Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd has backed the IPL amid West Indies’ recent performance in the ICC World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe. Windies lost to Zimbabwe in their previous qualifier game putting their qualification chances into jeopardy.

On the back of West Indies’ loss against Zimbabwe, the club vs country debate has resurfaced once again. The same debate was talked about when India lost the WTC final against Australia at the Oval as well.

These Guys Know Their Worth: Clive Lloyd

“I think we went to Kerry Packer because we did not know our worth. These guys now know what they are worth. But I think that if IPL is such an important part of their lives, just give them a window so that they can play IPL. Yes, a window would be excellent, I think, because they are earning a good living. And do not forget, you are giving your best part, the best days of your life to this sport. So why not be paid for it” said Clive Lloyd.

Why Should Cricket Be Different: Clive Lloyd

“When Michael Jordan and all these footballers were earning millions per month, nobody said anything about it. Why cricket should be different?” the West Indies legend added.

The former skipper however pointed out that West Indies cricket should not suffer due to the domestic tournaments because players want to go to different T20 tournaments. This is where he asked his players to be dedicated to playing international cricket for the country.

“You cannot stop them from doing that. It gives them a good future. But the point is that they should not do this to the detriment of playing for their country or their nation. And we suffer because we are only five and a half million people. So if we groom twenty players and lose ten, it is like digging a hole to fill a hole. And I do not want that” he concluded saying.

West Indies play their last qualifier game against the Netherlands on Monday, June 26. They are currently placed third on the points table with four points from three games.
