Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh was dissatisfied with the third umpire’s decision to throw Shubman Gill out on day four of the WTC Final after Australia’s Cameron Green completed a contentious catch at the Oval.

Australia declared their innings at 270/8 on Saturday and gave India a victory target of 444. Rohit Sharma and Gill got the Indian team’s chase off to an excellent start, hitting 41 runs in just 7.2 overs.

However, at the stroke of tea on Day 4, Gill was given out in a contentious moment in the match. Gill was undone by the extra bounce on The Oval surface when the ball hit the shoulder of his bat while lunging forward in the opening delivery of Scott Boland’s eighth over. The ball landed in the slip cordon, where Cameron Green dived to his left and took a one-handed catch.

Green caught the ball with his fingertips in the air, but the debate centred on whether the ball actually reached the ground before the all-around player finished his dive.

Richard Kettleborough, the third umpire, took his time examining the catch from several perspectives. Before concluding that Green’s fingers were under the ball after the catch, the third umpire patiently waited and requested different viewpoints from the commentators.

“It should have been given not out” – Harbhajan Singh

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh recently provided his opinion on the matter in an interview with Star Sports. The former spinner Harbhajan Singh claimed that it was not on his mind and blamed the third umpire for making the decision despite the lack of solid proof.

“According to me, it’s not out. Why didn’t you zoom in at the moment where you should have zoomed in? It’s beyond my understanding. You have the technology, camera, and every single small thing that makes decision-making easy for you. But here the decision is only wrong,” Harbhajan Singh said.

“His (Cameron Green’s) two fingers weren’t placed on the ball which means the ball had touched down. When you weren’t sure whether the fingers touched the ball then it should have been given not out,” Harbhajan Singh added.

India has Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease, both of whom contributed significantly to the team’s initial collapse. The team will be trying to capitalize on the opening two sessions and push for the objective as they did at the Gabba in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2020/21.
