WTC Final: “That Is What Probably Cost Us The Game” – Rohit Sharma On Big Guns Not Firing Against Australia In World Test Championship Final

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opened up about the disappointing 209-run loss they suffered in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) against Australia at the Oval, England. He admitted that experienced players not firing cost them the game.

India were at the receiving end of the thrashing at the hands of Australia in the ultimate. They were outplayed by the Pat Cummins-led side, who batted and bowled staggering well, making the Rohit Sharma-led look clueless on all 5 days of the game.

India’s big guns yet again failed to deliver on the big stage, which potentially was the main reason behind their 209-run loss. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja failed to score a half-century and were the main reason behind India suffering a collapse.

Rohit Sharma said that senior players cannot be taught how to bat as they have stepped into these conditions. He highlighted that he doesn’t want to be critical about it. Speaking to reporters after the ICC World Test Championship Final, he said:

“Now we have played two finals. You cannot really teach them how to bat in the little time that you have before the game. It’s all about getting yourself ready and how you can do that, it is completely up to you. I don’t want to be too critical about it – the reason I say that is because when we were here last time in (2021), a lot of the senior batters actually put their hand up and got us ahead in the series.”

WTC Final: Everybody prepared really well in the little time that we had, that is all you can do,” Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma admitted that big players not playing well cost them the game but he won’t call it a lapse of concentration as everybody gave their best shot. He explained:

“Whether we played in Australia, we played in England, but yeah, like you said, this one-off game, if you’re mentally not there, you can lose a game. You know, and that is exactly what happened. We honestly wanted to give our best shot. Everybody prepared really well in the little time that we had, that is all you can do.

“But yeah, when you have in your top six, you know, five or six batters who have quite experience played in these conditions before and couldn’t go on to get big runs and that is what probably cost us the game. But I won’t call it a lapse of concentration.” He concluded.
