets. Akhtar said that despite his repeated warnings to Babar to avoid hitting him in a straight line, Babar nonetheless struck him.

“I still remember Babar used to come to the academy. Mudassar bhai would accompany him at the time. Once, I told Babar to bat in the nets, and specifically told him to not hit me for a straight drive,” Shoaib Akhtar began as he revealed the story on Suno News.

“But he’s a natural batter who relies on his cover and straight drives. Soon, he hit me for one. Tab maine kaha, ‘main isko chhorunga nahi’ (Then I said, I won’t spare you). Then, Mudassar bhai told Babar to come out varna ye maar dega ball (or else he will hit you),” Shoaib Akhtar revealed.

Pakistan failed to win a single Test at home under Babar Azam’s captaincy in 2022 and recently lost an ODI series to New Zealand at home as well.

Kieron Pollard breached Article 2.5, which states that “using language, acts, or gestures that denigrate or could cause an angry reaction from a batter following his/her ejection during a match” is prohibited.

The event occurred in the 13th over of the first innings, when Kieron Pollard signalled toward the pavilion after taking Abdullah Shafique’s catch off his own bowling.

Kieron Pollard accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Muhammad Javed Malik after pleading guilty to the offence. On-field umpires Martin Saggers and Faisal Afridi, third umpire Ahsan Raza, and fourth umpire Shozab Raza all levelled the charge.

Imad Wasim, the captain of the Karachi Kings, was seen abusing young, rising bowler Ihsanullah Khan during the match between Karachi and Multan Sultans.

There were a few tense moments on the field during the competitive match between the two PSL teams.
When Multan Sultan’s bowler Ihsanullah Khan came to bat after Anwar Ali was dismissed in the 16th over of the game, the incident occurred. Imad Wasim, the captain of the Karachi Kings, was overheard telling Akif Javed to just bowl bouncers at the young player rather than full-length deliveries at the moment. Imad was speaking to Javed when he referred to Ihsanullah in a derogatory way.

Imad Wasim set a leg slip for Ihsanullah as he prepared to bat. However, the 20-year-old batsman survived three deliveries from Javed and finished the next over with an unbroken score of zero as Sultans were bowled out for 101 runs (17th).

Ihsanullah, who leads the league in wickets taken, has been a thorn in the side of the Karachi Kings because he has bowled efficient periods against them in the last two games.

During his Karachi Kings’ one-run loss against Islamabad United in the 21st game of the Pakistan Super League 2022 at the Gaddafi Stadium, Imad was fined 5% of his match fee for a Level 1 violation of the PSL Code of Conduct.

Haris Rauf, a Pakistani bowler currently playing for Lahore Qalandars in the ongoing 8th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2023), has voiced his intention to Dismiss Babar Azam and Virat Kohli.

Rauf was seen talking with Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar during a practice session in a video posted on social media by Qalandars. Rauf said that he wants to get rid of the two top hitters at any cost throughout the conversation.

Rauf was heard saying: “No matter what happens, I just need to take your wicket! Only Virat Kohli and you are the exceptions right now. Kane Williamson was saved from slip twice. But I have these 3-4 players in my mind.”

Rauf has definitely dismissed him on a few occasions in the nets, the Pakistani skipper retorted. But in response, the quick bowler said he wanted to get his wicket in a game.

Interestingly, Haris Rauf and Kohli faced off at the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. The great batsman defeated the pacer in a game of one-upmanship by smashing two consecutive sixes at a vital moment to turn the tide in India’s favor.

Haris Rauf’s performances have been a bit underwhelming:

The 15th match of PSL 2023 will feature Peshawar Zalmi vs. Lahore Qalandars at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, where Haris Rauf will have the chance to Dismiss Babar Azam.

The Qalandars made a massive score of 241 earlier after choosing to bat first and losing three wickets. With the help of three fours and ten sixes, Fakhar Zaman—who previously became the second batter, after Babar, to reach 2000 runs in the PSL—smashed his way to 96 runs off of 45 balls.

