WTC Final: Sanjay Manjrekar And Brad Haddin Share Their Verdict On Shubman Gill’s Controversial Dismissal At The Oval On Day 4

Australia posted a challenging total of 444 runs as the Pat Cummins-led side declared the innings on 270-8. It seemed as if India’s openers Shubman Gill & Rohit Sharma were batting on a different track. Shubman Gill was keen on rotating the strike.

Rohit Sharma was seen playing a lot of innovative shots and most importantly played his natural attacking brand of cricket. At the end of the first 7 overs, India’s score was 41 runs for the loss of no wickets.

Scott Boland was bowling the 8th over, on the first delivery Gill gave the catch to the gully fielder, Cameron Green. The decision was sent to the 3rd umpire and no soft signal was given due to the recent change in the rules of the game.

The 3rd Umpire Richard Kettleborough gave the decision as out despite the visuals stating that the ball touched the ground. 3rd umpire gave the decision as out which raised a lot of eyebrows as the openers were shocked and Shubman Gill was out on 18 runs in 19 balls and struck 2 fours.

3rd umpire gets a lot of angles- Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar was having an interaction with ESPNcricinfo and said that in real-time, it seemed like a pretty brilliant catch and backed the umpire for his decision on Shubman Gill’s controversial catch.

“When you see it real-time, it is very important thing to see and something I have advocated to a lot of people about when there is a review for a low catch it goes upstairs to the TV umpire, they get a lot of angles and the frozen image is the one that really sets the cat among the pigeons,” said Sanjay Manjrekar.

“The viewers see the frozen image and see the leather touching the turf and then you think you know that’s not a catch. Leather touching the turf. In real-time, it looked like a pretty brilliant catch, just a nice motion. I can understand Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill looking at one image and think maybe there was some contact. But in the end, If you ask me if that was a catch, I’d say, yes, brilliant catch,” he added.

I thought it was a clean catch- Brad Haddin

Brad Haddin thought that the catch was a clean one and at the same time said that Green’s fingers were underneath the ball. Brad Haddin pointed out that in real-time, it seemed like a clean catch.

“I thought it was a clean catch and Green got his fingers underneath the ball. I like it in real time because if you slow it down too much and look at different frames, it can create a lot of doubt. I though Green got his fingers underneath the ball and took an outstanding catch.”
