Ravi Shastri, a former India head coach, believes that Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Rohit Sharma will be criticizing themselves for losing their wickets after playing excellent batting on Day 4 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.

India lost Shubman Gill for 18 at The Oval on Saturday, June 10, after the pair combined 41 for the opening stand. India was attempting to chase down 444. The second-wicket partnership was then 51 runs between the Indian captain and Cheteshwar Pujara (27). But both of them lost their wickets. While Nathan Lyon attempted a lap sweep and trapped Rohit’s leg before, Pujara attempted to uppercut Pat Cummins but edged the ball to the keeper.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri claimed that the Indian hitters lost a significant chance to score runs on the deck in a post-game interview with Star Sports.

“You know what’s amazed me though is the way that the pitch has behaved. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara will be kicking themselves for playing the shots that they played. They were poor shots when they were batting beautifully” Ravi Shastri said.

The former India player was confident that India was still in the game and capable of chasing down 280 runs on the last day of the Test match.

“Very much a possibility. This game shows us strange things. It has to be a world record chase” Ravi Shastri added.

“They have batted beautifully and scored quite easily”- Ravi Shastri

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri thinks that India’s first hour on Day 5 will be key as Australia dominated the WTC final. With the stinger gone, the pitch appears to have smoothed out, which makes hitting much simpler. If India is able to take quick runs to open Day 5, this may go to their advantage.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri said: “The pitch has eased out, the sting is gone, and it made batting a lot easier. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have been in no trouble whatsoever. They batted beautifully and scored quite easily. It is about coming out tomorrow and weathering the storm in the first hour, that will be crucial for me.”

India has Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease, both of whom contributed significantly to the team’s initial collapse. The team will be trying to capitalize on the opening two sessions and push for the objective as they did at the Gabba in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2020/21.
