Aaron Finch felt extremely proud after leading Australia to their maiden T20 World Cup title when they defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets in the final in Dubai on Sunday.

Australia chased down 173 with an over to spare courtesy of blazing fifties from Mitchell Marsh and David Warner after Kane Williamson’s stunning 85-run knock.

Australia, who lost to England in the 2010 T20 World Cup final, now have their hands on the trophy which has eluded them since 2007, and Aaron Finch is the captain to bring it to the Land Down Under.

“This is huge. To be the first Australian team to be able to do it. So proud. We knew our backs were against the wall. We had some great individual performances, some great team performances,” Aaron Finch said at the post-match presentation.

Can’t believe people wrote Warner off: Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch said that he was surprised by people questioning David Warner’s form. Warner returned as the Man of the Tournament as he ended up as Australia‘s leading run-scorer – and second only to Babar Azam – after scoring 289 runs at an average of 48, while striking at 146. He struck three fifties in the tournament, including a crucial knock of 53 runs off 38 balls in the final.

Along with Warner, the Aussie skipper lauded the roles of Adam Zampa throughout the tournament for his consistent wicket-taking ability in the middle-overs. Mitch Marsh was the Man of the Final as he smashed 77 runs off 50 balls. Aaron Finch also commended Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis for their heist in the semi-final.

“Can’t believe people wrote him off saying he was done (Warner). That’s when he plays his best cricket. Was almost like poking the bear. The player of the tournament for me (Zampa). Mitch Marsh – what a way to start his innings today. Wade coming into this game with an injury cloud but got a job done. Stoinis did the business,” the Aussie skipper added.

New Zealand now have lost the 2009 Champions Trophy final, 2015 ODI World Cup final and the 2021 T20 World Cup final – all to Australia.
