According to former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya, teams don’t require exceptional individuals to win T20 matches, but decent players may still contribute to a team victory if they play well together.

The 53-year-old Sanath Jayasuriya, who contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s victory in the 1996 ODI World Cup (221 runs and seven wickets), believes the Lankans would do well in the forthcoming T20 World Cup, which will take place in Australia from October 16 to November 13.

You Don’t Need To Have Outstanding Players: Sanath Jayasuriya

Many experts didn’t predict Sri Lanka’s victory in the recently held Asia Cup, where they lost to Afghanistan in the opening match before shocking India and Pakistan to go on and win the tournament for the fifth time, but opening great Sanath Jayasuriya from the cricket-mad nation didn’t seem surprised.

“I wasn’t really surprised. We have quite a good bunch of cricketers. It’s the right time they peaked, you know. They lost the first game, anybody can lose a game and come back.

So, they lost the first game and realized what went wrong. They worked hard on their individual game and performed as a team. You don’t need to have outstanding players. They are good players who did well as a team,” Jayasuriya said on Wednesday.

The two-time national top selector for Lanka mentioned the following while discussing the team’s strong points: “They’re playing good cricket. That’s all you need. If you play quality cricket, results will come.”

He believed it was inappropriate to draw comparisons to his renowned 1996 World Cup-winning team.

“Any comparison is out. As long as they play their own game, do their basics right, they’ll enjoy their cricket,” stressed the 52-year-old, while batting for Sri Lanka tourism at an event here.

Sanath Jayasuriya Backs Sri Lanka To Do Well In T20 World Cup 2022

Even the “Marauder from Matara” wasn’t prepared to pick his T20 World Cup finalists in Australia, but he was willing to support the Lankans, who must first compete in the qualifiers, to succeed in the major competition.

“Sri Lanka will definitely do well,” he said. “T20 cricket is a fast game, it’s a team game. Our boys are playing good cricket. Whoever’s doing well that particular day is going to win the game,” he felt.

After the island nation was forced to give up on hosting the recent Asia Cup, which was later conducted in UAE, due to a severe economic crisis, Sanath Jayasuriya is optimistic that high-profile cricket would return to his country now that conditions are better.

“If you see the last few months, things have been really good and getting better. It will get better. The new government is working on it. So, I hope that they’ll do the right things (for the country) to recover fast.

Our tourism minister (Harin Fernando) is working really hard to make sure that we do the best for our country,” he said.

He reiterated: “Things are fine now. There’s no issue. Don’t take the Asia Cup as an example. It was a totally different time from now. Everything has settled down in Sri Lanka now. We will stage the Lanka Premier League in December. I hope the Indian will travel to Lanka to watch it,” he revealed.

Sanath Jayasuriya Promoting Sri Lankan Tourism

Sanath Jayasuriya, who has been designated the brand ambassador for Sri Lankan tourism, made time out of his hectic schedule to attend a news conference to promote tourism in Sri Lanka, which he highlighted was putting its crisis behind. Jayasuriya is presently in India to play in a few tournaments for retired players.

“Things are getting better. Everyone knows what we went through 3-4 months ago. Now, it’s time for us to rebuild the country. So, that’s why I joined this honorary job-it’s not a paid job. The idea is to promote Sri Lanka as a tourism destination, to help our people to come out of this situation.

Since we depend a lot on tourism, people like us need to support it. People have suffered enough. Now, they need to come out of this situation. The tourism sector is the most important one for my island. So, I’m promoting it. We need to see the positive side of Sri Lanka now. Anyone can visit my country.

Things are going in the right direction. We need the support of the Indian media. That’s very important. What happened is history now. We can’t sit and keep talking about that. We need to move forward now,” Jayasuriya said.

Virat Kohli

Former India National Cricket Team player Sanjay Manjrekar feels that the power game of the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli is back and he is trusting his power game.

Virat Kohli had a stellar run in the Asia Cup 2022 as he smashed 276 runs in 5 games at an average of 92.00 and a strike rate of 147.59, including one century and two half-centuries. He failed to replicate his performance in the first two T20Is against Australia. However, in the third T20I, he showed a batting masterclass and helped India complete the run-chase to win the game by 6 wickets and the series by 2-1.

Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli had an outstanding 104-run partnership in the 3rd T20I. Suryakumar Yadav got out in the 14th over after smashing amazing 69 runs off 36 balls, including 5 fours and 5 sixes. Virat Kohli scored good 63 runs off 48 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes, before getting out in the final over.

Speaking on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’, Manjrekar talked about Kohli’s recent batting performance and said:

“See, right from the Asia Cup every match that he got runs, not just the runs, there was some improvement coming. I think the power game is back, he’s trusting his power game. There was a time when he was getting runs but his power game was not coming at his beck and call, that is starting to happen. He’s dispatching good balls for big boundaries and sixes.”

This is a guy who’s damn self-confident and drives himself to excellence – Sanjay Manjrekar on Virat Kohli

Former India National Cricket Team player further said that Kohli gained his confidence back during his stint in the Asia Cup 2022.

“It’s all about confidence, this is a guy who’s damn self-confident and drives himself to excellence but for long-time runs weren’t coming and his confidence was tender. But during the Asia Cup, slowly and steadily, certain things start to happen, the pull shots came in, and the sixes started going more into the stands than just going over the rope as it was going in the IPL.

“So, the pieces falling back to frame the perfect picture. Now it’s all about putting all these kinds of performances in the main event,” he added further.

Legendary Sri Lanka National Cricket Team batter Mahela Jayawardene believes that the Pakistan National Cricket Team skipper Babar Azam, who has been going through a lean patch, will soon make a strong comeback.

Babar Azam, who is the No.1 ranked batter in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings and No.3 ranked batter in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings as well as ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, struggled for runs in the Asia Cup 2022.

| ICC Teams  Rankings | ICC Players Rankings

In the 15th edition of the tournament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Babar registered scores of 10, 9, 14, 0, 30, and 5. Overall, he scored only 68 runs in 6 games at an average of 11.33 and a strike rate of 107.93 with a top score of 30, which came against Sri Lanka in the final Super 4 stage game of the mega event.

Meanwhile, Mahela Jayawardene reckons that the poor form of Babar is definitely a concern for Team Pakistan as he has played a big role in the team’s success over the years.

“The way Babar has been batting the last two years, for him to have a tournament like that is a concern. But I think he is still a quality player,” Jayawardene told host Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review.

“Probably the occasion being, you know, part of an Asia Cup, and not that often that India-Pakistan play each other as well. So maybe the whole pressure got to him a little bit, I would say. But he is still a quality player.

“Pakistan did miss him with the bat because Rizwan and him at the top are a very, very consistent opening pair. The success of Pakistan over the last two years has been on that foundation, where all the big-hitters come in the middle and they (Babar and Rizwan) give that platform and they take it on.

“That’s something that they missed, but all good players go through some lean patch. I’m sure he will go back and go through his processes and come back stronger,” he further said.

Sri Lanka legend was of the opinion that the bowlers have still not figured out Babar Azam. Instead, he pinpointed the occasion as a factor in the Pakistan captain’s poor form.

“Not really I think, there were a couple of good balls that caught him out in this competition and a couple of soft dismissals, which can happen,” Jayawardene said.

“It’s just the occasion, the conditions and all that. You take him away from this tournament and put him in another tournament, and he will come back strongly – the quality is always there. Babar is that kind of a batter – he will go through that process vigorously and make sure that he comes back stronger,” he added.

Going into a World Cup, forget about captaincy – Mahela Jayawardene’s advice to Babar Azam

Jayawardene further said that the team management will have to make sure that they don’t put extra pressure on Babar and he should be confident and relaxed heading into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. He also advised Babar to separate captaincy and batting. He elaborated:

“When you have a quality player like that, try and not put pressure on him. I’m sure there would have been a lot of discussion about his form in the Asia Cup and all that. But leading into the World Cup, you want your best player to be confident and relaxed, going into the World Cup.”

“So as long as they are not putting undue pressure on him, that’s the important thing. Being the captain and being the best batsman in your team, it is not an easy task. That’s something that he has to live up to.”

“Going into a World Cup, forget about his captaincy and all that – be the batsman that he can be, and then be the captain that he needs to be out there on the field,” he said.

“These two responsibilities have to be managed separately, and that’s key to being a good player and then being a captain of the team.”

Naseem Shah

Mahela Jayawardene was highly impressed with the performance of the young Pakistan National Cricket Team right-arm pacer Naseem Shah in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022, where he bagged 7 wickets. He stated:

“I’ve been following Naseem for a while now. Obviously, they have used him a lot in red-ball cricket, in Test match cricket because of his pace. They did not back him too much with the accuracy with the white-ball format but lately, with a lot of cricket being played, he has come of age and the control that he showed, especially with the new ball, picking up wickets … that’s the key element.

Sri Lanka legend also said that facing Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi in the Australian conditions, where the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 is set to be held, will be a nightmare for a few opening batters. He elaborated:

“That Pakistan attack will look much stronger with Shaheen Afridi back as well, and the way Haris Rauf bowled. He bowled quickly. With the two youngsters, they’ve got a really, really good pace unit. And Naseem has been brilliant, I was really impressed by the way he went about things. The skills, especially bringing the ball back into the right-handers, the way he swung the ball with that kind of pace.

“In Australian conditions, those guys will be a handful. Especially for quite a few opening batsmen, it will be a nightmare if Shaheen and Naseem bowl in tandem from both ends.”

India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly one of the most successful T20I skippers of all time. However, the former Australia National Cricket Team left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson believes that it was under the leadership of Virat Kohli that the Men In Blue changed their focus in the T20I format.

Rohit took over as T20I captain following Kohli’s decision to step down as T20I skipper after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. Since becoming full-time captain, the 35-year-old has won 14 out of 18 games. Overall, Rohit-led India have won 31 out of 39 T20Is.

Meanwhile, Johnson said that Kohli, who recently scored his 71st international century, changed the focus of Team India in the T20I format under his leadership.

