WTC Final: Revealed – Why Umpires Didn’t Use Soft Signal To Make A Decision On Shubman Gill’s Controversial Dismissal

During the run chase of 444 runs, India were off to a blistering start as they scored 41 runs for the loss of no wickets. Shubman Gill was slowly getting into the groove. Shubman Gill was seen taking calculative risks and was keen on rotating the strike.

On the very first delivery of the 8th over there was chaos as the 3rd umpire Richard Kettleborough gave the decision as out despite there being some controversial visuals that depicted that the ball had touched the ground and Gill was dismissed on 18 runs in 19 balls after a spectacular catch taken by Cameron Green at the gully. Notably, the soft signal decision was not given by the on-field umpire and the decision was instantly sent upstairs.

Revealed- Why was soft signal wasn’t used during Shubman Gill’s catch decision

Now the reason behind the non-usage of the soft signal has been revealed. Notably, ICC has removed the concept of soft signal and now umpires won’t have any authority while referring the decision to the 3rd umpire as these changes have been made in May. Sourav Ganguly head of the Men’s Cricket Committee had said that the soft signal used to confuse the 3rd umpire.

“Soft signals have been discussed at previous cricket committee meetings over the last couple of years, The committee deliberated this at length and concluded that soft signals were unnecessary and at times confusing since referrals of catches may seem inconclusive in replays,” said Sourav Ganguly.
