Shubman Gill’s dismissal in the eighth over of India’s second innings was a key moment of the WTC final on day 4. He added 1 41-run opening stand with skipper Rohit Sharma until he was controversially dismissed. India lost three quick wickets and were 93-3 when Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane joined hands. They took India to 163/4 at the end of the day’s play.

Shubman Gill’s dismissal raised a few eyebrows as it was not a clean catch from Cameron Green. There was enough evidence that Green had not caught the ball clean and that the ball hit the turf on the way to his hands. Green took the catch on his left hand and while he was diving the ball touched the ground again before the Aussie all-rounder threw the ball up and started celebrating.

Third umpire Richard Kettleborough ruled the decision in favor of the bowling team despite the replays having clear evidence that Green’s hands touched the ground and the ball bounced before getting into his hands. Since then, the Indian fan have been expressing their displeasure at the decision on Twitter. Even skipper Rohit Sharma and Gill himself were left unconvinced by the decision.

Meanwhile, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has urged the Indian team to get on with the game and not think about Gill’s dismissal and accept the decision that was made.

We Should Accept Third Umpire’s Decision: Rajeev Shukla On Shubmab Gill’s Dismissal

“We should not create a dispute over this. We should accept the decision of the Third umpire,” Rajeev Shukla told ANI.

Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (20*) are unbeaten at the crease having added an unbeaten 71-run stand. The experienced duo needs to shoulder the responsibility of possibly batting through the day and taking India close to the target. India are chasing a record 444 to win the WTC Final, the record chase ever in Test cricket history.

“Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli are batting well and if everyone plays safe we can chase down the target as the target is not that big,” Shukla further added.

Chasing 444 to win India are 164/3 at the end of day 4 requiring another 280 runs to win the WTC final.
