Australia finally have got hold of their first T20 World Cup trophy as they defeated New Zealand in the final by 8 wickets. Blazing fifties from Mitchell Marsh and David Warner headlined for Australia in their run-chase after Kane Williamson’s stunning 85.

Chasing 173, Australia lost their captain, Aaron Finch, for just 5 to Trent Boult. David Warner, however, kept up with his attacking instincts and stroked two fours to Southee before hitting the veteran seamer for a gigantic six. Mitchell Marsh clattered Adam Milne for a maximum and two boundaries. Australia finished the powerplay at 43/1.

Marsh slogged Mitchell Santner for a maximum, and Warner thwacked two fours and a six to Ish Sodhi. Both of them clobbered Neesham for a six each with Warner bringing up his fifty off 34 balls.

Warner, though, was castled by Boult for 53 off 38 balls. Sodhi, however, couldn’t provide support from the other end as he leaked 16 runs in the next over, when he was also smoked down the ground by Marsh who raised his fifty from 31 balls.

Glenn Maxwell started off briskly, pulling away three fours and a six to bring the required runs to 24 from the last four overs. More hits followed and both took Australia over the line with 7 balls to spare. Jubilation for Australia as New Zealand suffered another World Cup final loss.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, New Zealand got off to a quick start from Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell. Guptill creamed the off-side boundary and Mitchell launched Maxwell down the ground for the first six of the innings.

Josh Hazlewood broke the 28-run opening stand; he and Pat Cummins kept things tight as New Zealand ended the powerplay at 32/1.

A couple of tight overs followed before Kane Williamson whacked Mitchell Marsh for two boundaries to release some pressure. The Kiwi skipper upped the ante with three fours off Mitchell Starc before slamming Maxwell for two hits over deep mid-wicket and brought up his fifty off 32 balls. Guptill, however, holed out in the deep off Adam Zampa for 28 runs off 35 balls.
