ICC World Cup Ranking: The much-awaited ICC World Cup 2023 is just a handful of months away. The 13th edition of the quadrennial event is scheduled to be played in October-November. For the very first time, India will be hosting the tournament as the sole host. In the past, India had co-hosted the competition as many as three times – 1987, 1996, and 2011.

ICC World Cup 2023 Teams and Formats:

A total of 10 teams will be taking part in the upcoming edition of the ICC World Cup or the ICC Men’s Cricket World. The format of the competition will be similar to the 2019 edition – a round-robin stage followed by the knockouts.

In the round-robin stage, each team will play against the other nine teams once. A team will receive 2 points for a win while a no-result will see both teams getting one point each. The top four teams will then make it to the semifinals. The first-placed team will lock horns against the fourth-placed team in the semifinal while the second and third-placed teams will be up against each other for a place in the title decider.

ICC World Cup Teams:

Ten teams are participating in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. While India has booked their place in the competition as hosts, the other nine teams will have to do it through qualification events. The main route to the ICC World Cup is the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. The top seven sides in the competition along with hosts India have sealed an automatic qualification for the marquee event.

The remaining two spots will be decided by a qualifier event scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe in June-July.  The five remaining teams on the Super League table, the top three teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and the top two teams from the 2023 World Cup Qualifier Playoff will be taking part in the qualifier.

Hosts India and England, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and South Africa have booked their spots for the ICC World Cup from the Super League. On the other hand, Ireland, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, United Arab Emirates, and the United States will be taking part in the Qualifiers for the remaining two spots.

ICC World Cup Ranking:

The ICC World Cup Ranking or the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League Standings has been finalized following the conclusion of the three-match ODI series between Ireland and Bangladesh. The league got underway in July 2020 and ended in May 2023.

A total of 13 teams featured in the Super League-12 Full Members of the ICC and the Netherlands, who qualified for the event after winning the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship. Each team earned 10 points for a win, five for a tie/no result/abandoned match, and zero for a loss.

Coming to the ICC World Cup Ranking, New Zealand have finished as the top-ranked side with 175 points. Reigning 50-over world champions England and Bangladesh are second and third on the list with 155 points followed by India and Pakistan who have 139 and 130 points respectively.

5. England vs Zimbabwe, 1992

One of the greatest upsets in the history of the ODI World Cups took place in the 1992 edition when tournament favorites England locked horns against Zimbabwe. England were the runners-up of the last edition and had won 5 of their first 7 games (1 game was washed out). Zimbabwe, on the other hand, had lost all of their seven games.

England were widely expected to win the game and their win looked more than likely when they bowled out the African outfit for a paltry total of 134 runs. Ian Botham and Richard Illingworth picked up 3 wickets each to put England in the driver’s seat.

Zimbabwe, however, were determined to bow out of the World Cup with a win and they went on to produce one of the greatest comebacks in the World Cups. Eddo Brandes dismissed Graham Gooch on the very first ball and England kept losing wickets at regular intervals after that. They were eventually bowled out for 125 runs to lose the game by 9 runs.

4. Scotland vs Afghanistan, 2015

Scotland were expected to beat Afghanistan when they played against each other in the 2015 World Cup. While Scotland were playing their third World Cup, Afghanistan were appearing in the competition for the very first time.

Afghanistan, however, put themselves in the driver’s seat by bowling out Scotland for 210 runs. Shapoor Zadran picked up 4 wickets while Dawlat Zadran took 3. They began their chase on a good note too as the openers added 42 runs for the first wicket before Scotland hit back by taking a flurry of wickets. In no time, they reduced Afghanistan to 97 for 7.

With more than 100 runs still needed, the game looked all but over for the tournament debutants. However, their no.4 batsman Samiullah Shenwari came up with a brilliant knock to help his side stage a remarkable comeback. He scored 96 runs before losing his wicket when his team needed 18 runs. Scotland were still in the driver’s seat but Afghanistan’s tailenders managed to guide their team to a historic win.

3. Australia vs England, 2003

Any match between bitter rivals Australia and England hardly disappoints and the game between them in the 2003 World Cup was not an exception either. Batting first, England were well placed at 72 for 1 before suffering an inexplicable collapse that saw them getting reduced to 87 for 5. Alec Stewart (46) and Andrew Flintoff (45) then helped England post a respectable total of 204 for 8.

Andy Bichel was the destructor-in-chief with the ball, taking a career-best 7 for 20 off his 10 overs. Australia were expected to register a comfortable win but England had other ideas. Andy Caddick rocked their top-order with a 4-wicket haul and the reigning champions found themselves reeling at 48 for 4.

Darren Lehmann and Michael Bevan steadied the ship and took the score past the 100-run mark but Australia suffered another collapse and saw them getting reduced to 135 for 8. But Bevan and Bichel shared an unbeaten stand of 73 runs to take Australia home against all the odds.

