The duo stitched 41 runs for the opening partnership until Shubman Gill nicked one delivery from Scott Boland at the stroke of tea. The ball flew to Cameron Green in the gully and the lanky all-rounder plucked a one-handed stunner close to the ground. It seemed that ball touched the ground and the umpires went upstairs.

Ricky Ponting opened up about the controversial decision of Shubman Gill. He said that it was worth arguing and it had carried six-eight inches above the ground. Speaking to ICC, he said:

The ball went into his hand may be 6-8inches above the ground but the question I have got was did any part of the ball touch the ground just after it completed the catch. I am sure that’s what Rohit Sharma is arguing with the umpires;

“I am sure that’s why Shubman Gill is so disappointed. It had carried, six-eight inches above the ground; no doubt about that but did it then actually roll over and touch the top of the surface?”

WTC Final: Kumar Sangakkara And Ravi Shastri Share Their Verdict On Shubman Gill’s Controversial Dismissal

Kumar Sangakkara while talking about Shubman Gill’s dismissal said that in such cases umpires usually go not out. He explained:

“Yeah it’s about how you see it. He did catch the ball with fingers under the ball but if any part of the ball touches the ground it can be interpreted as helping the ball to stay in the hand and usually the umpires always go not out.”

Ravi Shastri also opened up about Shubman Gill’s controversial dismissal and said that umpire must have thought fingers were under but it wasn’t clear. He explained:

“The third umpire thought the fingers were under but the question is whether it rolled over after he completed the catch.”

After the wicket of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma batted well for his 43 runs knock before a false shot saw him back in the hut. Cheteshwar Pujara too looked good but he also played a false shot and was back in the hut for 27 runs.
