The West Indies cricket team were sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate against Zimbabwe at the World Cup Qualifiers. The West Indies players have been fined 60 percent of their match fees due to the slow overrate in the match.

The Shai Hope-led team suffered a 35-run loss to Zimbabwe in World Cup qualifiers at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on Saturday, June 24. ICC International Panel of Match Referee Muhammad Javed handed a penalty to the Caribbean team following their defeat in the crucial game.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side falls short of the target.

The West Indies fell three overs short of the target in the allotted time. Windies skipper Shai Hope pled guilty and accepted the financial sanctions, and there was no need for a formal hearing.

Sikandar Raza Impressed With His All-Round Performance vs West Indies

The West Indies won the toss and elected to field first. The visitors dropped star all-rounder Sikandar Raza twice in the match when he was on 1 and 7. Raza made most of them and played a match-defining knock of 68 off 58 deliveries. Zimbabwe managed to post a decent total of 268 runs in 50 overs.

The West Indies were bowled out for 233 runs. Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase impressed with the bat and scored 56 and 44, respectively. Tendai Chatara was the top performer with the ball, picking up three wickets. Sikandar Raza, Richard Ngarava, and Blessing Muzarabani took two wickets each.

The West Indies qualified for the Super Six phase of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier event despite losing to Zimbabwe in their most recent game. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals of the Qualifier, and the winners will progress to the final and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India.