“It is good for India when their best player can make runs and keep the side confident. He ( Kohli) is that player who changed the focus of the team when he took on the captaincy. The team will be happy that he is scoring runs,” Johnson said in an interview with news agency Asian News International (ANI) in reference to Kohli’s century against Afghanistan.

Johnson further said that the India National Cricket Team players are used to playing big games thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and added that the Men In Blue can perform well in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

“When it comes to World Cup, you just enjoy the moment. You need to focus, they are all big games. Indians are used to playing big games because of IPL, playing in front of large crowds with a lot of pressure. I think all that stuff (Asia Cup performance) will be behind them,” he added.

Australia National Cricket Team Test skipper Pat Cummins has said that he didn’t follow the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022, where Sri Lanka won, but he saw that the modern-day batting great Virat Kohli scored his 71st international century in the tournament.

Kohli was in top-notch form in the Asia Cup 2022 and he finished as the second highest run-getter in the multi-nation tournament. He smashed 276 runs in five matches, including two fifties and a sensational century.

Cummins, who will lead Australia’s bowling attack in the upcoming tour of India, said that getting Kohli out will be a challenge for the Aussies.

“To be totally honest, I didn’t see any of that tournament. I think Sri Lanka won? Honestly, I didn’t see any of it. I saw Virat Kohli, I think he scored a hundred, yeah he’s a class player, he was always going to return to form at some point in time. He’s going to be a challenge this next week,” Cummins said on Sunday while replying to a Hindustan Times query.

The Australia tour of India 2022 consists of a three-match T20I series that will be played on September 20, September 23 and September 25 in Mohali, Nagpur and Hyderabad.

“I think a lot of games in India are played at a different pace as compared to Australia, the boundaries are normally a bit smaller. I think you need to adapt really quickly, you will have some days where the wicket is a bit slower, then cutters and those types of things are really important for the bowlers.

“So, everyone here has played a lot in India and everyone understands it. It is a format you have to be up for, and if it does not work on the day, then you need to move on quickly from it,” he added.

While talking about skipper Aaron Finch, who recently retired from ODIs, Cummins said that the veteran opener is in a good space.

“Just the normal Aaron Finch, he has been great. Had a bit of a chat with him, and he said he’s in a good space. Even in the ODIs, he knew it was time in his own mind. He seems fantastic, it was only 12 months ago that he led us to a T20 World Cup victory so he is raring to go, and he will be a key player as he always is.”

Pakistan announced the 15-man squad on Thursday for the T20 World Cup, which will begin in October. The Pakistan Cricket Board made minor changes to the Asia Cup squad. Babar Azam will be the team, and Shadab Khan will be his deputy.

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was disappointed with the team selection, saying they failed to address the middle-order issues exposed in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022.

Apart from the middle-order concerns, the ‘Rawalpindi Express’ also questioned Babar Azam’s batting and captaincy after the Asia Cup failure. Despite reaching the semi-finals of last year’s T20 World Cup and the final of the Asia Cup 2022 led by Babar, his captaincy in important matches has come under scrutiny.

“I don’t think the captain is cut out for the job in this format. He is looking for classic drives to rediscover his touch instead of trying to play close to the body. He just wants to look classic. What kind of method is this to find form?” Akhtar questioned.

Babar Azam

“Babar made one mistake. He should have had Nawaz bowl the 13th or 14th over. It was too late. You can’t have a spinner in T20s bowling in the last 3 to 4 overs, especially against the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya,” Akram had said on Star Sports.

Babar Azam, who has been in top form across all three formats in recent years, had a disastrous Asia Cup campaign in the UAE, scoring only 68 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 107.93, including a duck against Afghanistan. Due to his poor performance, he lost the top spot in the T20I rankings to his teammate and opening partner Mohammad Rizwan.

In the recently concluded Asia Cup, the Pakistan team reached the final after defeating India and Afghanistan. But in the final match against Sri Lanka, the Men in Green struggled with the bat and failed to chase the target. Apart from opener Rizwan, no other batsman was able to score.

The Pakistan skipper will be hoping to regain his form and hone his captaincy skills as the Babar-led team host England in seven Twenty20 internationals starting on Tuesday, September 20. The main focus will be on Pakistan’s middle order.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka was at the forefront of his team’s brilliant performance in the recent Asia Cup 2022 tournament, where his side defeated Pakistan in the final in Dubai On September 11 to become six-time Asian champions.

The side had lost their first match of the tournament to Afghanistan after being bowled out for just 105, but then gathered steam as all the players contributed here and there and they won five matches in a row to win the title, despite at one time, their odds of winning the tournament were low and plunged to borderline nonexistent after that defeat.

Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain Dasun Shanaka refused to take the credit for the side’s Asia Cup triumph, and instead heaped praise on his players for making his job easy.

“Whether it’s Wanindu [Hasaranga], Chamika [Karunaratne] or Bhanuka [Rajapaksa], everyone gets down to the same level and works together. When Wanindu goes and gives some advice to a younger player, a lot of the time it’s useful. Similarly, we always consult the players before taking decisions. This is why it makes my job easy; I can’t take the credit, as a team each person involved deserves the credit,” Shanaka was quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“As A Captain, The Best Thing I Can Do Is Give A Player The Confidence”- Dasun Shanaka

Shanaka, having a more democratic approach to decision-making and keeping his players relaxed and in an optimal mindset to perform their skills in high-pressure situations was just as crucial.

“As a captain, the best thing I can do is give a player the confidence to perform their skills. I also don’t get upset if they make a mistake. A lot of cricket is about emotions; if you can control your emotions, as a team you can go very far.

I don’t like to put limits and pressure on players. If you put a limit on a player, you can’t get the best out of them on the field. It’s just as important to get them feeling good on the ground as well as off it. As a side, we’ve started to understand that. So the players were quite relaxed and the results followed from that,” he added.

Sri Lanka’s next assignment is the T20 World Cup in Australia, one which they will first have to qualify for. Sri Lanka has been placed in Group A of the qualifying round with Namibia, Netherlands, and UAE. They will play Namibia in the tournament opener in Geelong on October 16.

Wasim Akram has warned internet trolls on targeting him as he is well equipped to handle them amidst the recent controversy involving India pacer Arshdeep Singh who was brutally targetted on social media for his drop catch during an India -Pakistan match in Asia Cup 2022.

Arshdeep Singh had dropped the catch of Pakistani batter Asif Ali in the must-win clash in the Super 4s of the Asia Cup 2022 tournament. Pakistan ended up winning the close contest by 5 wickets, as the left-arm pacer failed to defend 7 runs in the last over of the match.

The 23-year-old, who made his debut for India earlier this year was attacked with personal comments being made and his Wikipedia page tampered with. It was taken to such a level that the trolls were slammed by both Indian and Pakistan cricket fraternities and Arshdeep’s parents called it one of the worst things they had experienced.

I Have A Very Simple Theory. If Somebody Is Rude To Me, I Will Be 10 Times Ruder: Wasim Akram On Arshdeep Singh Trolling Controversy

Supporting Arshdeep Singh, Wasim Akram said he fails to wrap his head around the fact that these are people from Arshdeep’s own country taking shots at him, and added that had it been him, he would not hold back from replying back to trolls in their own language.

“If social media wants to target or have a go at someone, try me. Muqaabla karna hai to mujhse karo, then I can reply back. I have a very simple theory. If somebody is rude to me, I will be 10 times ruder. If someone will like me or send me a funny message or has a good sense of humour, I will be exactly the same. Having a go at a young kid, your own kid, doesn’t make any sense. I am all for fans and their opinions, but unless and until you haven’t played professional cricket, you don’t know what type of pressures players are going through on and off the field,” Akram had said ahead of the start of the India vs Sri Lanka match.

Akram even gave the example of Pakistan’s Hassan Ali, who dropped Matthew Wade’s catch during the T20 World Cup 2021 semifinal between Australia and Pakistan, which resulted in Wade hitting Shaheen Afridi for three sixes in a row to put the Kangaroos into the final. Hassan Ali also faced similar criticism and trolling for his fielding blunder.

Akram stressed it is just a game and it is best for everyone that people treat it like one and how this attitude from fans towards people needs to drop.

“It’s only a game. I saw on social media that a lot of people were having a go at Arshdeep. Their own people… that’s what baffles me. Since dropping that catch in the World Cup last year, every day he trends. These guys read social media. He is a young guy, who is going to play for India for next 10-15 year, and he bowled a brilliant last over. I dropped catches under pressure in crucial games. But you have to move on as a nation,” added Akram.

Former Pakistan National Cricket Team captain and selector, Inzamam-ul-Haq, has come up with a response to veteran player Shoaib Malik’s cryptic tweet, which he posted after Pakistan’s Asia Cup  2022 final defeat.

Pakistan National Cricket Team lost the Asia Cup 2022 final by 23 runs against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team on Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Chasing the 171-run target, Pakistan lost wickets of Babar Azam (5) and Fakhar Zaman (0) inside the first six overs. The No.1 ranked T20I batter Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed batted cautiously and had a 71-run partnership in 59 balls, which had no major impact on the Pakistan innings. In the end, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and they were bundled out for 147.

After Pakistan’s defeat, Malik, who was dropped from the side after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE, posted a cryptic tweet that left the netizens confused.

“When will we come out from friendship, liking & disliking culture. Allah always helps the honest,” Malik tweeted.

The 40-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal replied, saying, “Ustad G …don’t be this much honest.”

Such allegations have been there in the past and will continue in the future as well – Inzamam-ul-Haq

During an interaction with the reporters, Inzamam-ul-Haq was asked about his views on Malik’s cryptic tweet. Inzamam said that the allegations made by Malik have been made in the past and will continue in the future as well. Former Pakistan captain added that the liking and disliking culture is everywhere, but selecting the players is not a “one-man decision”.

