Australia skipper Aaron Finch could manage only 5 runs in the T20 World Cup final as he was dismissed by New Zealand pacer Trent Boult, via a terrific catch from Daryl Mitchell in the deep.

After Aaron Finch had thumped Boult for a straight boundary after giving a charge down, Boult went short and kept it outside the off-stump asking Aaron Finch to fetch it. The Aussie skipper obliged and gave his everything in a pull shot, which he couldn’t connect and top-edged it on the leg side.

Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand’s hero of the semi-final who had scored 11 runs in the final, was positioned at the deep square leg fence. He came running to his left, towards the mid-wicket region. Mitchell slid and grabbed the ball neatly to complete a brilliant catch.

Australia lose Finch early in chase of 173

Chasing 173, Australia lost their captain, Aaron Finch, for just 5 to Trent Boult. David Warner, however, kept up with his attacking instincts and stroked two fours to Southee before hitting the veteran seamer for a gigantic six. Mitchell Marsh clattered Adam Milne for a maximum and two boundaries. Australia finished the powerplay at 43/1.

After being asked to bat first, New Zealand got off to a quick start from Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell. Guptill creamed the off-side boundary and Mitchell launched Maxwell down the ground for the first six of the innings.

Josh Hazlewood broke the 28-run opening stand; he and Pat Cummins kept things tight as New Zealand ended the powerplay at 32/1.

A couple of tight overs followed before Kane Williamson whacked Mitchell Marsh for two boundaries to release some pressure. The Kiwi skipper upped the ante with three fours off Mitchell Starc before slamming Maxwell for two hits over deep mid-wicket and brought up his fifty off 32 balls. Guptill, however, holed out in the deep off Adam Zampa for 28 runs off 35 balls.

Glenn Phillips smacked Zampa for a six and four, before Williamson handed Starc a nightmarish over, taking the speedster for 22 runs!

Hazlewood pulled things back with wickets of Phillips and Williamson, who scored 85 runs from 48 balls. Neesham and Tim Seifert took 23 runs off the last two overs as the Kiwis posted 172/4.