2. India vs Zimbabwe 1983:

India had their back against the wall after losing two games in a row when they locked horns against Zimbabwe in the must-win clash to keep their campaign alive. However, the top-order batters failed to live up to the expectations. India were reeling at 17 for 5 and were looking destined to suffer a humiliating defeat.

But captain Kapil Dev was not ready to throw in the towel yet. The legendary allrounder came up with one of the greatest ODI knocks of all time to propel India to 266 for 8. He smashed an unbeaten 175 off just 138 balls with the help of 16 fours and 6 sixes. India then bowled out Zimbabwe for 235 before going on to win the World Cup as well.

1. Australia vs Afghanistan 2023:

While Afghanistan had already defeated England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands in the competition, not many were expecting them to beat five-time world champions Australia who were on a five-match winning streak. But Afghanistan did not put a foot wrong for most part of the game and were looking destined to register another historic win before a monumental effort from Glenn Maxwell powered Australia to a famous win.

Batting first, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 291 for 5 in the allotted 50 overs with opener Ibrahim Zadran scoring a sublime century. In reply, Australia made a disastrous start and were reeling at 91 for 7. Their chances of winning the game looked as good as over. However, Maxwell had other ideas.

The hard-hitting batsman struggled with a back injury and cramp and went on to play a historic knock of 201 not out to take his team home in the 47th over. He shared an unbeaten partnership of 202 runs with captain Pat Cummins who scored 12 off 68 balls. He became the first Australian to score an ODI double-century and also the first in the world to do so while chasing.

Zimbabwe great Heath Streak has passed away at the age of 49 after fighting courageously with cancer. Heath Streak’s wife Nadine Streak confirmed the heartbreaking news on Sunday (September 3).

She took to Facebook to write an emotional post about her husband and the cricketing legend. A screenshot of the post from Nadine was later shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Zimbabwean senator David Coltart. Expressing his disappointment over losing his dear friend, Coltart wrote:

“I am deeply saddened to report that my dear friend Heath Streak died early this morning. He fought a courageous fight. Zimbabwe has lost a truly remarkable patriot. My deepest sympathy is extended to Nadine & their entire family. Attached is her announcement just posted on FB.”

Earlier this year in May, Coltart had revealed that Heath Streak was ‘extremely ill’. Later reports stated that the Zimbabwe legend was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon and liver cancer, and was ‘on his deathbed’. A couple of weeks ago, former Zimbabwe cricketer Henry Olonga had mistakenly announced that Heath Streak died of cancer before issuing an apology.

Heath Streak, Zimbabwe’s greatest:

Heath Streak is arguably the greatest player to represent Zimbabwe in international cricket. The former cricketer plied his trade for Zimbabwe from 1993 to 2005 and retired from international cricket at the age of 31. He is still the only cricketer from Zimbabwe to take more than 100 Test and over 200 ODI wickets.

In Tests, he played 65 matches and picked up 216 wickets with an economy of 2.69. In the ODI format, Heath  represented his country in 189 matches and took 239 wickets. A good allrounder, Heath Streak also made a mark with the bat, scoring 1990 runs in Tests and 2934 runs in ODIs.

After bringing down curtains on his illustrious international career, Heath Streak played in County Cricket before taking up coaching roles with several teams. He served as bowling coach of Bangladesh, Kolkata Knight Riders and Somerset. In 2021, Heath Streak was banned from all cricketing activities for eight years for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption policies.

Rubbishing the rumours of his death, Zimbabwe legend Heath Streak has confirmed that he is well and alive. The cricketing world was left stunned after rumours of his death started doing the rounds. Tributes started pouring in from all the quarters as soon as the reports of Heath Streak’s death emerged.

Heath Streak’s former teammate Henry Olonga was the first to announce that his ex-teammate had died of cancer aged 49. He took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday (August 23) to pay tribute to his nation’s ‘greatest allrounder’.

“Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP legend. The greatest all-rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end,” wrote Olonga.

However, it did not take Olonga long to backtrack on his post as he confirmed that Heath Streak is alive. He shared a screenshot of a message sent to him by Heath Streak after the reports of his death.

“I can confirm that rumours of the demise of Heath Streak have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive folks,” wrote Olonga.

Heath Streak reacts to death rumours:

Heath Streak has stated that he is hurt by the rumours of his death and sought an apology. Talking to the media, the Zimbabwe great rubbished the rumours and said that he is ‘very upset’ over the rumour being spread without any verification.

“It is a total rumour and a lie. I’m alive and well. I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified, especially in our day and age of social media,” Heath Streak was quoted as saying by Mid-Day.

“I believe the source should apologise. I am hurt by the news,” he added.