To set the Qalandars up for success, Fakhar and Abdullah Shafique combined for 120 runs for the second wicket off 63 balls. Shafique batted erratically, hitting five fours and as many sixes in his 75 runs off 41 balls.

Sam Billings started at No. 4 and finished with 47 runs off 23 balls, five fours, and three sixes, remaining unbeaten. The best bowler was Arshad Iqbal, who finished with statistics of 4-0-28-0. The bowler didn’t get a wicket, but he prevented the hitters from getting a handle on him.

Lahore and Peshawar are currently in fourth and fifth place respectively, with four points.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Punjab government have come to an agreement that allows the Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches to proceed as planned in Lahore and Rawalpindi. Najam Sethi, the PCB chief, announced on Twitter that they will split the expenses of lighting the routes during PSL 2023 matches in Lahore.

This agreement was reached after the PCB reached out to their patron-in-chief, Shahbaz Sharif, who is also the prime minister of Pakistan. This resolved a standoff that had the potential to relocate all of Lahore’s remaining PSL2023 games to Karachi.

It has been reported that for the past four days, the Punjab government requested that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) pay PKR 450 million to cover the security arrangements made by the administration.

The government initially claimed that the cost was PKR 900 million, but later revised it and offered to split the cost 50/50, with the PCB paying the remainder. However, the PCB refused to pay, maintaining that providing security was the responsibility of the provincial government.

The conflict emerged when the PCB strongly opposed the government’s demands, which included requesting extra payments for the PSL 2023 that the board deemed unprecedented.

Regarding the nine games scheduled in Karachi, the Sindh government has not requested that the PCB contribute to the security expenses. 

Instead, they are only asking for payment to cover catering expenses for the security personnel, which is estimated to be around PKR 30 million. On the other hand, the Punjab government’s security costs for the matches are approximately PKR 50 million, which the PCB has already paid.

Wasim and Huma were on an air ambulance en route to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for Huma’s treatment. The ambulance had to make a scheduled stop at Chennai airport to refuel.

We Did Not Even Have The Indian Visa: Wasim Akram

Wasim Akram revealed that during their journey on an air ambulance to Singapore for Huma’s treatment, the ambulance had to stop at Chennai airport for refuelling. At that point, Huma was unconscious and Akram was in tears. The situation was made worse by the fact that they did not have an Indian visa, as they both had Pakistani passports.

However, Wasim Akram expressed his gratitude towards the officials at Chennai airport, who went out of their way to help him during this difficult time. 

The security forces, customs, and immigration officials assured Akram that he didn’t need to worry about the visa and allowed him to take his wife to the hospital while they arranged for the visa. Akram was deeply touched by the kindness and humanity shown to him by the officials at Chennai airport, and he will never forget their help and support.

“I was flying to Singapore with my late wife and there was a stop in Chennai for refuelling. When he landed, she was unconscious, I was crying and people recognized me at the airport. We didn’t have an Indian visa. We both had Pakistani passports,” Akram told Sportstar.

“The people at the Chennai airport, the security forces, and the customs and immigration officials told me not to worry about the visa and take my wife to the hospital while they sort the visa out. That is something I will never forget, as a cricketer and as a human being,” Akram added.

PSL 2023: PCB Yet To Resolve Issue With Pakistan Government – Reports

On Sunday morning, the Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, Najam Sethi, reached out to Pakistan’s Prime Minister and the PCBs Patron-in-Chief, Shehbaz Sharif, in an effort to resolve the impasse between the PCB and the interim Punjab government over security expenses for the PSL 2023 matches in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

Sources indicate that Sethi explained his position to the Prime Minister and sought his intervention to help resolve the deadlock. In response, the Prime Minister assured Sethi of his full support.

Sethi also explained that if the interim Punjab government does not compromise on its demand of PKR 250 million for security expenses and expects the PCB to pay the remaining PKR 250 million bill, the board would be forced to make the difficult decision of relocating the matches to Karachi.

It is worth noting that the dispute centres around the cost of security arrangements for the tournament, with the interim Punjab government demanding a significant sum from the PCB, which the board is unwilling to pay.