“Such allegations have been there in the past and will continue in the future as well. We must understand that selection is not a one-man decision, there is a team of selectors, coach and captain who take a call (on selection). I can’t comment on friendships, but yes like-dislikes are everywhere,” he was quoted as saying in a report by The Indian Express.

Inzamam further backed Shan Masood, Sharjeel Khan and Shoaib Malik to be part of Team Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

“I think Shan Masood and Sharjeel (Khan) and Shoaib Malik should be in the team, especially in the middle order,” he further said.

Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka by 23 runs in the Asia Cup 2022 final at the Dubai International Stadium on September 11. Babar Azam’s team were the favourites for the final match, but silly fielding mistakes and a middle-order failure cost them.

Mohammad Rizwan, who was the tournament’s top scorer with 281 runs in six games, no other Pakistani batsman batted well in the tournament and they lost the title due to depending on one player.

One of the major concerns of the Pakistan cricket team in this defeat is the lack of a dominant middle order. With this, some senior cricketers are mentioning the names of Shan Masood and Shoaib Malik, who are not in the Asia Cup team. Malik’s name was discussed because of his vast experience in the game.

Following the defeat, veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik took to Twitter to criticize Babar Azam and the selectors for selecting “friends” over talented players.

He tweeted: “When will we come out from friendship, liking & disliking culture. Allah always helps the honest…”

Pakistan has played just one T20I this year before the Asia Cup in September and Shoaib Malik played in the team’s last T20I series in 2021. As a result, his removal from the team attracted a lot of attention.

Now, a six-month-old video of the 40-year-old batsman’s interview with Cricket Pakistan is doing the rounds on social media after some shocking revelations over his conversations with captain Babar Azam about the Asia Cup selection.

Babar Asked Me If I Wanted To Retire Last year – Malik

“Yes, I talked to Babar. He asked me if I wanted to retire when we were at the (T20) World Cup (2021). See, there should be a transparent conversation on these things, everyone should know what I want. I’ve played for so many years, I think I deserve that much. There must be some clarity on what the board wants and what the player wants,” Malik said in the video on whether he had a conversation with the Pakistan skipper.

“So, Babar asked me that. I told him, ‘Babar, considering the environment right now and whatever happened with me during the recent past, I don’t want to play. If you want an answer on my fitness or whether I could be a burden on team, there’s nothing like that. You know my fitness. If you want me to play, though, I will be available for Pakistan.”

Malik said they both agreed that Babar would take the final decision on whether to play the veteran Pakistan batsman in the selective series or matches.

“Before the one-off Australia T20I, he told me that I will tell you. I told Babar, ‘if you think I’m not needed anymore, you can tell me. I understand that there are new players coming up. I will be happy to step aside’.”

“In recent past, there have been many legends in our country who didn’t receive the send-off they deserved. Every cricketer wants that. Mohammad Hafeez retired recently, and we could have showed a small gesture in way of a trophy or a souvenir to him during the PSL to thank him for his services,” Malik said.

Pre-title favourites Team India didn’t perform as expected in Asia Cup 2022. Despite some positives such as Virat Kohli’s return to form, the struggle of some players has been a concern for the team management.

The BCCI has announced the squad for the next T20 World Cup starting on October 16 in Australia. Not many changes have been made to the Indian team that participated in the Asia Cup.

After recovering from injuries, Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned to the team. Mohammed Shami returns as the standby option, with the batting order unchanged despite the absence of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja due to injury.

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria expressed his thoughts on the Indian batting order, saying that India’s fate at the World Cup in Australia will be decided by how their top three perform with the bat. He added that Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul must find their best form else the results in the T20 World Cup 2022 will be the same as the Asia Cup.

Kaneria added that Kohli’s century against Afghanistan was definitely the most encouraging aspect of India’s Asia Cup campaign. Arshdeep Singh’s bowling has also been outstanding on many occasions.

“While Virat Kohli has returned to form, the likes of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul must score big runs. Otherwise, their campaign will be the same as it was at the Asia Cup,” Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

Umran Malik, who played brilliantly in the Indian Premier League season, did not get a place. While Umran’s absence may not hurt India’s preparations, former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria said that given the surfaces in Australia, the bowler from Kashmir should be considered among the standby players.

“India could have kept Umran Malik as one of the standby players as the Indian batters would have got to practice against a bowler who can consistently bowl quick,” Kaneria added.

Umran, who made his T20I debut this year, is still considered a raw prospect who needs to improve his consistency before becoming an important member of the Indian team.

After losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage of the continental tournament, India failed to advance to the finals.

On October 24, the Men in Blue will begin their campaign against archrival Pakistan. Last year in Dubai, Babar Azam and co defeated the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan Cricket Team’s fallout in the final of Asia Cup 2022 has raised a lot of questions regarding their approach. Former Cricketer Salman Butt was furious about the team’s performance. Men in Green’s habit of being unpredictable isn’t doing them any good. Chasing 171 at the Dubai International Stadium wasn’t a mountain to climb as the pitch didn’t have demons in it.

The likes of Fakhar & Babar didn’t rise to the occasion and every time Rizwan won’t be the match-winner. We all have seen that Pakistan Cricket Team doesn’t have recognizable middle-order batters who can play significant innings. The likes of Asif Ali Iftikhar Ahmed should stick to the crease rather than throwing away the wicket.

Salman Butt on Pakistan Cricket Team

After the loss against Sri Lanka Shadab Khan posted a tweet:

Salman Butt took a dig at Shadab Khan & Pakistan Cricket Team’s Twitter handle while talking on his YouTube channel. “The funny part is that they all have one manager and he only posts good things about one player and then he only goes to the other end and acknowledges it. It’s just become a circus.”

Salman Butt

“A player from one end apologizes for his mistake but then the other says “No brother, you played really well. But all these tweets are done by the same manager (laughs). All this is just a play-act. I can bet on it that more than half of them don’t know what’s written in their tweet.” He added.

Lack of intent from batters

Pakistani batters should have targeted bowlers which could have been a lot easier. The team required more than 11 runs in the last 5 overs and we have seen that one bad over can ruin all the hard work. PCB may go backward and bring back Shoaib Malik & Sarfaraz Ahmed as both are quite effective.

Babar Azam

The batting Coach Yousuf would be under the scanner as the batters looked off-color. Babar Azam has been under the pump as the batter hasn’t scored a big knock throughout the Asia Cup. We all know that how pivotal Babar Azam is to Pakistan’s setup as he knows how to construct an innings.

Ex-Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has made strong remarks about the current team not giving youngsters enough chances and making them ready for the marquee tournaments. The Men in Green suffered a 23-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2022 Finals, with Pakistan losing their last eight wickets for just 54 runs.

Butt opined the Pakistan middle order needs a reshuffle while admitting that there aren’t too many options on the bench. He questioned the team management for not increasing the depth of the talent pool as they didn’t rotate the squad whenever there was an opportunity.

Salman reveals youngsters should get more chances to get groomed better

Speaking on his YouTube channel on Tuesday, Salman Butt addressed Pakistan’s middle-order woes stating, “I had told this three years ago that with such a system, there will come a time when you will start searching quality players but won’t find any. This management didn’t give youngsters the chance to get groomed by playing with experienced players and now whatever replacements they have are very young and raw.”

Pakistan coach Saqlain Mushtaq needs to be asked the right questions, reckons Butt

Salman Butt also wasn’t pleased with the kind of questions that Pakistan head coach Saqlain Mushtaq was asked after the crushing defeat in the final. He feels the questions could have been centred around some of the questionable decisions made by the think tank.

“I don’t know why they (reporters) didn’t ask the right questions to the coach. Why didn’t Nawaz come to bat at the same position after his knock against India? If Shadab is playing well, how do you send Asif Ali and Khushdil ahead of him? If Naseem Shah is expensive at the death then why don’t you complete all of his overs upfront? You speak about win the toss, win the game but who won the Asia Cup?”

The batter was on the verge of getting dropped as many experts demanded his axe. The Skipper Rohit Sharma stood behind him in the crisis, and it paid off.

A billion people would have mixed feelings as they couldn’t see team India clinching Asia Cup 2022. The Men in Blue would be dejected not because of a poor Asia Cup 2022, but because there was no fighting spirit. The Men in Blue will need to pull up their socks as T20 World Cup is just steps away.

Former Pakistan Captain Shahid Afridi was having an interaction with Samma TV.  “The way Virat has played, the start that he had to his career, there was struggle initially before he made a name for himself. He is a champion and I believe there comes a stage when you are headed towards retirement. But in that scenario, the aim should be to go out on a high.”

“It shouldn’t reach a stage where you are dropped from the team and instead when you are at your peak. It seldom happens though. Very few players, especially cricketers from Asia Cup make that decision, but I feel when Virat does it, he will do it style and probably in the same manner in which he started his career.” The former all-rounder added.

Virat Kohli The Fighter

The right-handed batter was in serious problem as it looked like he was finding new ways to get out. The batter lacked the fire in his eyes and his off-side weakness was blatantly exposed. It looked like the old King Kohli got disappeared.

Virat was rested for the Caribbean tour and that did wonders as he got a much-needed break and he was rejuvenated. The batter batted with a lot of intent and made a statement that he isn’t finished yet. The batter knows that he still has a lot to contribute to the Indian Cricket Team.

Legendary India National Cricket Team batter Sunil Gavaskar has said that the Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team gave a nice tight slap to all those who were saying that the final of the Asia Cup 2022 would be played between Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Babar Azam-led Pakistan National Cricket Team.

The Asia Cup 2022, which was the 15th edition of the tournament, was played from August 27 to September 11. The entire tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The moment the schedule and fixtures of the Asia Cup 2022 were announced, many people labelled the multi-nation tournament as the mini India-Pakistan series. Many thought that the final of the Asia Cup 2022 would be played between arch-rivals, India and Pakistan. However, that was not the case in reality as Rohit Sharma and Co. failed to make it to the final after losing back-to-back in the Asia Cup 2022 Super 4 stage.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka National Cricket Team defeated Pakistan National Cricket Team by 23 runs on September 11 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium to take their Asia Cup title tally to 6 – just one behind India.