Heath Streak is one of Zimbabwe’s most decorated cricketers. He represented the African country from 1993 to 2005 and retired from international cricket at the age of 31. He is still the only cricketer from his country with more than 100 Test and over 200 ODI wickets.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), on Tuesday (August 15), announced that England will host Zimbabwe for one Test in May 2025. It will be the first Test between the two teams since 2003.

England and Zimbabwe have played six Tests against each other so far. The first meeting between the two teams in the longest format of the game took place in the 1996/97 season when Zimbabwe hosted England for two Tests. The series had ended in a 0-0 draw.

Later in 2000 and 2003, Zimbabwe traveled to England and played two Tests in each series. England won both the series against the African country. During the 2003 series between them, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker James Anderson made his Test debut in the first Test at Lord’s. He had gone on to claim 5-73 in the first innings.

England vs Zimbabwe Test in 2025:

More than two decades after the last Test match between them, England and Zimbabwe will renew their rivalry in red-ball cricket once again. The ECB announced that England will host Zimbabwe for a four-day Test from 28-31 May 2025. The venue for the game is yet to be decided. Both ECB and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) recently held discussions to forge closer relations between the two cricket boards and the Test will be a big step towards it.

“The significance and magnitude of this tour cannot be over-emphasised, and I would like to say a huge thank you to the ECB for committing to the resumption of cricketing relations between our countries that date back to the introduction of the game in Zimbabwe in the 1890s.

“The experience of playing a Test match against a top team like England is massive for the current generation of our players, coming at a time when our game as a whole is on an upward trajectory.

“It is upsetting. I have been a part of Qualifiers before. Sad to be in such a situation. Things have not gone our way going into the Super Six. It’s going to be tough. I will be very disappointed not seeing the West Indies in the World Cup here in India,” said Chris Gayle.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said that his players did not take the responsibility to win the match for the side in their match against Zimbabwe. West Indies Chasing 269 to win lost the game by 35 runs as they were bowled out for 233.

West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl first, They restricted Zimbabwe to a par total of 268. Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl scored the fifties batting in the middle order to take Zimbabwe to that total. For West Indies, Keemo Paul took two wickets while Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein took two each.

West Indies displayed a disappointing batting display. Windies head coach Daren Sammy said that the loss was a disappointing one as the players let themselves down on the field.

“Extremely disappointed. At the toss, we got to do what we wanted to do, which is to bowl first. Look, if we continue to display this type of fielding – we’ve spoken about it for the last few games – and if you keep giving the opposition’s best batters chances, eventually the cricket gods will catch up with you,” Sammy said at his post-match press conference.

We Did Not Deserve To Win: Daren Sammy

He further said that despite getting to do what they wanted to do ending up losing the game was a disappointing effort from the side. Sammy further said he ended up losing the game.

“And it did with us today, but [a target of] 269 on that surface… Again, these are the things we’re trying to change. We’ve seen it happen in the past before and the direction that I want this team to move forward…Today was really poor and it’s about taking responsibility and we didn’t do that today. And hence we didn’t deserve to win at all today” he further said.

West Indies and Sri Lanka were considered as the two teams to make it through. However, Windies’ loss to Zimbabwe has now put their campaign in doubt. The West Indies play their last game against the Netherlands on Monday, June 28.

Shai Hope, the West Indies cricket team’s captain, recently commented on the team’s performance. He underlined the necessity of regrouping and putting in more effort to win games, emphasizing the need for the squad to progress and enhance their game.

Zimbabwe broke into huge celebrations after Raza took the final wicket. The likes of Sean Williams, and Sikandar Raza were seen consoling Akeal Hosein as all the West Indies players were dejected. There was ecstasy in the Zimbabwe camp and agony in the Windies camp.

“To be honest, too much is in my mind right now. Certainly a lot of hurt and disappointment. We let ourselves in the field. We want to play our best cricket, today we didn’t do that. We let the chances slip. But we have to look at the positive as well. If we had to chase around 260, we would have taken that as a batting group. But we let ourselves down and we still have a lot of work to do and the tournament is not over yet. There will be challenges on and off the field, trying to get the guys motivated will be a challenge” said Hope.

“We need to be hard on ourselves. It is best to have a day off and get this loss out of the system, we to come hard come Monday and no excuses. Catches let us down, plain and simple. We’ve been asking to boys to create chances, they did that today but we let ourselves down. And then with the bat. If we had 260 to chase before the game started we would have happily taken that” said Windies skipper Shai Hope after the loss saying that there is no excuse for this loss.

Heath Streak’s family flies from the UK to South Africa:

Great Heath Streak of Zimbabwe has been diagnosed with colon and liver cancer. Following the diagnosis, the former Zimbabwe skipper is severely unwell, and the country is praying for the well-being of one of its best cricketers.

“Heath Streak is on his last legs. Family en route to South Africa from the UK. Seems only a miracle will save him now. Prayers up (sic),” the country’s Sports Minister wrote on Twitter.

