The second ODI of the three-match series between KL Rahul-led India National Cricket Team and Steve Smith-led Australia National Cricket Team was held at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24.

India National Cricket Team won the match by 99 runs as per DLS method to seal the series. Australia needed to chase 317 runs from 33 overs to win the match, which they failed to do and got bundled out for 217.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to field first in the match. They made three major changes to their playing XI as captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis were replaced by Josh Hazlewood, Alex Carey, and Spencer Johnson. India, on the other hand, made a sole change as Prasidh Krishna replaced Jasprit Bumrah, who was unavailable for the game.

Opening the innings for India, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad were not able to build a good partnership like the first game as the latter fell for 8 in the 4th over.

Still, India got off to a flying start as Gill alongside Shreyas Iyer toyed with the Australian bowlers. They made full use of the short boundaries at the Holkar Cricket Stadium and played an attacking brand of cricket.

Both Iyer and Gill smashed the bowlers all over the park and laid the foundation for a mammoth total. However, they got a little slow when they entered the 80s and a period of 5-over came where no boundaries were hit.

Iyer completed his century off 86 balls and Gill reached the landmark off 92 balls. The duo soon got out after hitting centuries as Iyer was back in the hut after scoring 105 off 90 balls and Gill walked back to the dugout after scoring 104 off 97 balls.

After that, KL Rahul (52) and Ishan Kishan (31) continued the momentum by playing explosive cricket and together they smashed some sensational boundaries. Following the dismissal of Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav came to bat and he looked at his absolute best. He smashed 72 runs off 37 balls, with 6 fours and 6 sixes, to help India post 399/5 on the board.

Chasing the huge target, Australia were off to a poor start as they lost Matthew Short and Steven Smith in the second over itself, which was bowled by Prasidh Krishna.

However, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the ship by adding 80 runs together. But once they got out, Australia lost wickets at regular intervals and they were reduced to 140/8.

In the end, Sean Abbott showcased a batting masterclass and added 77 runs in 44 balls with Josh Hazlewood, but it wasn’t enough for the win as they were bowled out for 217. For India Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bagged three wickets each while Prasidh Krishna bagged two wickets and Mohammed Shami got one.