Everyone was talking about India-Pakistan as if these were the only two teams – Sunil Gavaskar

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said that everyone was talking about India-Pakistan in the Asia Cup and Sri Lanka, who were under the radar, won the championship

“They were under the radar, weren’t they? (Sri Lanka). Because everything in the Asia Cup was about India and Pakistan.

“Everyone was talking about India-Pakistan, India-Pakistan and India-Pakistan as if these were the only two teams. And when you look at the fact that Sri Lanka has won this (Asia Cup) for the 6th time, that is second only to India, it does tell you that when you talk about prospects, you must not ignore Sri Lanka. And that’s a nice tight slap that Sri Lankans have given to all those who were trying to say it’s going to be an India vs Pakistan final,” the legendary batter further said.

Former Test cricketer Sadiq Mohammad urged Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja on Monday to sack the national selection committee, particularly top selector Mohammad Waseem, for failing to field a strong T20 team.

The demand was made shortly after Pakistan’s absolute failure against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final on Sunday in the UAE.

“It’s the right time to change this selection committee, especially Mohammad Waseem,” Sadiq told ‘The News.

Sadiq Mohammad expressed concern with Pakistan’s errant batting, claiming that the team only had two proper batsmen in captain Babar Azam and wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan. He said the other people were just sloggers. He claimed that the top selector’s favorites were Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali.

“It appears that our chief selection favors Asif and Iftikhar. Despite their poor performance, they are chosen for every away tour. They ought to get some serious rest, in my opinion,” Sadiq stated. Why does the chief selector keep selecting these two, I wonder. The selection criteria are seriously in doubt,” Sadiq Mohammad remarked.

Fakhar Zaman cannot take ones and twos: Sadiq Mohammad

Sadiq Mohammad claimed that Pakistan desperately needed reliable middle-order batters. He claimed that although batting coach Mohammad Yousuf must be delivering lessons on how to play, the middle order batters at the moment lack the mental capacity to pick up the game’s strategies.

“Asif, Iftikhar, and, to some extent, Fakhar Zaman cannot take ones and twos. Fakhar could have been better as an opener as he could utilize the circle in the power-play in the Asia Cup.”

Forget about the strike rate of Fakhar Zaman as he has never been consistent,” Sadiq said. “A technically correct middle order batsman can also hit sixes and he is capable of keeping the scoreboard ticking and keeps bringing seven to eight runs in an over,” he said.

Pakistan lost against Sri Lanka in a match that fluctuated till the final overs of the other team’s innings. Throughout their 172-run chase, Sri Lanka made it difficult for Pakistan to score, and they tightened the screws in the final four overs.

Pakistan National Cricket Team head coach Saqlain Mushtaq has come in support of star wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan amid the backlash the No.1 ranked T20I batter is facing for his batting approach in T20 cricket.

On Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan lost the Asia Cup 2022 final by 23 runs against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. The batting unit of Team Pakistan faced heavy criticism after the defeat as the required run rate kept on climbing and the batters were not playing the attacking brand of cricket.

The No.1 ranked batter in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, Mohammad Rizwan, scored a poor 55 runs off 49 balls before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga in the 17th over of the match.

After the match, former Pakistan cricketers Shoaib Akhtar and Inzamam-ul-Haq criticised Rizwan for his batting approach.

“Rizwan, 50 off 50 is not going to work anymore. Doesn’t benefit Pakistan,” Akhtar tweeted.

“Had the 70 runs been scored at a more leisurely rate, the final score would have only been about 140, which Pakistan would have been able to chase down. Therefore, those 70 runs would have been for nothing,” Inzamam said on his YouTube channel.

At a press conference, Pakistan head coach Saqlain was asked about the heavy criticism faced by Rizwan after his knock in the Asia Cup final. Saqlain took an indirect jibe at the “experts” and said that they have no idea about the dressing room environment and added it’s easier to pass remarks from outside.

“Unki soch hai. Jo bahir log baithe hote hai na wo bahir se cheezon ko dekhte hai aur uske upar baat kar dete hai (It’s their thinking, people observe things from outside and pass their remarks on it),” he said.

“It’s not their mistake. They saw the result, and scorecard and made their comments. They have no idea about what is happening inside the dressing room, what the players feel about their confidence and the injuries they are carrying.

“I have worked as an expert for three years. So I know how things work. Once they work closely with the cricketers from inside only then they will get to know about the team bonding, the environment,” he said.

Sri Lanka Changed The Strategy “Win The Toss And Win The Match – Danish Kaneria

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria praised Sri Lanka for changing the strategy in the Asia Cup to “win the toss and win the match.”

Kaneria praised Sri Lanka, saying, Sri Lanka has beaten Pakistan in every format except this one, and I don’t understand why captain Babar Azam didn’t give the ball to Mohammad Nawaz early.  Nawaz came into the bowling in the 16th over and bowled the over.

“Congratulations Sri Lanka on Winning the Asia Cup. Well deserved victory. Lankans change the trend of winning toss and winning match, they outclassed Pakistan in every department. Y Nawaz was not bowling poor captaincy,” Kaneria tweeted.

Pakistan won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first. Sri Lankan openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka were dismissed early and returned to the pavilion on 23/2. However, even after this, Sri Lanka lost wickets early because the Pakistani bowlers had put a lot of pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen at the time.

The turning point in Sri Lanka’s innings, however, came when Bhanuka Rajapaksa batted.  Rajapaksa’s 45-ball 71 made a significant contribution to the team’s challenging score of 170/6.

In reply, when Pakistan came out to bat, Dilshan Madushanka had the worst start as he bowled five illegal deliveries and conceded nine runs. Pakistan captain Babar Azam for 5 runs in Pramod Madushan bowling.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne again broke the Pakistan middle order batting and after that created a lot of problems for the Pakistan team.

Pakistan were bowled out for 147 runs in the full 20 overs, with Mohammad Rizwan top-scoring for the team with a 49-ball 55.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team silenced all the critics around the world by winning the Asia Cup 2022. The Island nation recorded its 6th Asia Cup title and the team was quite ruthless. Head Coach Chris Silverwood would be pleased after all their all hard work paid off. The official hosts of the tourney knocked over Pakistan in the final by 23 runs and showed to the world that they are not a finished product.

Sri Lanka found match-winners on a given day and wasn’t dependent on a single individual which made them a force to reckon with. Captain Dasun Shanaka showed great leadership skills and he was always the bowler’s captain. The skipper knows that his side needs to find a little bit more vigilant while attacking as they have a bad habit of losing wickets in quick succession.

Chris Silverwood was seen interacting with Broadcasters after the game. “Great thing is at any given point everybody puts their hands up. Just had to get a method. Had confidence in the talent in the team,” said Silverwood.

Came in with a very young seam attack — seeing them perform has been superb. It’s not right to pick one person out – it’s been a team effort,” he added.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa on Fire

The left-handed batter had a stern task on his hands as the team was in deep trouble at 58-5. It looked as if the team would get bundled out for less than 130 runs. The batter formed a partnership with Wanindu Hasaranga and the duo slowly & steadily started making inroads. The batters made sure to get an odd boundary which relieved the pressure.

Rajapaksa scored an unbeaten 71 runs and was looking in sublime touch. Sri Lanka somehow took the total to 170 runs which were quite good given their early wobble. Hasaranga played a 30-odd run cameo due to which there was no added pressure on Rajapaksa. Sri Lanka’s lower middle order proved to be too hot to handle for Pakistani bowlers.

Former Sri Lankan head coach Mickey Arthur heaped praise on Asia Cup hero Wanindu Hasaranga and said that the all-rounder is someone who loves playing on the big stage. Hasaranga was Sri Lanka’s saviour – played top innings of 36 from 21 balls and then picked up three wickets to sway the game in his team’s favour and help them win their sixth Asia Cup.

Speaking on ESPNCricinfo, Arthur hailed the all-rounder as a big match player and gave plaudits for his role in the partnership with Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

Arthur opines that Wanindu Hasaranga delivers his best performance in crunch situations

Speaking about Hasaranga’s heroic performance, the veteran South African said, “He is a big match player. He loves playing on the edge, he loves playing on the big stage. His batting, that partnership he had with Bhanuka, was superb. He took the game on. He allowed Bhanuka to go a little bit slower, and made sure he was there at the back end. And then the three wickets in one over.”

“He stands up when the going gets tough. That is one thing I have always liked about Wanindu Hasaranga. From the moment I saw him, no moment is too big for him. When the pressure is on, he gets stuck in and does the job for you. Very reliable and I knew he would come good today,” added Arthur.

Wanindu Hasaranga knows the difference between confidence and arrogance

When asked when he found that Hasaranga is a big match player, the former Sri Lankan coach opened up about his confidence as a player and talked about his best traits.

“There’s a fine line in players between confidence and arrogance. And the best players are on the line. Wanindu sits on the line. He is a very very confident cricketer. And those cricketers back themselves when the going gets tough. They back themselves in hard pressure situations.

“They’re almost like showmen, they’re almost like actors. That’s when they’re at their best. Wanindu possesses everything that’s good about those traits.

“He is a wonderful, wonderful cricketer. I just knew it. You could see the way he carried himself, the way he carries himself around his peers. He is incredible, very very good,” said Arthur.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team astounded everyone and won the Asia Cup 2022 in a grand style. The Island Nation would be ecstatic and it won’t be wrong to say that Sri Lankan Cricket is getting great again.

The peculiarity of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team was that they never gave up and showed a lot of courage and a fearless attitude. Khaled Mahmud BCB Director & Dasun Shanaka were involved in an unexpected word of battles where Khaled had said Sri Lanka doesn’t have any world-class spinner

Sri Lanka Cricket’s turning point was that nail-biting encounter against Bangladesh Cricket Team. That match was quite nervy yet Sri Lanka came out victorious against all odds. Sri Lanka showed the world Cricket that they can be unbeatable on any given day as they have developed a habit of finding match-winners which is invaluable in T20I Cricket.

