WTC Final: “Oval Track Was Not Fully Prepared For World Test Championship Final” – Mohammed Shami

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has made a huge comment heading into the final day of the ICC World Test Championship final at the Oval. Team India need another 280 runs to chase down 444 required to win the WTC final. India finished 163/3 at stumps on day 3 with Virat Kohli (44*) and Ajinkya Rahane (20*) unbeaten.

The Shami-led pace attack had to work hard to get 18 Australian wickets in the two innings. Australia declared their second innings at 270/8 leaving India to chase a mammoth 444 to win the final.

Shami at the post-match press conference said that the pitch at the Oval was not fully prepared for the World Test Championship final. In the process, he echoed the sentiments of teammate Shardul Thakur.

It Was Not Fully Ready: Mohammed Shami On Oval Pitch

“In Test matches, pitches tend to get slower as the game goes on. But I don’t think this pitch was fully prepared for World Test Championship final. It was not fully ready but day by day it does change in a Test match,” said Shami after stumps on day four.

The Indian pacer further said that India have a chance to make history if they manage to chase down the target on the fifth day. Chasing 444 to win, India are 163/4 and need another 280 runs to win the ICC World Test Championship final.

“Test matches should be decided on day five and in the last session. That is what called a proper Test. In the last four years, we have played well against Australia. Both have fought hard. We will have to bat well tomorrow” said Shami.

We Believe We Can With The Match: Mohammed Shami

India have won three back-to-back test series against Australia. They won the 2019-20 series and the 2020-21 series away from home. They also won the Border-Gavaskar trophy 2023 at home to make their way to their second WTC final on the trot. When asked if India can get the remaining runs Shami responded positively.

”We believe we can win the match. We have performed well overseas not just in England. We will come together to win this. 280 runs if you bat well it is gettable” Shami concluded saying.
