Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is fresh off a three-wicket spell against Australia in the second ODI in Indore. He is likely to play in the third ODI as well with Axar Patel not a part of the side that has travelled to Rajkot for the game.

Axar Patel’s injury made the selectors think about giving Ashwin an opportunity in the series and he has grabbed it with both hands so far. Skipper Rohit Sharma also said that he was constantly in touch with Ashwin regarding the possibility of including him in the World Cup squad.

Axar is recovering well and the team management expects him to be fit in time for the World Cup. He is at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. However, he is yet to regain full fitness. This is where Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Ashwin has a chance to make it to the World Cup squad.

I Think He Has Made The Cut For The World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar On Ravichandran Ashwin

“The way he has bowled in the last two matches, I think he has made the cut for the World Cup squad. If there is even a hint of doubt on Axar Patel’s fitness, whether he’ll be completely fit for the entire World Cup; because any injury can be a recurring one and he needs to be careful. If the team management think they can’t take that chance with Axar because it is the World Cup and everyone wants their squad to be 100 percent fit; so if there are any doubts then Ashwin could make a comeback” Gavaskar said to Star Sports.

“He has bowled exceptionally well in the last 3-4 overs he bowled in Mohali, then the way he utilised the carrom ball in Indore. So if there are any doubts on Axar, Ashwin will come back into the team” Gavaskar further added.

Axar Patel is a part of India’s World Cup squad as of now. However, the management can make changes to the squad till September 28 if they want to.