Maheesh Theekshana Takes a Jibe on Khaled Mahmud

Sri Lanka’s off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana posted a message on his Twitter account. “Now we are world-class brothers” Said Theekshana. It would be interesting to see how long the two nations would be involved in a verbal spat. Khaled Mahmud somewhat spurred the Sri Lankan Cricket Team.

Sri Lanka Cricket Team on Roll

Sri Lanka won’t be able to believe that they defeated champion teams. Head Coach Chris Silverwood & Captain Dasun Shanaka would be over the moon and it won’t be wrong to say that they have a team that can compete in any conditions. They have to find a way of not falling like a pack of cards as this habit is ruining their campaign.

Dasun Shanaka

We should not forget that the likes of Dinesh Chandimal & Angelo Mathews weren’t a part of the setup. The two senior batters were blatantly ignored and the youngsters stepped up. The revival’s credit must go to Dasun Shanaka as he has taken the responsibility for the team in the worst phase. Although, they need to pull their socks for T20 World Cup Qualifiers where they can’t afford to get complacent.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in Asia Cup 2022 Finals- Highlights

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and opted to field and made a strong start to the contest. At one point, Sri Lanka was reeling at 58/5 in the 9th over. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga stitched together a crucial partnership to bring Sri Lanka back into the game. Rajapaksa played a stellar knock of 71 runs off just 45 balls to propel Sri Lanka’s total to 170 runs.

Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed tried to salvage the match by putting together a valuable partnership. But Sri Lankan bowlers showed great mental fortitude and persisted with their disciplined bowling as the Pakistan batters eventually choked under pressure and finished at 147 runs in their 20 overs.

He performed well when the team was in trouble and scored unbeaten 71 runs in 45 balls with the help of 6 fours and 3 sixes.

After Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in the 2022 Asia Cup final on Sunday, September 11, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq emphasized the importance of strike rate in the shorter format of the game.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Mohammad Rizwan played complete contrast innings to their respective teams, prompting Inzamam to comment on the batsmen’s strike rates.

The 30-year-old received the Player of the Match award. Rajapaksa has an excellent strike rate under intense pressure. His strike rate was 157.78 in the final against Pakistan.

“Hasaranga scored 31 and Rajapaksa scored 71, those were two great knocks. The pace at which the runs and the situation from which the runs were made was a great sight, ”Inzamam said on his YouTube channel.

“Had the 70 runs come at a slower pace, the total would only have been around 140, which Pakistan would have chased down. So, that 70 runs would have been of no use.”

Following Babar Azam’s early dismissal, wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan tried to play the role of the anchor during the run chase. No. 1 T20I batter scored 55 runs off 49 deliveries as Pakistan lost momentum in the run chase, falling just short by 23 runs.

“Pakistan Played Well In The Tournament, But Not Very Well” – Inzamam-ul-Haq

Along with archival India, the Men in Green have been picked as one of the favourites to win the 2022 Asia Cup. However, Sri Lanka’s performances extended the team’s decades-long wait to win the trophy.

Inzamam said about letting Pakistan off the hook after thrashing Sri Lanka 58-5 at one stage of the game:

“All of Sri Lanka’s pacers are newcomers, none of them are experienced, but they have come having done their homework. Pakistan played well in the tournament, but not very well.”

“Many of their flaws were on show. They could not capitalize on the pressure, which helped them reduce Sri Lanka for 58-5 at one stage of the game.”

Sri Lanka Cricket Team won Asia Cup 2022 against all odds and won their 6th Asia Cup Title. The official hosts of the tourney were given a huge setback by Afghanistan Cricket Team in the opener of the tournament. Legendary batter Mahela Jayawardene was quite impressed by the team’s performance.

The Island Nation would be over the moon as they convincingly defeated Men in Green in the finals. Sri Lanka Cricket made a resounding statement that they are no longer underdogs and are a force to reckon with.

Pakistan would be dejected as they missed a golden opportunity to win their 3rd Asia Cup Title. Chasing 171 is not a difficult task and losing the match by 23 runs is unacceptable in Dubai International Stadium as in Dubai, a team rarely wins a match batting first.

Babar Azam is facing a torrid time as the batter is finding new ways to get out which has now started to hurt the team. Babar needs to rediscover himself as there’s hardly any time before T20 World Cup 2022.

Mahela Jayawardene on Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Cricket Team achieved an unbelievable feat as defeating Pakistan Cricket Team is never an easy task. Former Sri Lanka Captain Mahela Jayawardene heaped praise on the team. “Good toss to lose boys !! Showed character and passion to play for the country and so proud of each and every one enjoy the victory as entire country will.. brilliant team effort #AsiaCup2022.” tweeted Jayawardene.

Steep Road Ahead for Sri Lanka Cricket Team

Even after winning Asia Cup 2022, the Island Nation have a tough task on hands. They are scheduled to play T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Australia. They once again would be under the pump as all the associate nations would be well prepared to tackle any sort of challenge.

Head Coach Chris Silverwood would be aware that the team still has loopholes in it. The batter’s all-out attack approach almost made a mess out of the final. It would be interesting to see whether the team continues to be fearless in Australia where pitches would be bouncy and the boundaries would be long.

Sri Lanka in current form are looking threatening and the fans would be hoping that they continue the good work.

Sri Lanka National Cricket Team captain Dasun Shanaka is hoping that the Asia Cup 2022 championship win triggers the turnaround in Sri Lanka Cricket.

Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team defeated Babar Azam-led Pakistan National Cricket Team by 23 runs to win their 6th Asia Cup title on Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who smashed sensational 71 runs off 45 balls, including 6 fours and 3 sixes, won the Player of the Match award in the final. Speaking after the match, Rajapaksa said that they want to bring back the aggression to Sri Lanka Cricket.

We always wanted to show the world – a couple of decades back, we had aggression in our side, and we wanted to create those moments [again] as a unit,” Rajapaksa said after the win as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“Looking forward, we want to keep up this momentum ahead of the World Cup. With the crisis happening back home, this is a tough time for all the Sri Lankans, but hope we brought some smiles on the faces of our people. This is to the whole nation; they were waiting for this for so long.”

During the same press conference, Dasun Shanaka lauded the Sri Lankan players for making a strong comeback and winning the title after facing a humiliating defeat in the Asia Cup opener against Afghanistan.

He said: “After that first loss, we had a serious discussion. We knew we had the talent, but it was about applying those in game scenarios and all the players stood up. It’s the environment we created as a team and coaching staff that has paid off.”

“Believe in our cricketers. A lot of bad things are going around. As cricketers, they too should enjoy their lives as well, not spreading bad things. They have private lives too. Keep believing, that is the key. As a captain, I give confidence to the players, [whatever] I can. I can’t ask more than that.”

Madushan brings promise, skill and maturity – Dasun Shanaka

Shanaka further heaped praise on Pramod Madushan for his brilliant performance with the ball in the crucial games. He asserted:

“Madushan brings promise, skill and maturity. We knew him from the start of his domestic career, but we had to take a risk to get the rewards. Madushan’s skills were there [to see] and he’s got a good career ahead. Glad he delivered in just his second game; glad he rewarded us for the risk we have taken [in picking him].”

He also said that Team Sri Lanka have been playing very good cricket for the past two-three years, but the winning factor was lacking. He said:

“Even two-three years back, the team used to play good cricket, but the winning factor wasn’t there. This could be the turnaround in our cricket, this lot can continue to play for five-six years, which is a very good sign as well.”

Shanaka was further asked about his views on the Asia Cup 2022 being called the mini-India-Pakistan series ahead of its commencement.

“It’s not like that,” he said with a smile. “When it comes to India-Pakistan, we know it’s a different game. Our cricketing history is also good, so we didn’t have anything to prove about us being a good team. The only thing is we weren’t probably ranked high enough, but with this team, we can do better and become that high-ranking team [we aspire to be].”

Despite being the favourites going into the Asia Cup 2022 final, Pakistan had to settle for second place. With just 58 on the board, the Babar Azam-led team packed half of the Lankan unit and got the match off to the predicted start.

However, the team managed to reach 170/6 after 20 overs thanks to a superb performance from Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who hit an unbeaten 71 off 45 balls, and a cameo of 36 runs in 21 balls from Wanindu Hasaranga.

Unlucky With The Way Babar Azam’s Getting Out: Saqlain Mushtaq

When Pakistan began their run chase, pacer Dilshan Madushanka let up 10 freebies without bowling a single ball. Madushanka got things going with a no-ball before bowling a string of wide ones, one of which also produced a boundary.

Though Pakistan’s star hitter Babar Azam once again failed to have an impact with the bat, Pramod Madushan gave Sri Lanka their first dismissal. The captain pushed a wide ball down the leg, which led to Madushanka collecting a catch at short fine leg. Following his dismissal, Pakistan lost Fakhar Zaman in the next delivery. He was out for 5(6).

Pakistan could only muster 147/10 in response as the run rate increased and the Sri Lankan players put out an outstanding effort on the field.

Even though Pakistan’s captain Babar, who has a reputation for being a prolific scorer, only managed 68 runs in the six matches his team played, head coach Saqlain Mushtaq justified the skipper’s decline in performance.

“As I said before, anybody with a deep eye of cricket will realise that he is unlucky with the way he is getting out,” said Saqlain at the post-match press conference.

“The way he plays and his work ethic needs no further discussion. He is a world-class player and God save him from the evil eye,” he added.

Sri Lanka won the trophy for the sixth time after defeating Pakistan by 23 runs in the 2022 Asia Cup final. After winning the toss, Pakistan chose to bowl first, but the team could not chase down the target of 171 runs.

Despite having several big hitters in the batting order, Pakistan failed to score quickly in the final overs and were bowled out for 147 in 20 overs.

After Pakistan’s defeat, some experts criticized the players for their poor performance. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtarcriticized wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan for batting slowly and not being able to finish the games.

