Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that Australian all-rounder Cameron Green failed to bat up to expectations in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final. Aakash Chopra described Cameron Green as a “work-in-progress” (WIP) cricketer in the longer format of the game.

Cameron Green scored 25 runs off 95 deliveries in Australia’s second inning at the oval on Saturday, June 10. The Pat Cummins-led team declared their innings at 270/8 on the penultimate day of the match. The Aussie team set up a mammoth target of 444 runs for India in the fourth innings.

He Is WIP As A Test Cricketer – Aakash Chopra

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted flaws in Cameron Green’s batting strategy in Australia’s second innings.

“Umesh Yadav gave a good start. It was a good ball that went away, Marnus Labuschagne got an edge and he got out. Now Alex Carey was there with Cameron Green. Interestingly enough, Cameron Green didn’t bat at all the way he can or is known for,” Aakash Chopra said.

“He had made up his mind that he will not score runs at all and will play extremely defensively. Risk mitigation – it was a slightly flawed strategy in my opinion because you were already ahead in the game. That’s why Ravindra Jadeja ultimately dismissed him. Cameron Green’s knock told me that he is WIP as a Test cricketer,” he added.

Green played with a defensive approach against Indian bowlers during his knock. The right-handed batter got bowled while leaving Ravindra Jadeja’s delivery.  Jadeja bowled a delivery outside the leg stump, which hit Green’s body and went on to hit stumps.

Alex Carey Batted Amazingly Well – Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Australian wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey for forming crucial partnerships with Mitchell Starc. The former Indian opener said that Indian bowlers were ineffective against the duo with the softened Duke ball.

“Alex Carey batted amazingly well. He didn’t play a single reverse sweep this time. Mitchell Starc was there alongside him. Mitchell Starc hadn’t scored runs for a long time but he has finally done that against us,” he further added.

“Alex Carey scored 66 and Mitchell Starc scored 40-odd alongside him. In the end, Pat Cummins also got out. Mohammad Shami had wickets in his account. An important thing that was seen was that when the Dukes ball got old, the seam doesn’t get merged with the leather, but it gets soft, and so batting became easy,” he concluded.

Carey and Starc added a 93-run partnership for the 7th wicket in their second innings. Carey scored an unbeaten 66 runs, while Starc added 41 crucial runs lower down the order. Jadeja picked up three wickets for 58 runs in his bowling.
