Shubman Gill has come under fire from former Australian captains Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer for his social media posts in the wake of his contentious dismissal during the World Twenty20 Final match against Australia at the Oval.

In India’s second innings of the game, Gill was at the center of a decision that divided the cricketing world. The 23-year-old and captain Rohit Sharma gave India a solid start in the run chase on day four, chasing 444 to win.

The extra bounce at The Oval surface, though, cost Gill in the first delivery of Scott Boland’s eighth over, as the ball hit the bat and soared to the slips, where Cameron Green dove to his left and collected a one-handed catch.

Although Green had the ball in his grasp while his fingers were still in the air, the big discussion was whether or not it had landed before the all-around player finished his dive. To the dismay of Shubman Gill and the Indian spectators, third umpire Richard Kettleborough made the difficult decision to rule in favor of the Australians after much consideration.

After the incident, Shubman Gill wrote a few comments about it on social media. First, he posted a screenshot of Green’s contentious catch on Instagram and used the ‘applauding’ emoji. The Australian all-rounder looked to touch the ground as he was about to complete the catch in a photo of Cameron Green’s catch that the Indian opener Gill also shared.

“Shubman Gill could end up getting a fine or even a suspension for his jibe”- Ricky Ponting

The former Australian captain, Ponting, felt that Shubman Gill didn’t need to take matters into his own hands because many fans and pundits had already expressed their discontent with the decision and that Shubman Gill would wind up with a fine or possibly a punishment for his remark about the third umpire.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting continued: “Something is definitely going to come of that. There will be some sort of fine, or maybe even a suspension. That is a direct crack at the umpire for the decision that they made. You can’t do that. The whole world was going to do that for him â€æ he didn’t need to say a word.”

Langer added that Shubman Gill’s message was a little careless and demonstrated inexperience when discussing the issue on social media, as reported by Fox Cricket.

“Oof the challenge now of a modern-day cricketer is there’s so much social media,” the former Australian coach Justin Langer said on Channel 7.

“The Shubman Gill tweet I think is a bit irresponsible and shows some inexperience. This is the world we live in with social media” Langer added.
