Mark Wood was the top performer for the English team in the match. He was among the three changes England made to their playing XI for the Headingley Test. With the ball, he bagged 5 wickets in the first innings and 2 wickets in the second innings. With the bat, he scored 24 runs off 8 balls and 16 runs off 8 balls. Overall, Mark Wood scored 40 off just 16 balls to win the Player of the Match award. His combined strike rate of 250 was the highest for anyone facing more than 10 balls in a single Test.

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes has gone past MS Dhoni in an elite list. After England completed the 251-run chase he surpassed Dhoni for most number of successful run chases where the target was over 250 in Tests.

Nice to get over the line and keep our hopes alive – Ben Stokes

Speaking after the game, England captain Ben Stokes was delighted to avoid the series defeat. He showered praise on the comeback men – Mark Wood and Chris Woakes – for their stellar performance in the match. Ben Stokes elaborated:

“Another down to the wire game. Nice to get over the line and keep our hopes alive. Won the toss, we could have batted and bowled. Looked a good wicket. Saw the way Mitch Marsh batted. Came in and took the game on. The outfield was on the quick side.

“We had Woody and Woakesy back in and they did well. We picked teams and look how they can impact us in the game. We try to see how they can be influential in the game. I didn’t realise that Woakes hasn’t played a Test for so long, he is Mr. Consistent. Having someone who can bat like him batting at 8 helps us. Hope he can do something similar when he plays next.”
