Former Indian Cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra commented on the batting of Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill during the 2nd ODI against Australia.

He said that during the start of the partnership between the two, it seemed like Shreyas Iyer batted like Shubman Gill, while Gill batted like Shreyas. Chopra made this statement while referring to Shreyas’ explosive start and Gill’s relatively subdued inning at the start of the partnership.

India beat Australia by 99 runs [DLS method] and lead the series 2-0 in the 3 ODI series. Australia won the toss and invited India to bat first in the second ODI match in Indore on Sunday. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was the second-highest scorer in the first ODI could not continue his form and got out by scoring 8 runs.

India was 16/1 in 3.4 overs and then Shreyas Iyer, who was returning from injury, scored a brilliant 105 runs in 90 balls and also stood a 200 runs partnership with Shubman Gill and helped India to reach 399 which is the highest ODI score against Australia.

Shubman Gill continued his red-hot form and scored a brilliant 104 runs in 97 balls. While chasing the big target of 400, Australia lost its first two wickets at a score of nine before the rain came. Set a revised DLS target of 317 in 33 overs, Australia were all out for 217 in 28.2 overs.

Aakash Chopra Lauds Shreyas Iyer

Aakash Chopra analyzed Shreyas Iyer’s crucial inning in a recent video on his YouTube channel and said:

“He was under pressure. You isolate yourself and say that you don’t care what people say and why. But as humans, you are not immune to everything that is happening outside. Things do fall on your ears and there is some pressure. But the team was convinced that Shreyas is our main player and we are going to stick with him.”

“The way he hit a shot over covers at the start and then played those drives, he was brilliant. He was, as we say, in total control. It was not like there were edges or catches were being dropped. There was nothing of that sort. He batted very well. For some time at the start, it seemed like Shreyas Iyer was Shubman Gill and Shubman Gill is Shreyas Iyer, who is coming back from injury,” Aakash added.

Shreyas Iyer’s form was questionable as to whether he should be in the playing 11. He slammed his critics by scoring a brilliant century and almost sealed the number 4 position for India.
