Continuing his fine form in ODIs, Shubman Gill, on Sunday (September 24), scored an impressive century against Australia in the second ODI at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
The right-handed batsman missed the chance to score a century in the first ODI after being dismissed for 74. However, he did not make any mistakes in Indore and scored yet another ODI century this year.
The India opener scored 104 runs off 97 balls with the help of six fours and 4 sixes. Shreyas Iyer also scored a century, scoring 105 off 90 balls as he and Shubman Gill added 200 runs for the second wicket.
A blazing fifty from Suryakumar Yadav then helped India post a huge total of 399 for 5 in 50 overs. Suryakumar scored an unbeaten 72 off just 37 balls with the help of 6 fours and as many sixes. In reply, Australia were all out for 217 runs while chasing a revised total of 317 runs in 33 overs.
Virender Sehwag unhappy with Shubman Gill:
While Shubman Gill scored a century and created a plethora of records with his knock, legendary batsman Virender Sehwag was not happy with him. The reason was the youngster’s failure to convert his century into a big score.
“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn’t have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn’t have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” Virender Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
Speaking further, Sehwag said that Shubman Gill had the opportunity to score a double century too. More than 15 overs were left when the opener was dismissed and he did have the opportunity to score his second double-century in the 50-over format.
“When you are in form and you are scoring runs then don’t throw your wicket away. When he got out, there were 18 overs still remaining. Had he played for 9-10 overs more he could have completed his second double hundred. Rohit Sharma scored three double hundreds. He had the opportunity today. A 200 has been scored at this venue by a player named Sehwag, because it is that sort of a track,” he said.
Meanwhile, the third and final ODI is scheduled to be played on Wednesday (September 27) at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