Rizwan Can’t Finish The Game – Shoaib Akhtar

Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 runs off 49 balls. His strike rate is a little over 112. When he tried to score early, he was dismissed, which put the team under pressure. Akhtar questioned Pakistan’s team selection and criticized Rizwan’s failure to complete the innings after spending time in the middle.

“Are we playing the wrong team time and again? There are question marks on Mohammad Rizwan because he can’t finish the game, he needs support from others. He played run-a-ball innings and after that, if he is not able to finish the match, then it is going to be a problem. So I think Pakistan has played very bad cricket, they should have batted first after winning the toss. Don’t know what was their plan,” Akhtar said on his YouTube channel.

“What a great nation Sri Lanka is, look at what they have gone through for the past six months or so. They managed to come out here and they show the world that they are the best in the tournament despite having India and Pakistan there. I am very happy for Sri Lanka, Well Done. I am very happy for Afghanistan, they also played good cricket, but unfortunately, they lost to us (Pakistan),” he added.

Akhtar was also critical of Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who struggled with the bat throughout the tournament and failed to score a half-century.

“But, Pakistan leaked too many runs with the ball. Babar Azam didn’t score runs throughout the tournament. Class Class Class, leave the class aside. Your class only displays when you are in form. He is trying to hit from the first ball itself. Secondly, Fakhar Zaman doesn’t know what has happened to him. And Ifitikar Ahmed he continues to play run-a-ball innings,” he added.

Akhtar, who spoke highly of Sri Lanka, wished Dasun Shanaka and company all the best. He said that they played solid cricket and showed resilience.

“Overall very poor performance from Pakistan bowlers and batters. Sri Lankans, you thoroughly deserved this win, you are the best team in the team in the tournament and you are going to be the best country in the world. My best wishes are with you as you have shown resilience and played solid cricket,” he added.

Rizwan finished the tournament with the most runs. He played a total of six matches and scored 281 runs at an average of 56.20 with the help of three fifties. However, his strike rate of 117.57 was criticized throughout the tournament.

Legendary Pakistan National Cricket Team player Wasim Akram and former India National Cricket Team player Sanjay Manjrekar have criticised the batting approach of the star Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan in T20 cricket.

On Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan lost the Asia Cup 2022 final by 23 runs against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. The batting unit of Team Pakistan faced heavy criticism after the defeat as the required run rate kept on rising during the run-chase and the batters were not playing the attacking brand of cricket.

Talking about the No.1 ranked batter in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, Mohammad Rizwan, he scored 55 runs off 49 balls before being dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga in the 17th over of the innings.

Speaking on Star Sports, as quoted by Hindustan Times, Akram said:

“At the beginning of the tournament, I had said that the openers won’t mess up but struggle in games like these. That’s exactly what happened today.”

Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar, during the same discussion, said that the ‘anchoring’ in T20 cricket is overrated. He added that Rizwan batting at a strike rate of 104 in the 16th over is a poor approach in T20 cricket.

“I’m very sceptical about ‘anchoring’ in T20 cricket. It’s overrated because you have got 10 wickets and 20 overs. I like India’s new template and Sri Lanka also didn’t have anybody who played the role of an anchor.

“It’s unfair to pick one guy but he (Rizwan) is a glaring example of Pakistan’s approach. You can’t have Rizwan batting at a strike rate of 104 in the 16th over when you are chasing 171,” said Sanjay Manjrekar in response.

I criticised him, which was healthy criticism. And people attacked me on social media – Wasim Akram

Akram further said that he had criticised Rizwan for his slow batting approach in the game against Hong Kong and he got attacked on social media for giving his opinion.

“He (Rizwan) had done the same thing against Hong Kong if you remember. I criticised him, which was healthy criticism. And people attacked me on social media. Pakistan people said that I don’t support Rizwan.

“If you want my opinion, I will give you the right and straightforward opinion. I am not the guy who will lie about what I see. Black is black and white is white for me,” said Akram.

Former Pakistan National Cricket Team captains Rashid Latif and Moin Khan have blamed Babar Azam’s captaincy for the defeat of the Men In Green in the Asia Cup 2022 final by 23 runs against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team on Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan National Cricket Team won the toss in the summit clash of the Asia Cup and the decision turned out to be beneficial for the side initially as bowlers reduced Sri Lanka to 58/5 in 8.5 overs.

After that, skipper Babar decided not to attack with the pacers and chose to bowl Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan. Also, Mohammad Nawaz got to bowl just one over in the match.

During that phase, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga had an amazing partnership that helped Sri Lanka gain momentum. The duo added 58 runs in 36 balls. After Hasaranga’s dismissal, Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne had an unbeaten 54 runs partnership in 31 balls that helped Sri Lanka post 170/6 on the board.

Chasing the target, Pakistan lost quick wickets of Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman while Mohammad Rizwan batted very slow and in the end, Pakistan were bowled out for 147.

Speaking after the match, Latif mentioned that the momentum shifted towards Sri Lanka after Pakistan chose to bowl spinners in the middle overs.

“When they were 58 for 5, it seemed the target would be 120-130. But Wanindu Hazaranga received pressure of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Runs kept coming from 11th over on to the 15th. He took the game in his hands and Rajapaksa too started,” Rashid Latif told PTV.

If I were the captain, I would have bowled out Haris Rauf after five wickets fell – Rashid Latif

Rashid Latif
Rashid Latif [Image-Google]
Latif further said that if he was the skipper he would have attacked with the pacers after Sri Lanka were reduced to 58/5. He was also disappointed to see the approach of the Pakistan batters during the run-chase.

“The biggest mistake was in bowling. If I were the captain, I would have bowled out Haris Rauf after five wickets fell and gone for wickets. Instead, Babar bowled part-time spinner. That surprised me. The main spinner was Mohammad Nawaz and you gave him just one over then.

“I wouldn’t even have bought him but attacked with fast bowlers. No wickets fell from the 8th to 15 and the run rate also kept climbing. And in our chase too, we batted slowly. Chase aisey nahi hote (This is not how you chase)” Latif said.

Ex-Pakistan captain Moin Khan agreed with Latif’s comments and said that Babar was dragging the match while thinking about final overs, which is negative thinking.

“We should have attacked with our main bowlers, the fast bowlers. That’s what common sense says. I don’t know why Babar was dragging the match.

“I guess he started thinking about the final overs. That’s negative thinking. Then you can’t plan. When you are positive, you could have gone all-out.”

The Sri Lankan team, captained by Dasun Shanaka, won the Asia Cup for the sixth time by defeating Pakistan by a score of 23 runs in the final.

When they batted first in the championship match, they were struggling at 58/5, but Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s unbeaten 71-run effort helped them reach 170/6 in 20 overs, and after that, Pramod Madushan’s four-wicket haul bowled out Pakistan for 147, giving the Lankans a 23-run victory.

It is crucial to remember that Sri Lanka does not automatically qualify for the 2022 T20 World Cup; instead, they must compete in the qualifying matches to ensure their spot in the group stage.

Virender Sehwag Tweets Interesting Tweet After Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup Win

Former Indian batter Virender Sehwag made an unconventional idea, stating it would be intriguing if teams that lose against opponents who haven’t qualified also lost their World Cup qualifying.

“Well played Sri Lanka, deserving champions of #AsiaCup. Imagine, they haven’t qualified for the T20 World Cup which is to be held next month. Wouldn’t it be interesting if you lose to a team that hasn’t qualified you too lose qualification? Tote ud jaate sab teams ke. #SLvsPAK,” tweeted Sehwag.

Dasun Shanaka’s underrated group defeated Pakistan by 23 runs to win their sixth Asia Cup championship here on Sunday. Sri Lanka, a country still picking up the pieces after the loss of democracy while also experiencing severe financial instability, found 11 deserving heroes on the cricket field.

After a disappointing start to the tournament, Sri Lanka has established their dominance in Asian cricket. Sri Lanka won the title match against Pakistan by 23 runs. Sri Lanka became the new champion of Asia.

Sri Lanka, who reached the final, broke many illusions and misconceptions in the tournament as a ‘dark horse’ team. Pakistan’s fielding looked very poor in the final match. In this match, many catches were dropped.

Pakistan fast bowlers caused damage to Sri Lanka by taking early wickets. Inform batsman Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka were not able to score in this match. Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf broke the Sri Lankan batting order by dismissing Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka. Meanwhile, a funny incident happened during the match.

In the sixth over of the match, Haris Rauf bowled a brilliant yorker to Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Pakistani players made a strong appeal for LBW, but the umpire declared it not-out. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam went for the DRS and the third umpire also declared the batsman not-out, but Shadab Khan was so eager for the wicket so he forcibly grabbed umpire’s hand and raised it.

Shadab Khan, who has been the match winner for Pakistan so far in this tournament, could not do anything special in the final match. In bowling, he conceded 28 runs in four overs and took only 1 wicket, while in batting he managed only 8 runs.

All rounder struggled in fielding too. He dropped 2 catches at crucial moments which made Pakistan bear the brunt. In the end, the Pakistani team had to face a defeat by Sri Lanka by 23 runs.

Pakistan lost two quick wickets in the form of skipper Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman while chasing 171 runs for victory. With a crucial partnership, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed got the innings back on track. Once the partnership was broken, Sri Lanka bowlers dominated Pakistan batters. Pramod Madushan ripped through Pakistan’s batting order, finishing with figures of 4/34. Wanindu Hasaranga picked up three wickets and completed his spell 3/27.

Pakistan National Cricket Team lost the Asia Cup 2022 final by 23 runs against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team on Sunday, September 11, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Dasun Shanaka-led side were invited to bat first in the Asia Cup final by the Men In Green. The Pakistan pacers performed exceptionally well and reduced Sri Lanka to 58/5.

However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga came in as saviours and provided the stability to the innings of the Lankan Lions. In the end, Sri Lanka were able to post 170/6 on the board with the help of brilliant batting performances by Bhanuka Rajapaksa (71), Wanindu Hasaranga (36) and Dhananjaya de Silva (28).