Sources report that during his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday, PCB Management Committee Chairman Najam Sethi reiterated the board’s position that they will not pay the PKR 250 million security expenses demanded by the interim Punjab government. 

PSL 2023: PCB And Punjab Government Still On A Standstill

Sethi also received the PM’s assurance of full support. However, if the provincial government does not relent, Sethi explained that they may have to make the difficult decision to move the PSL 2023 matches to Karachi.

Initially, the interim Punjab government had requested the PCB to pay PKR 500 million for organizing the PSL 2023 matches in Lahore and Rawalpindi. The board has already given PKR 50 million to the Punjab government for food expenses. 

Later, the provincial government asked for PKR 450 million to cover the costs of lighting and security. However, after a cabinet meeting on Saturday, they decided to pay half of the bill, asking PCB to pay the remaining PKR 250 million. Despite this, both PCB and PSL franchises maintained their stance and refused to pay any amount requested by the provincial government.

Zalmi started their campaign with a tight win against Karachi after which they were defeated by Multan but their resilience against Quetta earned them a win in the third game, moreover, in their recent clash against Islamabad, they suffered a defeat by 6 wickets.

Young paceman Zaman Khan of Lahore Qalandars has declared his intention to dismiss Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam during their forthcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) match on Sunday.

On Sunday, February 26 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, in Match No.15 of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi, the speedster is set to meet Babar.

When Babar led the Karachi Kings, who are currently led by all-rounder Imad Wasim, in the previous PSL season, Zaman Khan had the opportunity to dismiss him, but he dropped a catch instead.

“My goal is to take Babar Azam’s wicket. Unfortunately, last year I dropped the catch myself, but this time, I am hopeful that I will be able to get him out,” Zaman Khan was quoted as saying.

Zaman Khan, who received the PSL 2022 Emerging Player Award, stated that he tries to pick up a lot of knowledge from his teammates, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, who play for the Qalandars.

“Shaheen and Haris are both international players and I get the opportunity to learn from them, “ Zaman Khan stated.

In the PSL 8 opener against Multan, Zaman bowled a fantastic final over, holding Multan to 15 runs in six deliveries while facing off against players like Khushdil Shah and seasoned West Indian hitter and T20 expert Kieron Pollard. The pacer’s valiant efforts enabled his team to defeat Multan by one run.

“Skipper enjoys it and gives me confidence”: Zaman Khan

The right-arm pacer bowled the same over that he did in the seventh PSL against Islamabad United, the reigning champions.

Zaman Khan responded when questioned about his ability to knock the fate-deciding over: “Whenever our red-ball season ends, we practice white-ball bowling, especially in the death overs, where we learn to bowl yorkers and slower ones. This helps in the match and the skipper enjoys it and gives me confidence.”

On Sunday, February 26, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, the fourth PSL 8 match between Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi will go place according to the original schedule.

The Qalandars, who are presently ranked third in the league table, have won two of the three games they have played. By winning three championships, Islamabad United will attempt to surpass Lahore Qalandars as the most successful team. Lahore Qalandars will try to make history by being the first team to win consecutive championships.

(You are the captain. All of your players are getting married, and your hair is turning grey. So when are you planning to get married?), the journalist asked.

“My hair was always white, and it is not because of the fact that I am thinking about marriage. See, when the time is right, marriage will happen. I am waiting for the time to come, and you should wait too.” Babar Azam said in a hilarious response that sent the whole hall laughing.

While Islamabad United amassed 220 for six against Quetta before bowling the opposition out for just 157 runs, Azam hammered 97 off 42 balls while hitting nine fours and eight sixes. “The position I bat at, you know the situation is quite different and more difficult. Either the score is about 40 for four or 180 or 160 for two, so then you need to just go and finish the match. But I am more inspired by Tim David. He hits big shots and I know and understand his batting role because I bat in the same position. Suryakumar often plays one down which is like top order,” Azam Khan explained.

Azam Khan single-handedly crushed Quetta Gladiators as Islamabad United extended its great run in the present Pakistan Super League (PSL).
