Following India’s heavy defeat to Australia in the one-off WTC Final, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire for a three-match series format for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in the next cycle.

Rohit Sharma believes that having a three-match series instead of a single Test match would be more ideal and provide a fairer opportunity for teams to compete for the coveted title.

India’s disappointment in the WTC final was reminiscent of their loss to New Zealand in the previous cycle’s final two years ago. Australia, on the other hand, added yet another trophy to their illustrious collection, dominating the match from start to finish.

India struggled to match Australia’s first-innings total of 469 runs and 270 runs in the 2nd innings and were eventually bowled out for 296 and 234 runs in their two innings that saw them lose the game by 209 runs.

During the post-match press conference, Rohit Sharma voiced his thoughts on the format of the WTC final, expressing his desire for a three-match series to determine the champion.

Rohit Sharma emphasized the team’s hard work and resilience but lamented the fact that they had only one opportunity to showcase their skills in the final. He believes that a three-match series format would be more suitable for such an important occasion in the WTC cycle.

“I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle.”

Rohit Sharma’s Request For 3-Match WTC Final Unlikely To Be Accepted

However, the implementation of a three-match series for the WTC final seems unlikely in the near future. The current schedule is already packed with various cricket events, and accommodating a three-match series would pose significant challenges for the host nation.

Wasim Khan, the ICC’s general manager of cricket, recently mentioned that while they are constantly reviewing the structure, the feedback from member nations suggests that the current format, consisting of the league and a one-off final, is functioning satisfactorily.

Although Rohit Sharma’s wish for a three-match series may not be fulfilled immediately, his suggestion opens up discussions about potential modifications to the WTC format. The desire to ensure a more comprehensive and competitive final series is a valid concern that can be further explored in the future.

As the cricketing world reflects on the outcome of the WTC final, it remains clear that the tournament holds immense importance for participating teams. The aspiration to continuously improve the format and make it more captivating and balanced is a testament to the passion and dedication of players and fans alike.
