India and ICC Tournaments have not been friends in the recent past. MS Dhoni won three major ICC titles during his nine-year tenure as India’s captain. However, since then, India have been waiting to win their next major ICC title and the home World Cup might bring an end to that wait.

Between 2014 and 2021, India have lost many knockout games either in the final or semi-final bringing an end to their World Cup campaign. They played almost flawless cricket in the buildup to the knockout games and could not keep their nerves in either the final or the semi-final.

The team has lost three major finals under Virat Kohli in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan and the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. They also lost the 2021 WTC final against the Kiwis proving the Blackcaps have been India’s biggest nemesis in the past.

After Virat Kohli stepped down as India’s captain across all formats, the story has been the same with Rohit Sharma. Under him, India lost the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final in a fairly one-sided contest. India are closing in on their making their second consecutive WTC final. They will be facing Australia in the final at the Oval later this year in June.

India had a fabulous campaign in the 2014 T20 World Cup beating the mighty Australians in the semifinal. They were now facing Sri Lanka in a repeat of the 2011 World Cup final. However, India were not upto the mark in that game. They scored a below-par 130 largely thanks to Virat Kohli’s 77. Yuvraj Singh’s 21-ball-11 drew a lot of criticism as MS DHonin just got to face seven balls in the semifinal.

Sri Lanka won the game with 11 balls to spare with Kumar Sangakkara scoring an unbeaten 52 to win the match for his side. He announced his international retirement post the 2015 ODI World Cup.