In the end, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and they were bowled out for 147.

Former cricketers harshly criticized Mohammad Rizwan‘s 49-ball 55 against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final.

As Sri Lanka continued to apply pressure by bowling cleanly in the middle overs, Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed (32) contributed 71 runs for the third wicket in just under 10 overs. By the time Rizwan was out in the 17th over, Pakistan had already lost the game. With six wickets in hand, they only needed 61 runs to take the final four wickets.

While providing analysis, Gautam Gambhir criticised Rizwan for his sluggish knock and questioned the batter’s batting strategy. Shoaib Akhter, a former Pakistani speedster, too had harsh words to say about Mohammad Rizwan’s valiant knock.

“Rizwan, 50 off 50 is not going to work anymore. Doesn’t benefit Pakistan,” Akhtar wrote on Twitter.

Saqlain Mushtaq, the head coach of Pakistan, backed Mohammad Rizwan’s batting strategy against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final, nonetheless.

Unki soch hai. Jo bahir log baithe hote hai na, wo bahir se cheezon ko dekhte hai aur uske upar baat kar dete hai (Easy to comment from outside, one gets to know only when they are part of the team), said Saqlain, when he was asked about Mohammad Rizwan’s criticism from the former cricketers.

In six innings at the Asia Cup, Mohammad Rizwan scored 281 runs for Pakistan, including three half-centuries. In T20Is, Rizwan is also the top batter.

“It’s not their mistake. They saw the result, and scorecard and made their comments. They have no idea about what is happening inside the dressing room, what the players feel about their confidence and the injuries they are carrying.

“I have worked as an expert for three years. So, I know how things worked. Once they work closely with the cricketers from inside only then they will get to know about the team bonding, the environment,” he added.

Saqlain also praised Asif Ali and Shadab Khan for continuing to play after suffering injuries throughout the game.

Asif ke haath mey chaar taanke lage hue hai. Shadab ke kaan me se khoon nikal raha, usko concussion ka tha fir bhi batting karne ke liye gaya (Asif played with four stitches in his hand. Shadab’s ear was bleeding, he was concussed after the collision and despite all of this he went to bat),” said Saqlain.

I’ll Credit The Sri Lankans: Saqlain Mushtaq

Bhanuka Rajapaksa earlier guided Sri Lanka from 58-5 to 170-6 in the final after Pakistan won the toss and decided to play after hitting an unbeaten 71 off 45 balls in Dubai.

“I’ll credit the Sri Lankans. We’d broken their backbone in the first nine overs, but the way Rajapaksa played, and the others rallied around him, no praise is enough. I’m sure it should be the best innings of his life. The way he lifted them, hats off,” said Saqlain on the Asia Cup winners.

Pakistan’s top order continued to battle against the speed as it fell to 147 all out off the last deliveries, with fast bowler Pramod Madushan taking 4-34 in just his second T20 international.

“As a batting unit, we didn’t perform according to our potential,” Babar said. “We didn’t finish the way we would have wanted to and gave away 15-20 extra runs … the more you learn from these ups-and-downs is good, but you need to reduce your mistakes.”

After losing to Afghanistan in its initial game of the tournament, Sri Lanka stunned everyone by winning five straight games, including two victories over Pakistan.

Shadab Khan, an all-rounder for Pakistan, accepted responsibility for his team’s loss to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final on September 11 in Dubai.

For one of Pakistan’s top fielders, the final of the continental championship, which Sri Lanka won by 23 runs, turned into a nightmare. Despite a strong start in the powerplay, Sri Lanka clawed back, and the Babar Azam-led team was unable to maintain the pressure.

I Let My Team Down: Shadab Khan

Shadab Khan, who had a head injury when Pakistan was fielding, missed two key catches, one of which was ultimately taken for a six in the last overs.

In a tweet, he said: “Catches win matches. Sorry, I take responsibility for this loss. I let my team down.”

The Pakistan all-rounder praised players like Mohammad Nawaz, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah for their outstanding performances in the Asia Cup. Shadab also emphasised Mohammad Rizwan’s heroic performance, who scored the most runs in the competition.

“Positives for the team, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Muhammad Nawaz and the entire bowling attack was great. Mohammad Rizwan fought hard. The entire team tried their best. Congratulations to Sri Lanka,” he added.

During the Asia Cup final, Shadab Khan stumbled while trying to intercept an overthrow. The Pakistan physio was summoned when Shadab was injured by the ball on the side of his head. Following the required concussion check, the all-rounder appeared OK and continued to bowl his assigned number of overs.

However, Shadab, who only managed to take one wicket, lost a critical catch of Bhanuka Rajapaksa at long on just as Pakistan managed to reverse the tide in their favour. The Sri Lankan attempted to hit the ball in the air, but Shadab miscalculated its course and was unable to hold on to the catch while he was backpedalling.

After that, Shadab and Asif Ali clashed, which led to the dropping of a catch in the 19th over. On a Mohammad Hasnain delivery, Rajapaksa swiped across, causing Asif at long-on to go to his left and Shadab at deep midwicket to move to his right.

Before the ball flew out of Asif’s fingers and sailed over the rope, Shadab’s head collided with his elbow. Rajapaksa’s 71 off 45 balls helped Sri Lanka reach 170/6. Pakistan was bowled out for 147.

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 23 runs in the final match of the Asia Cup 2022. Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup for the sixth time. The final match may not have been exciting, but there were many ups and downs in both innings.

Mohammad Rizwan admitted that Pakistan made mistakes in the Asia Cup 2022 final against Sri Lanka on Sunday and lost the trophy.

Rizwan then admitted that they had made mistakes in the game. He said that the tournament was a wonderful performance. But in the final, Pakistan lost momentum in the first innings.

“We made mistakes, but we are also human,”  Rizwan said after the match. We played well throughout the tournament. Today we lost the momentum in the first innings. In T20 cricket, whichever team has better momentum during the break has the advantage.”

Pakistan’s wicketkeeper said that no team will be champion considering the coin toss. He said that Sri Lanka did not consider the coin toss and at the end of the day emerged as champions.

“I think if any team thinks about toss, then they are not a champion team. Sri Lanka were that today, they didn’t think of toss. And then they hurt us for our mistakes. They deserved to be champions,” he added.

Batting first, the Sri Lankan team did not get off to a good start. Sri Lankan opener Kusal Mendis was bowled out by Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah while Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for just 8 runs in Haris Rauf’s bowling.

Sri Lanka was reeling under the pressure of Pakistan’s fast bowlers and the team lost 5 wickets for 58 runs in 8.5 overs. However, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga made a crucial partnership to save them from collapse.

Pakistan dropped two catches, including Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s catch when he was on 46. Rajapaksa continued his excellent form with a 45-ball 71 to help Sri Lanka reach a challenging score of 170 in 20 overs. Sri Lanka sets a target of 171 runs.

In response, Pakistan never looked in a winning situation. Rizwan was criticized for not being quick enough in the chase. In the end, Pakistan were bowled out for 147 runs by the Sri Lankan bowlers.

At the same time, Pakistan captain Babar Azam was dismissed for just 5 runs. Although Mohammad Rizwan batted well, Pakistan’s batsmen failed in front of the Sri Lankan bowlers. Pakistan lost the final match by 23 runs.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosted the Asia Cup in 2022, and there was a strong tendency in favour of teams chasing, making the final toss an important one to win. When Babar Azam made the right decision and chose to field against Sri Lanka, the odds were already stacked in Pakistan’s favour.

When Sri Lanka was reduced to 58/5 in the ninth over, things took a turn for the worst. The Sri Lankan batting lineup was then led by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who turned around their position with an unbeaten 45-ball 71 to help them reach 170.

Following that, Sri Lanka outplayed Pakistan in the field, with Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan claiming a combined seven wickets amid a sluggish batting display. As a result, Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by 23 runs after bowling them out for 147.

Sri Lanka Takes Inspiration From CSK

Prior to the tournament’s championship game, the team batting first had triumphed just three times in 11 games.

In two of those, India and Pakistan defeated Hong Kong, while in the third, Virat Kohli’s century helped India defeat an exhausted Afghanistan team that had just played two days in a row.

Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, recognised before the toss that his team faced challenges since they were given the opportunity to bat, but he still believed they could prevail.

After the match, he said that the team had in mind the final of IPL 2021 when Chennai Super Kings batted first and won.

“In IPL 2021, Chennai won the match batting first and that is what was in my mind, we talked about it,” Shanaka said in the post-match press conference.

Even in that year’s IPL, India’s flagship T20 event, teams batting second did win more games. IPL 2021 was also played in the UAE.

However, CSK won the last match by batting first and defeating Kolkata Knight Riders.

After the game, a few journalists and fans circled Ramiz outside the stadium and asked him about his views on the match. Among them, there was an Indian journalist, Rohit Juglan, who asked him if he had a message for the Pakistani public back home who would be quite disappointed after the loss against Sri Lanka in the final.

The PCB chief, who was not at all in a good mood after Pakistan’s loss, got irritated at the Indian journalist’s question and started countering the journalist for using the word ‘awaam’ (common people). Also, Ramiz snatched the phone of the Indian journalist to stop the recording before handing it back to him and walking away.

Meanwhile, Saqlain Mushtaq said that the Dasun Shanaka-led side deserved to win the championship after the way they performed throughout the tournament.

“If you’re a champion team, you need to be a champion irrespective of whether it’s first innings or second innings,” Saqlain said at the press interaction as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“In the previous game, they asked us to bat first and won. In this game, we batted second and they still won. The way they played in both games, it’s well-deserved.”

When asked about the approach of the opening batsman Mohammad Rizwan, who scored poor 55 runs off 49 balls in the final. Saqlain said that the method adopted by Rizwan is not at all bad and every player has his own style of batting. He elaborated:

“Every team and player has their own style and methods. The way we played, we reached semi-finals of the T20 World Cup last year, we got to the final of an Asia Cup here. Evidence suggests you’re doing something right to get here.

