A bizarre ‘Timed Out’ incident happened in the 38th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 between Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team and Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6.

The 36-year-old Sri Lanka National Cricket Team all-rounder Angelo Mathews became the first ever batter in the 146-year history of cricket to be Timed Out in international cricket.

On the second ball of the 25th over of the first innings, Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama as he was caught by veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah.

After the dismissal of the in-form batsman, Angelo Mathews came out to the middle very soon. However, the veteran made a schoolboy error by bringing in a wrong helmet and then he called a member from the dugout to change the helmet.

The umpires weren’t happy with Angelo Mathews wasting time and they were seen having a chat with the veteran before the Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan decided to go for a Timed Out appeal.

After that, the umpires declared Angelo Mathews out, but the all-rounder was reluctant to leave the field. He was also seen having a conversation with Shakib Al Hasan and informing him that his helmet had some issues.

However, the Bangladesh skipper denied the take back the appeal. After a long discussion with Shakib Al Hasan and on-field umpires Erasmus and Illingworth, Angelo Mathews decided to go back to the dugout. The all-rounder looked extremely furious as he walked back and he also threw his helmet near the dugout.

What Is Timed Out Rule In Cricket?

After the dismissal of Angelo Mathews, fans were left wondering what exactly is the Timed Out rule in cricket. According to the Marylebone Cricket Club, Law 40 contains the details of the Timed Out dismissal.

The law states that after a fall of the wicket, the next batter should be in the crease within 3 minutes and the batter should be ready to face the delivery. If the batter doesn’t meet the requirements, they can be declared out by the on-field umpires.

Here’s The Timed Out Dismissal Law:

40.1 Out Timed out

40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

40.1.2 In the event of an extended delay in which no batter comes to the wicket, the umpires shall adopt the procedure of Law 16.3 (Umpires awarding a match). For the purposes of that Law the start of the action shall be taken as the expiry of the 3 minutes referred to above.

40.2 Bowler does not get credit

The bowler does not get credit for the wicket.

There’s a slight change in the law for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as instead of 3 minutes the next batter should be ready to face the bowler within 2 minutes. The ICC World Cup 2023 playing conditions pertaining to “Timed Out” dismissals reads thus:

40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.
