Sunil Gavaskar, a former cricketer for India, has harshly criticized Rahul Dravid’s attitude to India’s loss to Australia in the World Test Championship final on Sunday. Gavaskar lamented Team India’s performance and stressed that no one should be exempt from criticism.

Dravid was asked about the dropping batting averages of Indian players who played in foreign conditions after the team’s 209-run defeat. The current head coach responded by saying that a decline like this in averages is typical of any team playing away from home.

Gavaskar, however, disregarded Dravid’s remark, claiming that the topic only concerned the performance of the Indian players and that it was useless to examine the averages of players from other teams. Gavaskar continued by saying that a thorough self-evaluation is necessary to determine exactly what went wrong for India.

“It doesn’t matter what the others’ averages are, we are talking about an Indian team now, the Indian team’s average is falling, something has to be done. The batting has been the one which has caused us problems every time we go overseas. So why is it happening? That is something that we need to look at. Why is it happening that our batting, which bats so well in India, you know, they are Dadas in India, when they go overseas, some of them falter, not everybody falters, some of them falter,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“Honest self-assessment is an absolute necessity after this”- Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioned whether the coaching and analysis being offered are adequate to address the areas that need improvement and to reduce mistakes. Gavaskar emphasized the value of an honest evaluation of one’s performance following a setback and emphasized that it is not just about winning or losing, but also how a team loses that matters. He expressed his dissatisfaction by calling India’s performance in the WTC final a capitulation.

“Is the level of coaching not what you require? Is there not much analysis about areas where you lack? Honest self-assessment is an absolute necessity after this. One team is going to win, one is going to lose. It’s how you lose, that’s the thing. That hurts” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“We have also been knocked out. And we have been miserable. You cannot say that the current lot is beyond criticism. You have to be analytical about what happened out there. Was our approach right? Was our selection right? You can’t brush this under the carpet,” Sunil Gavaskar further said.