“It’s not compulsory that you do what the rest of the world is doing [in terms of strike rates and showing more intent with the bat]. We’d rather focus on the small things we aren’t doing right instead of looking at what others are doing. His andaaz [method] is not bad.”

Talking about the Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who had a poor run with the bat in the Asia Cup, the Pakistan head coach said that the batter is just unlucky.

“I said it earlier too if someone looks at his batting, you’d just say he’s unlucky, especially the way he’s getting out,” Saqlain said.

“It’s just a patch. If you look at the rankings, he’s top in T20Is [No. 2, behind Rizwan] and in ODIs. It’s just been bad luck. The way he’s training and playing it’s amazing. His work ethic is top-notch. I don’t need to say more. I hope Allah saves him from the buri nazar (evil eye),” he added.

When asked if Pakistan were erring strategically by being rigid about opening with Babar and Rizwan, instead of trying Fakhar Zaman as an opener. He replied:

“You need to show faith, trust and belief. If you keep shuffling, it sends a message that you don’t trust them. After the second match itself, there was chatter about our batting shuffle. I don’t follow social media, but you do hear the murmurs. You need to give time. If you keep shuffling, how will you know? Whatever we did, it’s not good to shuffle a lot. It sends a wrong message.”

Saqlain further showered praise on the star batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who smashed sensational 71 runs off 45 balls, including 6 fours and 3 sixes, to win the Player of the Match award in the final, and the entire Sri Lankan Team.

“The way they played today, we played just nine overs of good cricket. After that they dominated for 31 overs in all aspects,” Saqlain said.

“They have been playing brilliant cricket; credit goes to all the boys. Looks like they are on top of the world. The way they played against India and got momentum against Afghanistan, a lot of praise for all of them.

“I’ll credit the Sri Lankans. We’d broken their backbone in the first nine overs, but the way Rajapaksa played, and the others rallied around him, no praise is enough. I’m sure it should be the best innings of his life. The way he lifted them, hats off.”

Wanindu Hasaranga further said that he absolutely loves bowling in the subcontinent. He elaborated:

In the first few overs, the ball swung, but when I batted, the wicket was really good. I love to bowl in the subcontinent. I look to bowl at the stumps in these conditions and that is why I am successful. I try to bowl tight and bowl dot balls. Our boys did a great job throughout the tournament, especially after our loss against Afghanistan.”

Sri Lanka clinched their sixth Asian Cup title by defeating Pakistan in the summit clash by 23 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In the process, the Islanders took their Asia Cup title tally to 6 – just one behind India. Overall, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have faced off in 4 Asia Cup finals with the former winning in 1986, 2014 and 2022 while the latter emerged victorious in 2000.

Following their win, winning skipper Dasun Shanaka said, “I want to thank the crowd; they have been supporting us massively. Hopefully we made them proud today. In IPL 2021, Chennai won the match batting first and that is what was in my mind. These youngsters know the conditions really well. Hasaranga made a huge impact after losing five wickets. Chamika and DDS batted really well too.

“The last ball six was the turning point. 170 was the point mentally as 160 always feels chasable. As a youngster, we knew Madushanka would deliver, and as a captain we had to back him. It can happen to any team in the world. [On the first game against Afghanistan] It happened for a good reason. We had serious discussions after that game. Each and every individual did well for us and that is how we became champions. The fielding improved a lot in the finals. We had some mistakes in the league stages. We were 100% today, credit to the players and the coaching staff. I want to thank the Sri Lankan cricket board and the selectors as well,” he added.

Sri Lanka made a slow start to innings as Pakistan bowlers dominate

Pakistan National Cricket Team won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. This was the first toss that Sri Lanka had lost in the Super 4 stage of the ongoing edition of the Asia Cup.

The Men In Green made two changes to the playing XI as Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah replaced Usman Qadir and Hasan Ali. On the other hand, the Lankan Lions, who were playing their 11th Asia Cup final, made no changes to the playing XI.

The Dasun Shanaka and Co. were off to a poor start in the match as star opening batsman Kusal Mendis was sent back to the dugout for a golden duck by young pace bowling sensation Naseem Shah in the first over itself.

Haris Rauf came to bowl the fourth over of the match and on the second ball he cleaned up opener Pathum Nissanka for 8. The 28-year-old’s lethal 151kph delivery bamboozled Danushka Gunathilaka for 1 in the 6th over. At the end of the powerplay, Sri Lanka were at 42/3.

Dhananjaya de Silva, who looked very good out in the middle, was cleaned up by part-timer Iftikhar Ahmed for 28 in the 8th over. In the very next over Dasun Shanaka’s poor slog-sweep resulted in him getting castled by Shadab Khan for 2.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne propel Sri Lanka to a challenging total

After that, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga had a remarkable partnership that helped Sri Lanka gain momentum. The duo added 58 runs in 36 balls before Hasaranga was dismissed by Haris Rauf in the 15th over. He scored 36 runs off 21 balls, including 5 fours and 1 six.

In the end, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Chamika Karunaratne had an amazing unbeaten 54 runs partnership in 31 balls that helped Sri Lanka post 170/6 on the board. Rajapaksa smashed sensational 71 runs off 45 balls, including 6 fours and 3 sixes. Karunaratne contributed 14 runs off 14 balls, including 1 six.

Chasing the target, Pakistan were off to a poor start as they lost two wickets inside the first six overs and at the end of the powerplay they were at 37/2. Captain Babar Azam, who had an extremely poor run with the bat in the Asia Cup, scored 5 runs off 6 balls and Fakhar Zaman, who struggled for runs in the marquee tournament, got cleaned up for a golden duck. Both the wickets were picked up by the 28-year-old seamer Pramod Madushan.

Mohammed Rizwan tried to keep Pakistan in the hunt but falls short

Star wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed batted cautiously and had a 71-run partnership in 59 balls before the latter was dismissed by Pramod Madushan for 32 in the 14th over. Mohammad Nawaz also failed to perform and got out after scoring 6 runs in the 16th over.

Wanindu Hasaranga came to bowl next and he produced a magical 17th over by dismissing Mohammad Rizwan (55), Asif Ali (0) and Khushdil Shah (2). In the end, Maheesh Theekshana, Pramod Madushan and Chamika Karunaratne picked up wickets and Pakistan were bundled out for 147.

Sri Lanka clinched their sixth Asian Cup title by defeating Pakistan in the summit clash by 23 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. In the process, Sri Lanka National Cricket Team clinched their Asia Cup title tally to 6 – just one behind India. Overall, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have faced off in 4 Asia Cup finals with the former winning in 1986, 2014 and 2022 while the latter emerged victorious in 2000.

Speaking at the post-match ceremony, MOTM Bhanuka Rajapaksa said, “It was not easy out there. Pakistan were bowling well. When Wanindu came in, we got a plan. We wanted to be positive all through. When Iftikhar was bowling, Wanindu said that he would attack him. But thankfully both of us went har. I had to change my game because Pakistanis were on top. We wanted to spend some time in the crease and that helped in getting 170. When Chris (Silverwood) came out to talk to us after the 10th over, I told him that 140 was a good score. But we stayed till the end and the target was much different. The last ball six and the last over helped us with the momentum and this is a game of momentum.”

During the post-match presentation ceremony, Pakistan National Cricket Team skipper Babar Azam said that they dominated Sri Lanka in the first 8 overs, but the partnership between Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne turned out to be a game changer. He said:

“Congratulations to Sri Lanka for playing outstanding cricket. We dominated them for the first eight overs, but the partnership that Rajapaksa got was amazing. This was a true wicket and it is always nice playing in Dubai.”

Babar Azam further said that they didn’t bat according to their potential and in the bowling department they gave away 15-20 extra runs. Also, he admitted that the fielding of Pakistan was poor. He asserted:

“We didn’t bat according to our potential. We started well, but we gave away 15-20 extra runs and couldn’t finish well. A lot of positives for us to take. In final, the margin for mistakes is lesser. Our fielding wasn’t up to the mark and the batting couldn’t finish it off well. But Rizwan, Naseem and Nawaz were positives. Ups and downs will be there, but it would be nicer if we made lesser mistakes.”

Pakistan vice-captain Shadab Khan was in a world of pain after colliding with his teammate Asif Ali during the last of the Sri Lankan innings in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 final in Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, UAE on September 11, 2022.

Shadab Khan was trying to take the catch of Bhanuka Rajapaksa when he collided with Ali and was lying near the boundary rope for a considerable amount of time in a bit of daze before Pakistan physio and trainer came out to help him.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and chose to bowl first. The Men in Green made two changes as Usman Qadir and Hassan Ali made way for Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah. Naseem Shah opened the bowling for Pakistan in the pressure-filled final and gave a huge blow to Sri Lanka, as Kusal Mendis received a vicious inswinger which he failed to negotiate and lost his stumps.

Haris Rauf then picked three-wicket to reduce Sri Lanka to 58/5 in 9 overs. But then first with Dhanajaya de Silva (28) and then with Wanindu Hasaranga (36 in 21 balls), Bhanuka Rajapaksa took Sri Lanka towards an amazing final total which may prove to be enough for the Islanders.

Rajapaksa remained unbeaten on 71 in 45 balls with 3 sixes and 6 fours to his name as Sri Lanka made 170/6 in 20 overs. Haris Rauf with 3/21 and Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan, and Iftikhar Ahmed took one wicket each as well for Pakistan.

Meanwhile, on the last ball of the 19th over bowled by Mohammad Hasnain, Rajapaksa pulled a ball high in the air towards the midwicket boundary. The ball went into the stratosphere and Asif Ali settled himself under the ball near the boundary.

Unbeknownst to him, Shadab Khan ran in from a deep midwicket position and at the last moment, dived to catch the ball and in the process his head collided with Asif’s shoulder, hurting both the players. In the meantime, the ball bounced off Shadab’s hands and went over the boundary for a six.

Shadab laid on the ground for some time and was treated by the physio and the trainer, who moved him outside the boundary ropes and continued the treatment.