The Streak family also issued a statement after the news of his diagnosis was made public. “Heath has cancer and is undergoing treatment under one of the most respected Oncologists in South Africa. He remains in good spirits and will continue to fight this disease in a similar vein to that which his opponents faced during his revered days on the cricket field,” the family said.

“The family hopes that you understand and respect their wish for this to remain a private family matter, and thank you for your prayers and good wishes. There will be no further official statements regarding his health at this time. Any news that becomes public should be regarded as a rumor” the family statement added.

“After much thought, I have decided to retire from all forms of professional cricket with immediate effect. I had hoped my move to Zimbabwe will provide me with a new found happiness for the game and I will always be thanful to Zimbabwe Cricket for providing me with an opportunity to return to international cricket and welcoming me into their team,” said Gary Ballance.

Zimbabwe Cricket has launched a new franchise-based T10 tournament that is aiming to feature cricket stars from across the world. The name of the tournament is Zim Afro T10, which will be played in August this year.

There will be six privately owned teams in the tournament. The team names, schedule, and other official details will be announced in due course. This is the latest T10 tournament to be established by T Ten Global Sports, the same company behind the Abu Dhabi T10 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Lanka T10 in Sri Lanka.

Zimbabwe announced a 15-member full-strength squad for the upcoming three-match One Day International series against the Netherlands, with the first ODI scheduled to be played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare on Tuesday, March 21. Craig Ervine will lead the squad in the series, which is part of the ODI Super League series.

Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, Sean Williams, Tendai Chatara, and Blessing Muzarabani have returned to the national squad after missing the two-Test series against the West Indies in Bulawayo last month. Zimbabwe lost the series 1–0 after drawing the first Test match, which was affected by the rain and suffering a defeat by an innings and four runs in the second match.

Raza and Burl missed the last series due to their franchise commitments. Raza was part of the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), while Burl represented the Sylhet Strikers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and then the Rhinos and Northerns in Zimbabwe.

Williams and Chatara both suffered injuries during the white-ball series against Ireland in January. Williams sustained a fractured finger, while Chatara picked up a thigh-muscle injury. Muzarabani has been sidelined from the squad since last November with a recurrence of an old quad muscle injury.

Zimbabwe cricket head coach Dave Houghton stated that the team wants to win the series to prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifying competition. Houghton hinted that they will plan to try out different combinations in the upcoming series.

“It’s great to have the whole team back and everyone fighting fit. It’s naturally our intention to win the series – however, in doing so, it is also an opportunity to try out different combinations to achieve that goal, with an eye on the upcoming World Cup qualifier tournament,” head coach Dave Houghton said in a Zimbabwe Cricket statement.

A fan has been given a five-year suspension by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) for their involvement in a spot-fixing attempt in August 2022. Fast bowler Luke Jongwe was approached by the suspect, who made the suggestion.

The event was promptly reported by Jongwe to the appropriate authorities, which prompted ZC to look into it. The investigation’s findings that the fan had attempted to rig the score led to the issuance of a five-year suspension.

Zimbabwe Bans Edward Walter Mupangano For Approaching Luke Jongwe For Spot-fixing Proposal

“Edward Walter Mupangano, a 27-year-old cricket fan from Harare who in the past also had playing trials with a local club, received the sanction after he approached Luke Jongwe on 4 August 2022 and sought to introduce him to an Indian bookmaker who allegedly wanted the player to bowl in a pre-arranged manner during an international match in return for a payment amounting to US$7000,” ZC said in a statement.

“The facilitator himself would allegedly receive US$3000 if the planned corrupt activity was successful.”

The board said that Mupangano had admitted guilt of breaking the anti-corruption policy and had been barred for five years from participating in any ZC-sponsored events, activities, or places.

Following this occurrence, Zimbabwe Cricket demanded that the country’s laws “make fixing and any other sporting corruption a criminal offence.”

“It is our view that harsh sanctions, including custodial sentences, will go a long way in helping cricket to curb one of the biggest threats to its credibility,” Zimbabwe Cricket chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani said. “Criminalising match-fixing and spot-fixing will send a strong warning to offenders and would-be offenders that corruption has no place in cricket and those who engage in it should be jailed or put out of the game.”

ZC said it would “intensify its anti-corruption education drive within its structures and continue working with the ICC to ensure that cricket locally and globally is not tainted”.

“The integrity of ZC and the game itself is of paramount importance and, therefore, the need to maintain high levels of honesty and professionalism at all levels of the game cannot be overemphasised,” Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni said.

“Let me take this opportunity to place on record our thanks to Luke Jongwe for reporting the approach – this is what is expected of all participants in cricket if we are to keep our game clean.”

Since making his debut in 2014, Jongwe, 28, has played for Zimbabwe in one Test, 37 ODIs, and 45 T20Is.
